“I decided to come to law school as it turns out for exactly the right reason. Because I thought then and still think that law school is a door-opening education, whether you wind up practicing law or not.

“The kinds of things you learn in law school are transferable to virtually any job that you do. The methodology, the analytics, and so on. So I thought, you know, whether or not I wound up practicing law, it would be a practical way to try to earn a living rather than sitting on a mountain-top and philosophizing.”

Peter Low, Hardy Cross Dillard Professor of Law, Emeritus:

“The first class I taught was a first year class, and of course, first year students are completely clueless. They have no idea what law school is about. One of the hard things, indeed, about being a first year law student is figuring out what you’re supposed to learn. Because, ironically, it is not the law.

“You’re supposed to learn how to do law, if you will, not what the laws are. The reason for that is very simple: what the laws are changes all the time. What you’ve got to do is figure out how to penetrate the law, how to learn the law, how to self-educate yourself with the law. So when after twenty-five years of practice, or five years of practice, or thirty minutes of practice, you have a problem you don’t know anything about, you can go out and self-educate yourself and learn how to deal with it.”

“For the first two years that I was provost, I also taught one course here in the law school. I had given a student a C, and students who do poorly on an exam sometimes want to talk about it. Of course I said, Yes, I’d be happy to talk to you.

“So the student came over, very formal. We talked about the weather and sports, this that and the other thing. And I just could not get him to focus on the reason he had come. And I was sitting there wondering, why did you come? You’re not interested in anything I have to say about the exam.

“So he got up to leave and I finally figured out why he had come. As he went through the door at the end of the meeting, he looked over at me and he said, ‘You know, you taught my father.’ Then he smiled and he said, ‘You gave him a D.’ So he came to gloat!”
