In 205 bce, after the Ch’in / Qin had fallen, Liu Pang/Bang of the Han and Hsiang/Xiang Yu of the Ch’u / Chu were fighting to the death. Liu attacked Hsiang with an army of 560,000. Hsiang escaped with 30,000 men, and although vastly outnumbered, returned to defeat the Han. Liu was fleeing. A Chu commander named Ting / Ding caught up with him and was about to defeat him, but then let him go. Liu established the Han dynasty. How do you think he dealt with Ting?

Around 320 bce, Ssuma Hsi / Sima Xi acquired great power in Chungshan / Zhongshan. Lady Yin was locked in a struggle with Lady Chiang / Jiang to see who could become Queen. Lady Yin detested Ssuma Hsi, so her winning would put Hsi into a precarious situation.

The stories I tell are mostly taken from books. Today we take books for granted, but in earlier times, few people were literate and books were rare. Most important information was committed to memory, by singing and chanting. Before paper became common in China, most writing was done on strips of bamboo or wood: heavy, bulky, cumbersome. Reading them entailed difficulties. We do not know the beginning or end of today’s story, but a misinterpretation of it had long lasting, disastrous consequences.

商周寫文字很隨性。偏旁可有可無，也可以換來換去。書籍不多，而一本書，又重又佔空間：一本漢書，當時大概七十公斤以上，不是可以攜帶的讀物，所以古人書籍、閱讀的習慣與我們不同。

Ban Biao (Pan Piao) was a historian in the Han dynasty. When he died, his son Ban Gu (Pan Ku) continued his work, and his daughter Ban Zhao (Pan Chao, 49? – 120? ce) finished their great work, The Han Book, the Book of the Han. The second son, Ban Chao (Pan Ch’ao, 32 – 102 ce) went to the Western Territories and did great deeds. He fought the Xiongnu (Hsiungnu) and secured the Silk Road. He used drastic methods to deal with Xiongnu diplomats in Kroraïna (Lolan, Shanshan), a Tocharian country. The Tocharians were the easternmost speakers of IndoEuropean languages, in modern day Xinjiang, near Lop Nor.
