Maurice Hastings spent 38 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Convicted in 1983, Hastings’ repeated requests for DNA testing were denied until 2021, when new evidence exonerated him and pointed to another man. His conviction was vacated in 2022, and in 2023 a judge declared him “factually innocent.” Now 72, Hastings has been awarded a record $25 million settlement in California.
