A’s 9, Tigers 3 – Chapman's 2 HRs help A's top Tigers 9-3 for 3rd straight win

Matt Chapman hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the third inning and homered again in the ninth, helping the Oakland Athletics beat the Detroit Tigers 9-3.  Oakland has won three straight after losing six in a row. The Tigers have lost straight, scoring a total of eight runs in those setbacks. Deolis Guerra pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings after Cole Irvin started and lasted just 4 2-3 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks. Tarik Skubal was roughed up, giving up six runs on seven hits and three walks over five innings.

White Sox 4, Pirates 2 – Grandal, Abreu power White Sox to 4-2 win over Pirates

Yasmani Grandal and Jose Abreu homered, and five relievers combined for 4 2/3 innings of two-hit ball as the Chicago White Sox beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 on Tuesday night. The Sox hold a 10-game lead in the AL Central and won for the fourth time in five games. The Pirates lost for the fourth time in six games. Michael Kopech (4-2) picked up the win. Bryse Wilson (2-6) took the loss.

Cubs 3, Twins 1 – Schwindel, Happ homer; Cubs hold on to beat Twins 3-1

Frank Schwindel homered for the second straight game, Ian Happ added a towering homer into the third deck, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Minnesota Twins 3-1. Manuel Rodríguez (3-2) earned the win for Chicago with two scoreless innings of relief. Rowan Wick earned his first save of the season. Cubs second baseman Matt Duffy ended a threat for Minnesota in the eighth when he tracked down Max Kepler’s pop-up into medium right field, spun and threw Luis Arraez out at the plate trying to score from third. John Gant (4-9) pitched five innings and allowed two runs for Minnesota.

NFL – Pats cut Newton, clearing way for Jones to start

The New England Patriots have shown Cam Newton the door after just one season with the team. The Pats have released the 2015 NFL most valuable player, paving the way for rookie Mac Jones to open the season as the starting quarterback. Veteran players say Jones has impressed them in training camp with his work ethic. Jones won a national title last year at Alabama. The Patriots are trying to rebound from a disjointed 2020 season. Newton finished 7-8 as the starter and the Patriots went 7-9 overall after Tom Brady’s departure.

NFL – AP Exclusive: Bills propose 60,000-seat stadium by 2027

A person with direct knowledge of the details tells The Associated Press the the Buffalo Bills' proposed new stadium would include about 60,000 seats and be built by 2027.  The $1.4 billion venue would not include a roof but a majority of the seats would be protected from the elements. The Bills are in discusions with county and state officials about the new stadium. At issue is how quickly a deal can be approved, and how the construction costs would be split between the team and taxpayers. The team's current stadium was built in 1973.

NFL – Payton: Saints planning up to a month away from New Orleans

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton says the team is investigating the possibility of remaining in the Dallas area for up to a month and opening its regular season against Green Bay in the Cowboys’ home stadium. The Superdome appears to have been spared significant damage from Hurricane Ida. But there are logistical challenges with staffing an NFL game at the dome in the near future because of the widespread damage in the New Orleans area....

Twins 3, Tigers 2 – Donaldson, Ober lead Twins past slumping Tigers, 3-2

Bailey Ober pitched six solid innings and Josh Donaldson’s two-run homer helped the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 3-2. The game was a makeup from a July 16 rainout and was played in front of a minuscule crowd. The Twins have won three of four. Detroit has lost four of five, scoring only nine runs. Ober held the slumping Tigers' offense to two runs on five hits in six innings. He struck out five without walking a batter. Alex Colome pitched the ninth for his 10th save. Detroit starter Casey Mize gave up three runs on five hits including Donaldson’s homer, his 21st of the season.

NFL – Lions backup QB Boyle needs surgery on broken right thumb

Detroit Lions backup quarterback Tim Boyle broke his right thumb in the team’s preseason finale and needs surgery. Lions coach Dan Campbell made the announcement Monday, adding the team is hopeful it was not a season-ending injury. Boyle was hurt Friday night in a loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Detroit acquired starting quarterback Jared Goff, a pair of first-round picks and a third-rounder from the Los Angeles Rams in a trade for Matthew Stafford. Third-year pro David Blough becomes Detroit’s No. 2 quarterback, heading into a Week 1 matchup at home against the San Francisco 49ers.

NFL – Dalton embraces chance with Bears, knowing Fields behind him

Andy Dalton is embracing his opportunity with the Chicago Bears. The Bears are sticking with their plan to open the season with him as their starting quarterback. They expect the three-time Pro Bowler to be the one staring down Aaron Donald when Chicago visits the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 12, with prized rookie Justin Fields in a backup role. Dalton says he's “focused on me" and how he can help the team. The Bears have said since they signed Dalton to a one-year deal that he is their No. 1 quarterback. It didn’t change after they traded up nine spots with the New York Giants to draft Fields with the No. 11 overall pick.

NFL – Saints working 500 miles from home after displaced by Ida

The New Orleans Saints are at the home of another NFL team after being displaced by Hurricane Ida. Saints players and staff, along with about 120 family members, relocated to North Texas in advance of the storm that made landfall south of New Orleans on Sunday as a powerful Category 4 hurricane with winds of 150 mph and left that entire area without power. Coach Sean Payton says the Saints will practice through Wednesday at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. That is before a previously planned break before the start of the regular season.

NFL – Fully vaccinated NFL players will get COVID-19 tests weekly

Fully vaccinated players will be required to get tested for COVID-19 weekly instead of every 14 days as part of the revised protocols for the regular season agreed upon by the NFL and NFLPA. The weekly testing applies also for fully vaccinated Tier 1 and 2 staff. There’s an option for a second test for those who want it, according to a memo sent to clubs and obtained by The Associated Press on Monday. Fully vaccinated individuals do not need to wait for results prior to entering a team’s facility. Each club must conduct its testing over a three-day period. Unvaccinated players will continue to be tested daily.

Michigan 5, Ohio 2 – Lake Superior: Michigan beats Ohio for Little League title

Jackson Surma drove in four runs and Ethan Van Belle struck out eight as Michigan beat Ohio 5-2 in the championship game of the Little League World Series. The team from Taylor North Little League delivered the first LLWS title for the state of Michigan since 1959. Both teams are from the Great Lakes, marking the only time clubs from the same region played in the championship. That was because international teams didn’t compete in the LLWS for the first time since 1975, due to travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Blue Jays 2, Tigers 1 – 2 Jays homers enough for Berríos in 2-1 win over Tigers

José Berríos pitched seven strong innings and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Tigers 2-1, taking two of three in a low-scoring series with Detroit. Bo Bichette and Kevin Smith homered for Toronto, which won 3-2 on Saturday and lost 2-1 on Friday. Berríos allowed one unearned run on six hits in seven innings. He struck out 11 without walking a batter. Tim Mayza got the final four outs for his first career save. Detroit's Matt Boyd allowed two runs in four innings in his first start since June 14.

White Sox 13, Cubs 1 – Luis Robert homers twice as White Sox pound Cubs 13-1

Luis Robert homered twice, Dylan Cease tied a career high with 11 strikeouts and the Chicago White Sox pounded the Chicago Cubs 13-1. Eloy Jiménez, Yasmani Grandal and Brian Goodwin also connected for the White Sox, who went 5-1 against the Cubs this year. Robert, Jiménez and Goodwin each drove in three runs. White Sox slugger José Abreu hit a two-run double in a seven-run fifth to get to 101 RBIs with 29 games left. The reigning AL MVP drove in a career-high 123 runs in 2019. Frank Schwindel homered for the Cubs in the fourth.

MLB – Boo who? Báez, Mets flip thumbs down on fans; team prez mad

Javier Báez and his New York Mets teammates turned the boos at Citi Field to cheers this weekend — and turned their thumbs upside down at frustrated fans. Báez launched a 444-foot home run Sunday in a 9-4 win over the Washington Nationals, then flashed a double thumbs-down gesture toward the crowd on his way back to the dugout. Later, he said Mets players have been making the hand signal after big hits in response to fans who have jeered the club during a rough August. Mets President Sandy Alderson swiftly condemned those remarks and signs, saying they are “totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated.” Alderson said he will meet with Mets players and staff to directly deliver that message.

Sky 107, Storm 75 – Parker scores 25 points, Sky hit 15 3s to rout Storm

Candace Parker scored a season-high 25 points and the Chicago Sky beat the Seattle Storm 107-75 on Sunday to complete a two-game sweep. Chicago tied its franchise record with 15 3-pointers and set the club mark for margin of victory at 32. The Sky have won three in a row, also beating Seattle 73-69 on Thursday night. Seattle has lost three in a row and is 2-5 since returning for the Olympic break. Parker scored 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting as Chicago erupted for 63 first-half points to take a 22-point lead. The two-time WNBA MVP, in her first season with the Sky after 13 seasons with the Los Angeles Sparks, also had nine rebounds and two blocks.

Paul Goldschmidt homered twice and scored the game-ending run on Lars Nootbaar’s single in the 10th inning as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Detroit Tigers 3-2. Goldschmidt was intentionally walked to open the 10th and executed a one-out double steal with automatic runner Tommy Edman. Nolan Arenado was intentionally walked. After a fielder’s choice for the second out, Nootbaar lined a single to right field off Michael Fulmer and St. Louis improved to 11-5 in extra innings. Harold Castro tied it for Detroit in the ninth with a soft single to center off Cardinals closer Alex Reyes.

Blue Jays 3, White Sox 1 – Ray fans 14, Kirk gets winning hit, Jays beat White Sox 3-1

Alejandro Kirk broke a tie with an RBI single in the eighth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox 3-1 Wednesday night. After Blue Jays starter Robbie Ray matched his career high by striking out 14 over seven innings, Tim Mayza worked a perfect eighth for the victory and Jordan Romano finished for his 13th save in 14 chances. Ray is the first left-hander in Blue Jays history to strike out 14 in a game. AL Central-leading Chicago lost for the fourth time in five games.

Cubs 5, Rockies 2 – Rockies 13, Cubs 10 – McMahon goes deep in 10th, Rox split long twinbill with Cubs

Ryan McMahon lofted a two-run homer in the 10th inning, Brendan Rodgers followed with a two-run double that gave him five RBIs for the game, and the Colorado Rockies rallied to beat the Chicago Cubs 13-10 and split a doubleheader. The Cubs won the opener 5-2 in a tidy 2 hours, 9 minutes, thanks to Patrick Wisdom’s tiebreaking three-run homer in the fifth inning. The nightcap lasted exactly twice as long — 4:18 — as the teams combined to play 17 innings. McMahon hit a high drive off Jake Jewell that landed with a thud in the basket in left for his 19th homer.

MLB – 2022 Season will be Molina’s last

Yadier Molina says he will end his major league playing career when his current contract expires after next season. Molina announced the decision a day after he accepted a one-year, $10 million contract extension for the 2022 season. The 10-time All Star and nine-time Gold Glove winner has spent his entire career in the Cardinals organization since the team drafted him in the fourth round of the 2000 MLB draft. Molina this season joined Yogi Berra and Johnny Bench as the only catchers in major league history to record 2,000 hits and play in 2,000 games with one team.

MLB/LLWS – LLWS ties to Major League Baseball easy to find at tourney

Players at the Little League World Series this year may not be playing live in front of crowds of thousands, but they have some major league fans. Ties between MLB and the Little League tournament go back decades and this year is no exception when it comes to major leaguers offering their support. Former Little League star and free agent third baseman Todd Frazier was in the stands this week, cheering for his nephew and the same New Jersey team that Frazier led to the tournament title in 1998. Other MLB players have tweeted support and visited or Zoomed with Little Leaguers.

NFL – Only vaccinated personnel in locker rooms on NFL game days

The NFL has mandated that only fully vaccinated personnel — with a maximum of 50 people — will have access to locker rooms while players are present on game days.

Tigers 4, Cardinals 3 – Cabrera hits No. 501 in Tigers' 4-3 win over Cardinals

Miguel Cabrera and Robbie Grossman hit back-to-back home runs to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 4-3 interleague victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Two days after hitting his 500th homer, Cabrera connected on No. 501. He crushed a 79-mph slider by starter Jack Flaherty into Big Mac Land, which is name of the upper left field deck, in the third inning. At 423 feet, it was his second longest home run this season. The Cardinals immediately removed starter Jack Flaherty (9-2) with what the team said was right shoulder tightness. Casey Mize (7-6) pitched five scoreless innings. He checked the Cardinals on three hits.

White Sox 5, Blue Jays 2 – Abreu hits 3-run HR, Cease fans 7, White Sox beat Jays 5-2

Dylan Cease pitched seven effective innings, José Abreu hit a three-run homer and the Chicago White Sox stopped a three-game slide by topping the Toronto Blue Jays 5-2. Cease retired his first 11 batters, fanning six, before Vladimir Guerrero Jr. lined a single to right in the fourth. Cease allowed one run and four hits, matching his season high in innings. Corey Dickerson spoiled Cease’s shutout bid with a one-out homer in the seventh.

Rockies at Cubs, PPD – Rockies-Cubs game postponed; doubleheader set for Wednesday

Tuesday night’s game between the Colorado Rockies and Chicago Cubs was postponed because of thunderstorms and rescheduled as part of a doubleheader Wednesday. Storms rolled into Wrigley Field about 90 minutes before the scheduled first pitch. The rain was torrential at times, and the area was placed under a severe thunderstorm watch and a flash flood warning. Zach Davies was penciled in to start for Chicago in the first game of the twinbill against Germán Márquez. Game 2 will feature the Cubs’ Justin Steele and Colorado’s Austin Gomber.

NFL – Bears to start Fields in preseason finale, Dalton in Week 1

The Chicago Bears will start rookie quarterback Justin Fields in the preseason finale Saturday at Tennessee against the Titans. Although Fields is starting that game, he still is regarded as the Bears’ backup to veteran Andy Dalton for the regular-season opener against the Los Angeles Rams. Bears coach Matt Nagy says Fields' next playing time would be determined largely by how Dalton performs in the regular season. Fields was drafted 11th overall after the Bears traded up in the first round to take the Ohio State star. In the preseason he has rushed for 79 yards while passing for 222 yards on 23 of 39 throws with one touchdown.

NFL – Jaguars RB Etienne out for season with left foot injury

Travis Etienne’s rookie season is over before it begins. The Jacksonville Jaguars’ rookie running back suffered a left foot injury during Monday’s preseason loss at New Orleans. The first-round draft pick from Clemson is expected to have surgery as soon as possible. Losing Etienne is a significant setback for the Jaguars, who planned to use him to create mismatches in the slot and as a third-down back. Jacksonville selected Etienne with the 25th overall pick in April’s draft and paired him with fellow Clemson star Trevor Lawrence.

NCAAFB – Big Ten teams forfeit if unable to play because of COVID-19

The Big Ten is the latest Power Five conference to announce that a team must forfeit if it doesn’t have enough players available for a league game because of COVID-19. The Big Ten said the team that forfeits will be assessed a loss in the conference standings and its opponent will be credited with a win. If both teams are unable to compete on the date of as scheduled conference game because of COVID-19, and the game can’t be rescheduled, it will be considered a no contest. The Power Five conferences appear headed toward having similar forfeit policies.

NCAAFB – Iowa State, Notre Dame highlight AP preseason All-Americans

Notre Dame and Iowa State each has three players on The Associated Press preseason All-America team. Eight teams have at least two first-team All-Americans. Fighting Irish defensive back Kyle Hamilton is joined by teammates Cain Madden, a guard who transferred from Marshall in the offseason, and running back Kyren Williams, who made the team as an all-purpose player. Iowa State running back Breece Hall is joined by two teammates: tight end Charlie Kolar and linebacker Mike Rose. Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler is the first-team quarterback..

Pinch-runner Breyvic Valera scored the tiebreaking run on a wild pitch in the eighth inning, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox 2-1. Valera ran for Reese McGuire after the Blue Jays catcher singled off Craig Kimbrel (2-4) to begin the inning. Valera took second on a wild third strike to Bo Bichette, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored when Kimbrel uncorked another wild pitch, this time to Teoscar Hernández. Tim Mayza (3-1) pitched a perfect eighth inning to earn the win and Jordan Romano finished for his 12th save in 13 chances. The Blue Jays spoiled a strong outing by Chicago’s Lance Lynn and handed the White Sox their fourth loss in five games.

Rafael Ortega hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Chicago Cubs ended their longest home losing streak with a 6-4 win over the Colorado Rockies on Monday night. Manuel Rodriguez (2-2) earned the victory after pitching the ninth for Chicago, which snapped a 13-game skid at Wrigley Field. Reliever David Bard (7-9) allowed the game-winner after a walk-filled eighth inning helped the Cubs to get closer.

Tigers 5, Blue Jays 3 – F/11 – Cabrera hits 500th career homer, Tigers beat Jays 5-3 in 11

Miguel Cabrera became the 28th major leaguer to hit 500 home runs, Daz Cameron doubled home the winning run in the 11th inning, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-3. The 38-year-old Cabrera connected on a 1-1 pitch from left-hander Steven Matz in the sixth, sending the ball over the scoreboard in right-center field. Measured at 400 feet, the homer tied the score 1-all. Left-hander Kirby Snead (0-1), Toronto’s seventh pitcher of the game, got two quick outs in the 11th before Cameron and Willi Castro hit back-to-back RBI doubles.  Cabrera won the Triple Crown and the first of back-to-back MVP awards in 2012. He is the first Venezuelan to hit 500 homers. He is hoping to become the first hitter to reach 500 homers and 3,000 hits in the same season.

Rays 9, White Sox 0 – Rays rout White Sox 9-0, take 2 of 3 in series; Archer hurt

Backup catcher Francisco Mejía had a three-run double, five Tampa Bay pitchers combined on a seven-hitter, and the Rays beat the Chicago White Sox 9-0 in a matchup of AL division leaders. Austin Meadows had three RBIs for Tampa Bay, which took the final two games of the series after the White Sox won the opener 7-5 in 11 innings. The Rays outscored Chicago 17-4 in the two wins. Tampa Bay starter Chris Archer departed with left hip tightness after two innings. It was Archer’s first start since leaving a game April 10 against the New York Yankees with right forearm tightness.

Royals 9, Cubs 1 – Hernández strikes out eight; Royals batter Cubs 9-1

Andrew Benintendi drove in three runs, and the Kansas City Royals beat the sliding Chicago Cubs 9-1 for a sweep of their weekend series. It was Chicago’s franchise-record 13th consecutive loss at Wrigley Field. Benintendi and Carlos Santana each had three hits in Kansas City’s sixth win in seven games. Hunter Dozier doubled and drove in two runs. Royals right-hander Carlos Hernández struck out a career-high eight in seven innings, also a career best. He allowed a run and four hits.

Ryan Blaney took the lead from William Byron on a late restart and bobbed and weaved his way across the final seven laps to win at Michigan International Speedway. Blaney edged Byron by 0.077 seconds — the closest finish on the two-mile track since electronic scoring began. He has two victories this season and six overall. Kyle Larson finished third, Kyle Busch fourth, and Denny Hamlin fifth. Blaney gave Team Penske a weekend sweep of NASCAR and IndyCar races and ended Kevin Harvick’s reign as the Michigan champ. Harvick won thee last three races and four of five at the track.

IndyCar – Erratic driving upends IndyCar's championship race

A rash of overaggressive driving has jumbled the IndyCar championship fight. Pato O'Ward passed Alex Palou for the points lead after Palou was caught in a three-car accident early in Saturday's race at World Wide Technology Raceway outside of St. Louis. Palou was a victim of yet another sketchy restart of drivers slowing down and forcing a backup behind them. Series veterans believe it's become a big enough problem that race control needs to get involved. There are three races remaining and five title contenders left. O'Ward now leads Palou by 10 points and just 60 points separate the top five drivers.
