Why Symphonies Matter

In our September Spotlight on Arts & Culture interview program on WPKN 89.5 FM, hear two new leaders of local symphony orchestras discuss the importance of symphony orchestras to the local culture and economy as their new seasons begin. What will these new leaders bring to their orchestras and their communities?

Russell Jones took over the reins last year at the Stamford Orchestra from Barbara Smith-Soroca, after her phenomenal career as CEO and President for 39 years. Mr. Jones is English and has held posts with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Scottish Chamber Orchestras, and the Association of British Orchestras before moving to the United States in 2007. Here, he was vice president of marketing and membership at the League of American Orchestras and in 2012 moved to the New York Philharmonic as director of friends and later as director of major gifts.

Sandra Miklave is a Connecticut native and has been engaged in Norwalk cultural life for decades. She is Chair of the Board of Stepping Stones Museum for Children, where she has been a board member since 2004 (and a volunteer since 1998). She has also volunteered with many other local organizations, including the Stamford Young Artists Philharmonic. She takes over at the Norwalk Symphony from Louis Pietig as it starts its 79th season, re-positioning its strategic plan and extending its collaboration with other community organizations.

Together these new leaders will discuss the changing role of orchestras in the life of their communities and their engagement with their audiences. Do we need the number of orchestras we have in Fairfield County and what can we expect from these institutions in the near future? Hear their answers and their visions for the future of our communities on Monday Sept. 10 at noon on WPKN, 89.5 FM.
