The first podcast episode of two, discussing the Biological Weapons Convention at Fifty, with three of the key figures who have helped shaped it:
Dr. Matthew Meselson, molecular biologist, Professor at Harvard University, Dr John Walker,Former Head of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Arms Control and Disarmament Research Unit, and Amb. Sergey Batsanov, former USSR and Russian Ambassador to the Conference on Disarmament.
It is an impossible task to do justice in introducing these three highly distinguished gentleman. So it is best to keep it very brief, and put links in the description below for anyone who wishes to find more about them.
If one types into a search engine today, 'the most beautiful experiment' without even specifying the science in this case biology, Dr. Meselson's name comes immediately as the result. The beauty was in the elegant simplicity of the experiments that Dr. Meselson and Dr. Frank Stoll designed to confirm the DNA replicates by the double helix structure as Watson and Crick had predicted. Dr. Meselson also solved the Sverdlovsk anthrax mystery, and it was decisive in the ending of the use of Agent Orange in Vietnam. And if there's one person who can be set to be the critical force in the world now having a biological and toxin weapons convention, it is he.
Dr. John Walker was head of the arms control and Disarmament Research Unit of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office until May 2020, when he retired. There is a handful of people in the world who have been as involved at a high level over the past three decades in the work of the biological, chemical, and nuclear arms control as Dr. Walker.
Ambassador Sergey Batsanov, who was the Permanent Representative of the USSR, and then of the Russian Federation, to the Conference on Disarmament from 1989 to 1993. After his work in helping negotiate the Chemical Weapons Convention, He then worked as director of special projects at UBC W. Since 2005, to the present, Ambassador Batsanov,, has been the Director of the Geneva office of the PUGWASH conferences on science and world affairs.
