This month features a conversation with the Arts Council of Greater New Haven Director Daniel Fitzmaurice about Create the Vote CT, a nonpartisan public education campaign to raise awareness and support for the arts among voters and candidates running for public office. Daniel is one of the co-founders of this initiative which attempts to bring together CT's many arts organizations to

collectively make their voices heard.

On July 31st the public is invited to attend

Arts, Culture, & the Future of CT’s Economy: Gubernatorial Candidate Forum.

The event goes from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m.at the

Co-Op High School's Mainstage Theater,

177 College Street, New Haven, CT. and is free and open to all.

The Forum will be an opportunity for the creative community to show the candidates that their commitment to the arts, culture, and creativity matters. Each candidate was given a questionnaire with six questions to respond to.

Confirmed attendees are Joseph Ganim, Oz Griebel, Rod Hanscomb, Tim Herbst, Ned Lamont, Marisa Manley, and David Stemerman. The program will be hosted by WTNH-TV anchor Ann Nyberg, who is also a committed champion of the arts in Connecticut.

This is a gubernatorial election year and thus an excellent moment to discuss the strengths and challenges the state faces and to collectively form a vision for our community. While candidates spend much time talking about jobs, the economy, and education, they rarely talk about arts and culture as part of their campaign. Seeing the need to make arts and creativity part of the discussion, Connecticut Arts Alliance (CAA) and the Connecticut Alliance for Arts Education (CAAE) have launched Create the Vote CT. and instigated Arts, Culture, & the Future of CT’s Economy: Gubernatorial Candidate Forum to get the public involved.

Over 90 arts and culture organizations - including WPKN!- have signed up to be co-sponsors of this inspired event. Daniel knows all too well the challenges that face so many arts organizations throughout the state, as budgets get slashed, and yet it bears repeating that arts and culture are what bring so much revenue and other collective goods to our towns and cities. Join us as we discuss this exciting and timely project and the various candidates, questions and challenges that lie ahead in activating and informing the public before the election.

During the summer I like to travel and this year is no exception. Being away from the station offers the chance to look back at past Live Culture episodes and to chose one for re-airing. This one seemed a natural fit: it is full of history, adventures, and stories of making art on the road, making it a great choice for summer listening. Lost Again is a re-broadcast of a show from January 2018 with British artist Abigail Reynolds about her BWW Art Journey- a prize that took her along the Silk Road on a motorcycle hauling a Bolex camera to document the sites of lost libraries. Her epic journey has resulted in a book, a film and an art exhibition. Abigail was live in the WPKN studios with me, during her recent US visit to libraries in New York, and was gracious enough to journey the extra miles to Bridgeport!

Her book, now published by Hatje Cantz, and the film: Lost Libraries are a part of the current exhibition Wish You Were Here: Journals, Journies and Expeditions, a group show up at the Gallery Upstairs at the Institute Library in New Haven until August 31st. more information on that is at Institutelibrary.org.

Son of Afrobeat pioneer and political activist Fela Kuti, Femi inherited his father's zeal for both music and activism.

Femi Kuti protests war and promotes worldwide peace with his 10th LP memorial to his father, musician Fela Kuti.

Kuti was signed to Motown Records in 1994 and his music blends Afrobeat with more current soul, R&B and jazz. He's worked with rappers Mos Def and Common and continues to explore his music and collaborations.

While the music matters, the man himself remains just as politically motivated as his father. Kuti's nightclub in Lagos, the New Afrika Shrine, had become a Mecca for West African music and creative expression, until it was closed by the authorities earlier in the summer.

Kuti recently told a reporter for All Africa Global Media that the Shrine was a place of worship where people can honor "great black people, who fought for the emancipation of Africa through music."

Freeing the "Shrine" from being under lock and key is just one of his crusading missions, as with his band, The Positive Force, Kuti remains outspoken about Nigeria, corruption and the positive changes that Africa can achieve.

In a statement, Kuti said he hopes the project “inspires us all to understand we are all one on the same planet and it’s our duty to defend peace, love and justice and keep our planet healthy.” He also discussed how The Shrine has developed into a local cultural hub. “When we built it, there was nothing around The Shrine,” he said. “Over the years, a neighborhood of homes and businesses sprang up. The Shrine has become one of the most famous places in the country. We keep the price low, so everybody can afford the show.”

The LGBTQ Community Show on WPKN welcomed Victor Trevino, the Artistic Director of the the New England ballet Compaby (based in Bridgeport, CT).

There was also a review of the Bridgeport Pride Celebration, The SameSex Exhibit and the variety show to benefit City Lights Gallery and nonprofit community station WPKN at the Bijou Theatre.

The majority of weather people understand that climate change is real and that the science of climate change needs to be communicated to the public. To my mind, there seems to be a dearth of reporting on our climate crisis on the drive time news and Climate Central is one organization out to change that. My guest Sean Sublette is an award-winning meteorologist working at Climate Central on their Climate Matters program, bringing 19 years of experience as a broadcast meteorologist. Climate Central is an independent organization of leading scientists and journalists researching and reporting the facts about our changing climate and its impact on the public.

Why do we care so much about our homes? The production housing industry has carpet bombed the suburbs for 2 generations, media has a full-on DIY/Tiny House/McMansion Hell/HOUZZ/Home Adviser obsession – Lowes & Home Depot are virtually in every part of American life. We care about our homes. A lot.

But what about those homes we no longer have? Personally, it is easy to see those places through the fuzzy lens of youth, but culturally, America’s first buildings were homes, and very few of that original stock remains, and the venerated Historic Home has often outlived its building family. Where are those long gone homes in our memory?

Addressing these thoughts is diverse and engaged group of design professionals. With me in studio is architect Susan Ingham, visiting from Seattle. She founded KASA Architecture in 2004. Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, Susan also spent a short time in Japan as an exchange student. She continued her studies in California, receiving both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture from the University of California at Berkeley. While at Berkeley, Susan studied and worked intensively with noted professor, architect, and author Christopher Alexander and his colleagues (author of A Pattern Language and other books).

Jason Bischoff-Wurstle is the Director of Photo Archives of the New Haven Museum, but he is also a lover of the history of home, and, along with Bob, he is also a Board Member of the NHPT. Jason has created many of the New Haven Museum’s most interesting exhibits, connecting the past with the people of today, and as an old home occupant and new father, his insights will be invaluable.

Bob Grzywacz is an architect, but more, he is an old house owner and a fully engaged architectural historian – on the Board of The New Haven Preservation Trust (NHPT). Bob obtained his Bachelor of Science from Lehigh University and his Masters of Architecture from Yale University. He has been working in the field of architecture for 44 years. Bob is a Licensed Architect in Connecticut and New York and is a LEED Accredited Professional.
