After the rise of Muhammad across the Arabian peninsula in the 7th Century, Christian armies faced a serious threat to Western Civilization. Things came to a head in 636 at the Battle of Yarmuk, when Heraclius' Byzantine army met with crushing defeat before an advancing Muslim army. Many think the conflict between these two religions started with the first Crusade in 1095, but it starts long before that.
