Top Auto CEO Says He May Pull Production Out of Mexico If Trump Follows Through on Tariffs

The CEO of Nissan has said he may be forced to move production out of Mexico if Donald Trump imposes tariffs on exports.

The head of the Japanese automaker made the comments during a press conference on Friday.

“From Mexico to the U.S., we are exporting a significant number of cars this fiscal year,” Uchida said, according to Reuters.

”320,000 units are exported from Mexico to the U.S., and if the high tariffs are imposed, we need to be ready for this,” he continued.

”Maybe we can transfer the production of these models elsewhere if this were the decision, we will think how we can make it a reality while monitoring the situation.”

A 1974 federal law forces the President to avoid efficiency and cost savings

Average Americans can be forgiven for not understanding how Joe Biden was able to “forgive” student debt and stop Trump’s Border Wall construction without pushback from the media, Congress, or the courts, while Trump’s efforts to make government more efficient are being blocked at every turn.

 The Impoundment and Control Act of 1974 was passed at the height of the Watergate debacle and was a calculated move by Congress to stop Nixon’s so-called Imperial Presidency.

Understood in its most basic terms, Congress says that if it voted to spend money on something, the president may not change that amount, even if he can achieve the exact same outcome by spending less money. To put it bluntly, the Act says that the president is not allowed to save the country money.

As a hypothetical example, assume that Congress has budgeted $1 billion to rebuild the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. The President, however, finds a way to re-construct the bridge to the exact specifications laid out by Congress for $500 million, saving half the cost. Under the Act’s explicit terms, the president would be barred from this cost-saving approach. He must spend all $1 billion. If this has you scratching your head—well, welcome to the club.

Trump IRS Purge: 15,000 Employees Have Been Identified for Potential Termination as Early as Next Week 

The Trump administration has executed one of the most significant workforce reductions in U.S. history, targeting over 200,000 probationary employees across multiple government agencies.

According to data from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), as of March 2024, approximately 220,000 federal workers had not yet completed their probationary period.

An additional 288,000 employees had between one and two years of service, making them vulnerable to restructuring efforts.

It was first reported that Trump’s administration plans to axe around 9,000 jobs at the IRS, primarily targeting employees still in their probationary period.

However, according to ABC News citing sources familiar with the matter, as many as 15,000 IRS workers have been identified for possible termination as early as next week.

US retail spending plunged last month, falling for the first time since August

American shoppers pulled back on their spending last month for the first time since August as stubborn inflation continued to bite and harsh weather curbed economic activity.

Retail sales plunged 0.9% in January from the prior month, the Commerce Department said Friday. That’s down sharply from December’s upwardly revised 0.7% gain and well below economists’ expectations of a 0.4% decline. The figures are adjusted for seasonal swings but not inflation.

Shoppers reined in their spending across multiple categories last month. Specialty stores and auto dealers were hit hardest, with spending falling 4.6% and 3%, respectively.

Inflation could worsen if President Donald Trump keeps his promise of imposing 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada as soon as March 1. The Trump administration is also weighing levying reciprocal tariffs in April. Most economists say Trump’s hefty duties would likely ramp up price pressures in the US, contrary to the Trump administration’s belief that foreign countries will pay for the tariffs

Abolish property taxes? DeSantis endorses the idea and explains how it could be done in Florida

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis endorsed the idea of abolishing property taxes throughout the Sunshine State, but explained that it would require a constitutional amendment.

The governor, who is currently serving his second term after a decisive re-election victory in Florida's 2022 gubernatorial contest, was responding to someone on X who advocated abolishing property taxes in the state and asked what would need to be done to make that happen.

"Property taxes are local, not state. So we’d need to do a constitutional amendment (requires 60% of voters to approve) to eliminate them (which I would support) or even to reform/lower them," DeSantis noted.

"We should put the boldest amendment on the ballot that has a chance of getting that 60%," he continued. 

"I agree that taxing land/property is the more oppressive and ineffective form of taxation," the governor added.

US rescinds UN climate fund pledges 

The US under former presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama had pledged about $6bn combined to the GCF, with the most recent commitment announced at the Cop 28 climate talks in Dubai. But the two administrations were able to deliver only $2bn of the funding.

The US has canceled about $4bn in pledged money to the UN's Green Climate Fund, the latest sign a sharp policy shift under President Donald Trump.

The State Department late last week said the US "has rescinded outstanding pledges to the Green Climate Fund," but did not provide any further details.

Trump tariffs to stoke inflation in 2025: corporate economists

Eight out of 10 corporate economists forecast that U.S. tariffs will stoke inflation this year, Wolters Kluwer said Monday as the Trump administration intensified its shakeup of trade policy by threatening to impose 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

Economists at companies ranging from Ford Motor Co. to Morgan Stanley and KPMG to Eaton Corp marked up their forecast for the increase in the consumer price index this year to 2.7% from 2.5% in October, Wolters Kluwer found in a survey.

Trump says US may have less debt than thought because of fraud 

 U.S. President Donald Trump  said his administration was examining U.S. Treasury debt payments for possible fraud and suggested that the country's $36 trillion debt load might not be that high.

"We're even looking at Treasuries," Trump said. "There could be a problem - you've been reading about that, with Treasuries and that could be an interesting problem."

He added: "It could be that a lot of those things don't count.

Trump to Launch Investigation Into California’s “$130 Billion” High-Speed Rail Disaster Project

President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he will launch a comprehensive investigation into California’s beleaguered High-Speed Rail project.

Trump lambasted the project as “the worst managed project I’ve ever seen,” hinting at what many conservatives have known all along: this boondoggle is nothing but a colossal waste of taxpayer money.

Trump said from the Oval Office on Tuesday:

“One of the things I want to investigate rapidly—because I’ve never seen anything to this extent—is the train that’s being built between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

It is the worst-managed project I think I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen some of the worst. Billions and billions—hundreds of billions—of dollars over budget.

Trump eyes 'reciprocal' trade deals over flat fee tariffs

 Trump said Friday he was considering reciprocal trade deals with countries rather than flat fee tariffs on imported goods from other countries.

Trump touted tariffs throughout his campaign and during his inauguration said tariff revenue would make the U.S. "rich as hell." He also said that tariff revenue would lower the tax burden on American taxpayers.

On Friday, the president said he would announce reciprocal trade agreements next week with multiple countries.

As part of its continued war on the “Green New Deal,” the Trump administration ordered states to end a multi-billion dollar program to build electric vehicle chargers along interstate highways.

  the Federal Highway Administration released a memo directing states to halt the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program, a $5 billion provision under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law signed by former President Joe Biden in 2021. The law also included another $2.5 billion for EV chargers in communities and neighborhoods.
