  • Recluse: New Light
New Light, from Ride That Fantasy by Recluse.
This is the 2001 album Ride That Fantasy by Devon trio Recluse.
Sadly we have no information accompanying this album called Ride That Fantasy by Recluse, other than the track titles and the name of the band, Recluse.
We are fairly sure that it is Alex Painter on guitar and vocals and writing most of the material, although as to whether or not Chris White and Tim Desmond provide the bass and drums (or more, or less) and other such detail remains largely mysterious. It sounds as if Alex played a baritone guitar, or at least tuned one of his guitars down somewhat, for some of the songs.
We like Recluse a lot and hope its members are still making great music somewhere, somehow.
Recluse were a three piece band from Devon who wrote the most disarmingly haunting and powerful songs. They were three of the most polite and unassuming young men if you met any of them, yet when put on a stage with some instruments to play they produced the most gloriously demonic musical cacophony.
The main songwriter in Recluse was Alex Painter (guitar, vocals) and when he left the area to study music at Salford the band seemed to grind to a halt. This was a great shame as he was one of the most accomplished young rock musicians and composers in Devon. Chris White played bass and Tim Desmond drums to complete the line-up.
As far as we know, the band made just two albums – Propaganda in 2000 and Ride That Fantasy in 2001. We hope you enjoy listening to the music of Recluse as much as we still do, even after all these years.

  • Guarana: Cathy Says
    Cathy Says by Guarana.
Are Guarana the finest band Guernsey ever produced? We think so. In fact, we think Guarana are one of the finest bands the planet ever produced. There are few bands more capable of evoking the sheer power of raw emotion. Their live sets were each like a precious multi-faceted jewel to be treasured.
After leaving Guernsey to try to forge a career on the north island, Guarana found themselves based in Exeter. From there they proceeded to wow audiences across the south of England with their shows, which were full of humour as well as stunning songwriting. Their sound was much bigger than your usual three-piece, thanks mainly to singer and guitarist Danny le Pelley’s unusual chords using jangly open strings.
Unfortunately we have very little information on what happened to the band and where they are now. There was a website with a realplayer stream and photos and discussion, and somewhere out in the universe there is a lot of video footage as every show they played that we remember was filmed by a tall amiable French fellow.
Guarana’s previous contact details were as follows, if you use the Wayback Machine or the Archive – www.guarana-music.co.uk and [email protected] – we hope you enjoy the music of Guarana as much as we do.
The Real World EP was a CD release by Guarana in November 2000. These are studio recordings made at a time when the band were in fine form. There is very little information to pass on from the sleeve notes, everything on there has been copied to here other than the distorted photo of the drummer on the front cover and the bass with poised thumb on the rear.

There are no reasons in the real world.”
