“The year after law school, I clerked at the Supreme Court of the United States for Chief Justice Earl Warren. I started to say the highest court in the land, and that put in mind the basketball court that is above the Supreme Court room.

“Justice White was on the court then, and he, as many people will know, was a world-class athlete. He used to come up and play basketball with us all the time. I can tell you first hand that he played basketball like a football player.

“We had an incident while we were up there playing basketball. At one point, one of the Justice Department lawyers stole a pass and was engaged in a one-man fast break down the floor and got tackled, literally, from behind. And as he got up and turned around with a burst of obscenities, he ended his tirade with, ‘Mr. Justice White, sir.’”

“Well I can remember when I first came here, probably within the first year, one of the labs I was setting up for was using humongous cockroaches.

“And the company where I bought them used to send them in a large box, but inside the large box were these little white, round ice cream boxes, and in each of the ice cream boxes would probably be twenty or so of these large roaches. And that was very handleable, I was very used to that.

“Right up until the day where I opened the large box and whoever had packed that box had not put them inside little boxes inside, they were all loose. So at the time I had three work-study students, myself, and about 300 cockroaches pouring out of large box in my office. To this day, I occasionally see a descendent coming out of a drain in Gilmer Hall.”

“I feel that a college and university -- yes, it’s about the education, of course -- that just as important is to have students to take that time to find out who they are.

“To learn that, yes, there are consequences to the decisions that you make, whether good or bad. Yes, if it turns out bad, you need to be able to take accountability for that. To learn to be responsible for how you deal with your world without your parents there to make sure you’re up on time, to make sure you’ve done your homework, to make sure you’ve done all things.

“To learn how to become the person that you were meant to be, yourself, surrounded by your peers who are in the same stage as you are.”

“The world needs taking the facts, putting them together, and move on to a big picture, big answering of the questions.

“And it concerns me that I feel like sometimes these days the university -- not this particular university only but many universities -- are sort of setting the bar where the students are. And I believe the bar should be set above that. And I believe that students should need to feel that they need to work hard to succeed. Success isn’t much when you haven’t worked hard for it.

“I believe holding a high bar, those students will rise to it. These are smart kids, they are. I just am not sure they’ve been asked to rise to that bar, up until now.”

“You know, I think the general reputation I have is more or less the Dragon Lady. When I walk into a lab room, it goes silent.

“People check to make sure their water bottles aren’t showing, make sure they don’t have their cell phones out. I’ve been told by some of my peer teachers that they were terrified of me when they were students, but they are so glad to know that that’s not really me. That’s what I am as far as my job goes in making sure that policies are followed and that exercises are done. And hopefully that students are learning something, that’s the goal.

“So my job is basically to do that, and that sort of means I can’t be a buddy. I need to be sort of bad cop sometimes.”

“When President Casteen was in office, we were invited to have dinner up at the president’s residence. One of the entrees was chicken.

“We were served our meals, and I had my drumstick about halfway up when I noticed someone sit down next to me in the empty chair. It was President Casteen sitting next to me. Well, I stopped that drumstick in mid-air, and all I could think to say was, ‘Well, damn.’

“Well, God bless President Casteen, the man had a sense of humor. He looked at me and he said, ‘Let’s go for it.’ And he picked up his chicken and he started chowing down as well, and everything was just fine after that.”

“I feel that a college and university is really kind of your last safe place. What I mean by ‘safe place’ is where you are still able to have some missteps, to make some mistakes.

“To hopefully figure out, Is really what my mom or my dad want me to do really what I want to do? And to gain the maturity, and to gain the confidence to say, No, this is what I want to do.

“And so I hope universities maintain the cognizance of both sides of an “education” -- that it’s a very personal thing as well as an academic thing.”
