Daiden Shaw of Lake Michigan Catholic/Countryside Academy Football is the WSJM Sports Berrien County Student Athlete of the Week for the week of September 1, 2019. In the Lakers’ season opening win over Tekonsha, Daiden rushed for 221 yards and three touchdowns. He also returned three kicks for touchdowns and finished with 263 kick return yards. Then against Bridgman, he rushed for 142 yards and a touchdown.

Daiden is also a member of the Countryside Academy Basketball and Track teams, and National Honor Society. In the classroom, he carries a 3.7 grade point average.

Daiden is the son of Alden and Roxanne Shaw of Benton Harbor.

Other finalists for the week were Steve Kendall of Brandywine Football, Jack Pender of St. Joe Soccer, A.J. Deweerd of Michigan Lutheran Soccer, and Donnie Necas of Bridgman Football.

Joe Furlan of Bloomingdale High School Cross Country is our WSJM Sports Van Buren/Cass Student Athlete of the Week for the week of September 1, 2019.

Joe opened the season by winning the 11 team Bridgman Invitational with a time of 17:25.1, :20 ahead of the second place finisher. He followed that up by winning the eight team Hartford Bob Teske Invitational with a time of 17:07.8, :17 ahead of the second place finisher. Last year, he earned Academic All-State honors.

Joe is also a member of the Bloomingdale Track team and serves as a Columbia Township volunteer firefighter. In the classroom, he carries a 3.4 grade point average.

Joe is the son of John and Julie Furlan of Grand Junction.

Other finalists for the week were Andy Stermer of Lawton Soccer and Mallory Dorow of South Haven Volleyball.
