In Episode 17, Regicide and the Historian, we told how in 548 bce, Ts’ui Chu / Cui Zhu murdered his monarch for raping his wife. Today’s episode follows the Right Minister Ts’ui Chu through the disputes over inheritance between his sons, his firstborn Ch’eng /Cheng and his little brother Chiang / Jiang, and his new wife’s son Ming. In 546 bce, the brothers sought help from Left Minister Ch’ing /Qing Feng, which did not prove to be a wise decision. Tungkuo Yen/ Dongguo Yan and T’ang Wuchiu / Tang Wujiu were murdered, with the help of Lu P’u P’ieh / Lu Pupie. This episode is pretty dark.

徐世勣生于西元五九四年，正直隋朝中期；十七歲，農民起義，徐世勣加入翟讓的瓦崗軍。李密殺翟讓，徐世勣歸順唐高祖。高祖稱他為「純臣」，封曹國公、英國公，賜姓李。後避唐太宗李世民的諱，去「世」字，就是兵法上赫赫有名的李勣。

李勣常謂人：「我年十二三時為亡賴賊，逢人則殺。十四五為難當賊，有所不愜則殺人。十七八為佳賊，臨陳乃殺之。二十為大將，用兵以救人死。」但也有他很貼心的一面。

The Tang dynasty (618 – 916 ce) was a period of great rulers, artists, poets, writers, musicians, dancers, with advances in administration, technology, agriculture, and other fields. But it was not always an easy time.

The Emperor Ming (Hsuan / Xuan) was worried about threats from within the palace, but did not see that his greatest danger was his beloved courtier, the ambitious Sogdian Roxan Kang / An Lushan. An started a rebellion that took nine years to end, killing about half of the population of China.

The great commander Kuo Tseyi / Guo Ziyi led the effort to quell the rebellion. Afterwards, one of his sons, Kuo Hsi / Guo Xi did not control his troops, bringing grief to the local people. The regional governor, Pai Hsiaote / Bai Xiaode was helpless, but the commander Tuan Hsiushih / Duan Xiushi settled everything without bloodshed.

In 205 bce, after the Ch’in / Qin had fallen, Liu Pang/Bang of the Han and Hsiang/Xiang Yu of the Ch’u / Chu were fighting to the death. Liu attacked Hsiang with an army of 560,000. Hsiang escaped with 30,000 men, and although vastly outnumbered, returned to defeat the Han. Liu was fleeing. A Chu commander named Ting / Ding caught up with him and was about to defeat him, but then let him go. Liu established the Han dynasty. How do you think he dealt with Ting?
