  • News Roundtable: Net Zero Luxury, Benefits of Privatisation & Boris Johnson vs. The Law

In this week's 'News Roundtable' episode, host Chris Wright joins Labour Councillor Frances Leach, Former London MEP, Lance Forman, and Former Chief Crown Prosecutor for North West England, Nazir Afzal.

First, the panel discusses Nigel Farage's new initiative, 'Vote Power Not Poverty,' which aims to galvanise the public into pushing back against a net zero agenda and question if it is a luxury or a necessity. They question why net zero seems so low on the agenda of the leadership candidates, debate whether climate change is a man-made problem that can be solved by 2050, and argue the importance of investing more heavily into green energy.

The conversation moves on to the privatisation of the water companies - asking the question of whether Thatcher's policy of privatisation was wrong. They delve into whether the privatisation of different industries has benefited the people of the UK or whether they would be better off in public hands.

Together, the panel discusses Liz Truss' economic programme. Is Liz Truss so popular with the Conservative Party members because she wants to shake things up? They look at the select committee enquiry into Partygate, debating whether the investigation should continue after Boris Johnson leaves Number 10.

  • Deep Dive: Brexit: 6 Years On

In this week's Brexit ‘Deep Dive’ special, Chris is joined by economist Julian Jessop; political commentator Marina Purkiss; and political commentator Lee Harris to debate the impact leaving the EU has had, on the six-year anniversary of the referendum.

The conversation begins with guests discussing the upsides that we have achieved and how Brexit is making our everyday lives better. Beginning with the example of the vaccination programme, and debating how the UK was able to move faster than other European countries, thanks to being independent of the EU.

Guests delve into the state of the post-Brexit UK economy, and the forecasts for 2023, debating whether there is evidence that Brexit is responsible for pushing up the rate of inflation. They chew over the problems the country has faced since the vote to leave, and question the correlation between this and the economy.

They also discuss current labour shortages, travel chaos, trade deals, and supply chain issues, questioning whether this is a result of leaving the EU or in fact, a current global problem, and how much COVID-19 has played a role in these problems.

Finally, they reflect on the overall position the country is in 6 years after the referendum, and look into the future at what further opportunities or consequences Brexit presents.

  • Deep Dive: Afghanistan 10 months after the 2021 Taliban Offensive

In this week's ‘Deep Dive’ episode, Chris is joined by Chris Kinder, chairman of Afghanaid, and Kitty Chevallier, programme development officer of Afghanaid.

The conversation begins with guests discussing what has changed in Afghanistan since the 2021 Taliban offensive- some of the positive changes include an increase in security and a decrease in corruption. They chew over how the sanctions put in place by the Western world have caused the economy to shrink and show no sign of abating. Kitty shares her experience as a Western woman in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, and expresses that she feels safer in the capital than she did before the Taliban takeover due to the increase in security.

Guests debate if the Western world should start to recognise the Taliban as a government and stop their sanctions. They argue that there should be a level of engagement between the Taliban and the West to resume development aid but there are still changes to be made before the Taliban can have full recognition.

Finally, they discuss what the West can do to help support people in Afghanistan over the long term.

If you would like to get involved in Afghanaid's upcoming campaign, you can find out more on their website: www.afghanaid.org.uk/Event/by-her-side-exhibition. The launch event is free to attend and will be a celebration of the stories and strengths of the Afghan women they work with, including a series of portraits, taken by photographers Lynzy Billing and Kobra Akbari.

In this week’s News Roundtable episode, Chris Wright joins Isabel Oakeshott, political journalist and commentator, Richard Taylor, political commentator and broadcaster, and Marina Purkiss, political commentator.

The episode begins with the panellists discussing the results of Boris Johnson’s  no-confidence vote, and sharing their opinions on whether Boris has lost his credibility and trust with the Conservative party. They question if Boris is putting the party in a negative light since he and Bob Seely were met with boos from the crowd at the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

The conversation then moves on to debate over Jacob Rees-Mogg’s comments of the no-confidence vote being a “remainer plot” to remove Boris as prime minister and lose Brexit. They chew over the success of Boris Johnson’s Brexit policies and whether he has actually delivered what the pro-Brexit voters wanted. They elaborate on what he can do to appeal to all who hold different views of the Conservative party.

Together, Chris and the panellists share their predictions for the upcoming by-elections and the Liaison Committee meeting. They question if the Committee finds that Boris has misled the parliament and whether it will mean the end of his premiership.
