Spotlight On Arts & Culture | August 8, 2022 | The Levitt Pavilion + Other Great Free Concert Venues This Summer
Hosted by David Green of The Cultural Alliance Of Fairfield County.
For our August show we turned our attention to some of the great free concert series in our region. Our main focus was on The Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts in Westport. For almost 50 years, this community-based, magical performance space has welcomed performing artists from all genres and from the local to the internationally known. With a few fundraising concerts, it otherwise offers mostly free concerts. We interview Freda and Carleigh Welsh, the driving forces behind The Pavilion and its commitment to creating a strong community through music and the other performing arts. We also hear from Bennie Wallace, renowned saxophonist with BackCountry Jazz, who created the Greenwich Jazz Festival, and from Paul Frucht, Artistic Director of the Charles Ives Music Festival.

  • The Plight Of Native American Peoples In Their Own Homeland
The Native Americans are the First People of the United States, yet they are forced to live on reservations on their own land. The Indigenous People seem to be the unseen, and uncared for citizens on their own land. Politicians forget Native People, and the wider society do not remember the Indigenous people are still here. There is one person who do not forget his own people, and he is Tiokasin Ghosthorse. A member of the Cheyenne River Lakota Nation of South Dakota, Tiokasin is a multi-talented and multi-faceted human being who cares about his people and their many challenges.
Please listen this conversation as Tiokasin Ghosthorse fields questions from host of the show, Garnett Ankle.

  • Connecticut Witch Exoneration -- Interview with Beth Caruso, Sarah Jack, and Laura Secord
Valerie Richardson speaks with Beth Caruso, Sarah Jack, and Laura Secord who are working to get exoneration for the women and men who were wrongly accused (and sometimes executed) for being witches in seventeenth-century Connecticut.
Most people think of Salem, Massachusetts, as the center of witch hysteria in the early colonial period. However, several dozen individuals in Connecticut were charged as witches. The first known case was Alse Young, who was hung in 1647 in Windsor, Connecticut. Author Beth Caruso tells the story of “Alice Young” in her novel One of Windsor: The Untold Story of America’s First Witch Hanging. Many descendants of these wrongly accused witches have joined the cause including Sarah Jack, a descendant of the Binghams, a mother and daughter who were accused of witchcraft in Connecticut in the 1690s. She is also one of the leaders of the CT Witch Trial Exoneration Project. Poet Laura Secord is related to both Lydia Gilbert and Katherine Harrison who were also accused of witchcraft in Connecticut.
