Over the weekend, the Chicago Cubs have landed veteran right-handed reliever Phil Maton on a reported two-year deal (with a club option for a third year), according to multiple sources.
Maton is coming off a breakout 2025 season, posting a 2.79 ERA over 63 games split between the Cardinals and Rangers. He’s known for a four-pitch mix — cutter, curve, sweeper, and sinker — and has elite swing-and-miss stuff, despite not blowing hitters away with sheer velocity.
Reports suggest the Cubs aren’t done. They’re expected to add more impact relievers, especially another experienced arm to round out the late-inning group.
