  • What Is Cultivated Meat and How Do You Grow Meat From Cells: Dr. Nicole Kleger, sallea

Cultured meat or cultivated meat, made from cells, is not science-fiction any more.

    It is pure science.

Though I could not help but thinking about Nancy Kress science-fiction book Beggars and Choosers when preparing to this episode. She writes about a world in 2106 where the society is split into a ruling class of Donkeys, who have access to real food, and Livers, who rely on government-provided cheap synthetic and soy-based food. It's just, the current reality of cell-grown meat already looks way more promising than the one in Kress's 1994 novel.

What if cultivated meat is healthier and tastes better than meat an animal meat?

Would you be tempted by a tasty steak grown in a lab?

In this episode, you’ll hear about

    • what is cultivated meat?
    • why it’s called lab meat and beer isn’t
    • how meat is cultivated from cells
    • does it taste like meat
    • how healthy is it

    and much more.

So today’s story isn’t about a medtech, biotech or digital health startup but it did begin with medtech in mind. And it is absolutely fascinating.

My guest, Dr. Nicole Kleger is the CEO of sallea. She began working on this project during her Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and continued through her Master’s and Ph.D. She’s also a deidcated instructor of Bodypump, Bodyattack, and Bodybalance.

sallea is a Swiss startup, an ETH Zurich spin-off, developing edible scaffolds to grow cultivated meat. Their scaffolds, which enable cells to grow into meat, promise your taste buds real meat experience – without sacrificing animals.

Check out where is sallea on their goal to match the meat structure with taste in cultured meat

  • Better Recovery After Ventricular Assist Devices Implantation at End-Stage Heart Failure: Dr. Andreas Kourouklis, COSKIN

By helping pumping blood, Ventricular Assist Devices during end-stage heart failure can prolong life. They can be implanted instead of a heart transplant or while waiting for a heart transplant.

They may, however, come with some unwanted side effects, such as infections of a wound that doesn’t heal. The reason is that a cable connecting the Ventricular Assist Device to its power source must pass through the skin on the abdomen and remain there.

This wound, a small hole in the abdomen, where the cable goes through the skin, would not heal and is therefore susceptible to infections that lead to hospitalization. Why?

You’ll hear about it in this episode, as well as

    • what Ventricular Assist Devices are
    • how a wound heals – from mechanical perspective
    • what are mechanical and biological properties of the skin
    • what is end-stage heart failure
    • what makes a skin-friendly cable
    • and for what else could such a biocompatible cable be used

My guest, Dr. Andreas Kourouklis, is a co-founder and the CEO of COSKIN. With a Ph.D. in biomaterials for biomedical applications he worked at Princeton University and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign before joining ETH Zurich.

COSKIN is a Swiss startup that develops a biocompatible medical cable to support end-stage heart failure patients. Unlike today’s cables powering mechanical circulatory support systems such as VADs, it resembles human tissue and prevents infections.

  • Boosting Sports Performance with Pupil Control: Dr. Marc Bächinger, myflow

This might be a tool that sports psychologists have dreamed of:
a way to measure athletes’ mental training efficacy
    for boosting sports performance.

You know, like when a runner runs slower today than the day before
their coach has the data to compare.

If that same runner puts less effort into their mental training,
their sports psychologist would not know.

This is what my guest is working on,
giving mental coaches a VR headset and metrics to rely on
to help athletes find flow and improve sports performance

    You will hear

    • why do professional athletes need mental training
    • what flow is
    • how your pupil size changes when you are relaxed or aroused
    • and how by controlling your pupil, you can control your mind

Dr. Marc Bächinger is the co-founder and CEO of MindMetrix. He is a neuroscientist with a Ph.D. in health sciences and technology who completed his postdoc in pupil-based biofeedback to modulate the arousal system in the human brain.

MindMetrix is an early-stage Swiss startup that develops myflow. This Virtual Reality application allows professional athletes and sports psychologists to track, analyze, and optimize mental training by giving feedback on the size of their pupils.

  • Repairing Spinal Cord for a Wheelchair Free Future: Prof. Giuseppe Perale, Regenera

We are speaking about the world where wheelchairs will not be needed after a spinal cord injury.

There are 250 000-500 000 spinal cord injuries globally each year.

“A bunch of crazy guys,” in the words of my guest, him included, wants the spinal cord to self-regenerate.

He is sure that in the future, we won’t be even speaking about regenerating the spinal cord after an accident

    but about healing.

In this episode, you will hear

    • how much time it takes from a spinal cord injury event, an accident, to reach an operating theatre – in Switzerland
    • why this time is crucial
    • how proprietary hydrogel and stem cells stop the cascade of events further damaging the spinal cord
    • how mice after a spinal cord injury, could walk again
    • and when will people after the spinal cord injury not need a wheelchair

Prof. Giuseppe Perale is the CEO of Regenera. A bioengineer who became hooked on regenerative medicine in high school and never let go. Apart from heading the neuroregeneration research lab at USI, Università della Svizzera italiana, he is also a motorcycle rider and a pilot.

Regenera is an Austrian-Swiss startup that aims to repair spinal cord injury in the subacute state. Their SpinoSave combines biomaterial – hydrogel and stem cells harvested from the patient’s fat tissue. The co-founders are Giuseppe Perale; Filippo Rossi, a chemical engineer; Pietro Rossi; Michael Raghunath, CMO.
