In 2009 an ambitious tour called CALIFORNIA '66 was making a few select tour stops around the USA. On the original tour was The band LOVE (with Johnnie Echols and Baby Lemonade) as well as Sky Saxon from The Seeds and The Electric Prunes. Unfortunately, Sky Saxon feel ill and passed away on 6/25/09. In an effort to save the event, at least for a CT appearance- planned by community nonprofit WPKN 89.5-FM Bridgeport- The Blues Magoos were brought onto the bill. WPKN programmers Steve di Costanzo, and Eric Cocks conducted one of the last radio interviews with Sky before he passed and this is our tribute to him with our full interview included as well. coming up for a vote, that will assist working farms with financing, easements and other financial mechanisms to allow farmers to own their own their own farms and protect the last remaining farmland from suburban sprawl. My guest is Tianna Kennedy who co/owns and operates Star Route Farm in Charlotteville, NY with Walter Riesen.

She also runs the 607 csa - a multi-farm, full-diet CSA.  She also started the Catskills Chapter of National Young Farmers Coalition and sits on the board of the Center for Agricultural Development and Entrepreneurship in Oneonta, NY.

Jason Corburn, professor at University of California Berkeley, director of the Center for Global Healthy Cities

Jason Corburn is a professor in two normally disparate fields -- the Department of City and Regional Planning and the School of Public Health at UC Berkeley. There, he directs the Institute of Urban and Regional Development and the Center for Global Healthy Cities. As his bio states, “His research focuses on the links between environmental health and social justice in cities, notions of expertise in science-based policy making, and the role of local knowledge in addressing environmental and public health problems. Corburn’s research and practice works to build partnerships between urban residents, professional scientists and decision-makers in order to collaboratively generate policy and planning solutions that improve the qualities of cities and the well-being of residents, particularly the poor and people of color."

This month on Live Culture my guest is Toto Kisaku whose theatre production REQUIEM FOR AN ELECTRIC CHAIR is being featured in this year's International Festival of Arts & Ideas. The production runs June 22-23 at the Iseman Theatre at 1156 Chapel Street in New Haven.

A set designer, actor, and producer, Toto Kisaku was imprisoned for creating art that questioned the practice of child exploitation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. he was moments away from being killed by his government when his executioner showed him an unexpected moment of mercy. He has since found political asylum in the United States, where he has created a theatre production about this pivotal moment in his existence. This June the public is invited to experience his remarkable story at the world premiere of his new play.

Kisaku has organized theatre in communities across Congo and performed internationally before coming to the U.S. in December 2015. Toto created K-Mu Théâtre in 2003, a theatre company popularizing the performing arts in urban areas of Kinshasa. He is the winner of the 2010 “Freedom to Create Award” in Cairo, Egypt. In 2003 he was selected to represent Congo in the 20th edition of the Limoges Festival and to perform in two pieces by Bernard M. Koltes. Kisaku was also in the French version of “Topdog / Underdog” by Suzan L. Parks at the Forum de Blanc Mesnil, the Théâtre Louis Jouvet and the Théâtre de l’Athénée in Paris. Kisaku has also participated in the Avignon, Limoges, Paris Quartier d’Eté, Taz à Oostende, ICAF, Pilotobes, A/D Werf, Right About Now,Toseka, Mantsina, and Connexion Kin festivals.

REQUIEM FOR AN ELECTRIC CHAIR is co-directed by Hanifa Nayo Washington and Will MacAdams. The creative team includes Susan McCaslin, Yaira Matyakubova, Sara Zunda, Jamie Burnett, David Sepulveda, and Robert Barsky.

WPKN’s GM Steve di Costanzo hosts his monthly show: Topics include the upcoming Summer-On-Air Fund Drive starting this Sunday and our Summer Appeal Letter; we welcome new WPKN Volunteer Director Joseph Celli who will talk about our new ‘volunteerism’ focus; We will talk with Sherry Jagerson from the nonprofit Westbridge Coalition, that helps those in need with house improvements. On Thursday June 21 it is Make Music Day- an international day of celebrating LIVE music. We will talk with Suzanne Katchmar from Citylights Gallery who is helping to produce the Bridgeport event. Gary Peterson the director of the Bijou Theatre (site of a LIVE broadcast by WPKN) will join us as well. Other guests include: Rick Reyes a local artist/musician who will be helping to emcee the Bijou event and musician Uma Lou will play in the studio. We will also talk about Bridgeport’s Savorcity.
