Episode: In-studio appearance and performance by Shula Weinstein and Ben Ross, hosted by Valerie Richardson on her Radio Something program on WPKN.
During an engaging, almost hour-long session, musicians Shula Weinstein and Ben Ross performed some live music, and we also played tracks from Shula’s 2015 album “Small and Taller Tales.” This was in advance of an upcoming March 15, 2017, concert by the duo at Best Video in Hamden.
Shula is the copyright holder of her music and has granted permission for us to include all of the music in this segment in the podcast from this segment, and the Odetta song performed by Ben is in the public domain. The podcast includes a final song by Shula, "Blue Said to Yellow," that closed my show, after a second interview about kinetic light artist Thomas Wilfred. This "color discussion" seemed a fitting finale to the entire show.
After the interview I realized I hadn't asked Shula why her music might be described as "Avant-Americana," as it is classified by at least one on-line music source. You might be able to figure it out by listening.
