There are different words used to describe the levels of a relationship with another person. These words describe how close we are to the other person. The words could be,  Stranger or acquaintance or friend or good friend or best friend. What word would you use to describe your relationship with God? 

There are many different words that can be used to describe the character of a person. A person could be gracious, or they could be harsh. A person could be generous, or they could be hard hearted. A person could be forgiving or they could hold a grudge. What words would you use to describe God?

The adjectives and adverbs that we use to describe God, tell the story of what we think of him, and how we relate to him.

The words you use to describe God indicate what is in your heart towards him. Are you bound by religious duty or do you serve Him because you know you are loved? Do you know God loves you? Restricted, restrained, handcuffed, chained, imprisoned. Just a few words to describe what fear and failure and shame and pain do to our lives. How can we be set free? How do we walk away from yesterday and it’s trauma and turmoil? How do we live beyond our past? Far beyond being locked in a cage the pain of being locked into a trauma can travel with us. There’s no place to run and hide from what abides within our heart and mind. But there is someone who has come to set us free. There is someone who has paid the ransom to the kidnapper called sin, the kidnapper called fear, The kidnapper that holds us bound in darkness. Where do you go when you feel afraid? Is there a place where you feel perfectly safe? Do you have a castle high that can protect you from your enemy? What brings peace to your heart? It’s unfortunate in these crazy days that we turn to things of the world for protection from our fears. There definitely are challenges that we face today that can definitely provoke negative and fearful thoughts. What do we do when confronted or assaulted by these fears? There’s an old saying that goes something like this. ‘Engage brain before opening mouth.” There are situations in our lives at times where we say something and when others hear about what we said they ask us “what were you thinking?“ 

Sometimes we say things, that to say the least, or not productive. We say things that literally curse our lives. And in our society unfortunately, there are way too many catchphrases that we say, sometimes daily, that do not bring light and life into the situation. “I’ll never get ahead.“ “I can never do it right.“ “ nothing ever goes my way.“ “I’ll never catch up with my bills.“ “That scared me to death.“ “That’s to die for.“ “That burns me up.“ 

So what are the things you’re saying about your life these days? Are you speaking the promises of God or are you speaking the things of this world? The things of this world are usually a lie of some sort. In today’s episode, I want to help us all become aware of what comes out of our mouths and the impact that it has. I  want to help us stop agreeing with and speaking lies and get us to speak the truth over ourselves so that the challenges of our past stay in our past. Have you ever had one of those days when you feel dirty? I call it being icky sticky. But The dirty I’m talk about is Not because you’ve been working hard in the dust or dirt, but because you’ve walked away from God and sinned. Your heart feels dirty from guilt and shame. You feel stained, but it’s in your brain. The good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ is that he came to take away our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. You do not have to carry the guilt of failure and sin. You may have acted like the prodigal son or daughter, but remember the father forgave the prodigal and received them back into the family. There are times when all the things on our plate can begin to bury us. Work and family and friends and our community and so many other little details of life pile up on our plate and overwhelm us. Then you can add things from your past that try to push their way in and cover over the good things of your life. They endeavor to tell you that your plate is eventually going to come crashing down to the ground spilling everything everywhere into great chaos, if there wasn't enough chaos to begin with. What do you need in your life? And secondly, is it a driving need or something more basic? What do you need today, right now? A lot of people will say they need money. But as we have all been told money can't buy everything. Others will say they need health or they need love or they need the most basic things of life. And once you've decided your most pressing need, where are you going to find what you need? And what will you give to obtain what you need? Who or what will be your provider? And can you trust the one or the thing that promises to be your provider? No matter what our age we are always someone's children and we all need help outside of ourselves. I have chosen to believe that the God and father of the Lord Jesus Christ is my provider. And as I have lived for decades with that belief he has not failed to provide my needs and beyond. Do you have an expectation that what God has said will actually come to pass? That’s what HOPE is, an expectation of fulfillment. Sometimes people shrug and say, “well, I hope so.“ That is usually an expression of doubt. In the world today we have so much to be challenged by that our expectation, our hope of being safe and provided for has definitely been challenged. What do you hope in? Where is your expectation? Do you believe that the government will take care of you? Do you believe your bank account will take care of you? Do you believe you are prepared enough for the coming future? Where is your hope?
