Data centers require a massive amount of water and electricity to stay running. In 2023, they accounted for 4 percent of all electricity consumption in the United States. And Google’s existing “hyperscale” data centers use on average just over a half a million gallons of water a day.
Here in Wisconsin, utility providers are rushing to update their infrastructure in order to keep pace with the data center boom. This comes after two decades of declining demand for both electricity and water statewide, according to a new report from Wisconsin Policy Forum.
