It features two songs from Broadway musicals: Aussie tenor David Hobson sings If I Loved You from Carousel and Broadway singer and actor Jerry Lanning performs the well-known song If I Were A Rich Man from Fiddler On The Roof. The beautiful signature song If features the angelic voice of writer and singer, David Gates with the group Bread. Aussie favourite Olivia Newton-John pops up with the Bob Dylan penned If Not For You and Gordon Lightfoot sings his somewhat sad ballad If You Could Read My Mind. The Beatles conclude the program with If I Fell.

This week’s program features songs about the three armed forces: navy, army and air force. Starting the program is a song based on a real life incident during World War II – the pursuit and sinking of the German battleship the Bismarck. Johnny Horton turned this into his best selling song Sink The Bismarck in the late sixties. Another song based on a real ship is Wreck Of The John B, sung by prolific singer Jimmie Rodgers. The Vietnam War was the inspiration for two Aussie songs – Axiom’s Arkansas Grass and the Johnny Young song, sung by Ronnie Burns, Smiley. The air force is featured in Leo Sayer’s Aviation and the navy in the Village People’s In The Navy.

Linda Rondstat started out leading the Stone Poneys while George Harrison and John Lennon were members of the famous Beatles.  Buddy Holly fronted the Crickets, Lindsey Buckingham was with Fleetwood Mac,Ben E King the Drifters and Len Barry started out with the Dovells.

This program presents imaginative interpretations of Science Fiction. The opening instrumental is the theme from Close Encounters Of The Third Kind by Mecco. Two songs explore the bleak acopalyptic vision of man’s future starting with the Zager and Evans’ one hit wonder In The Year 2525 and The Final Countdown from Dutch group, Europe. There is an assortment of weird creatures such as Warren Zevon‘s Werewolves Of London, Little Blue Man (Petula Clark) and the Big Bopper‘s novelty The Purple People Eater Meets The Witch Doctor. Popular film ET is represented by Neil Diamond‘s brilliant Heartlight while Van McCoy puts a disco edge to Star Wars: The Next Generation. A curiosity is Two Little Men In A Flying Saucer from the legendary Ella FItzgerald.

This week we celebrate World Environment Day by presenting songs whose writers expressed concerns about our environment. Some of the songs date way back to an earlier time such as Marvin Gaye’s sorrowful plea to save the environment in his song Mercy Mercy Me (also called the Ecology song). There are several songs about water and air pollution – The Beach Boy’s Don’t Go Near The Water, Tom Lehrer’s Pollution and the short song from the rock musical Hair titled Air. More local concerns are voiced in Let The Franklin Flow from Australian band Goanna, Don’t Kill The Whale from Yes and Only So Much Oil In The Ground by Tower Of Power. Three songs deal with the destructive force of progress on the environment – Verdelle Smith’s only hit Tar And Cement, Pete Seger’s Cement Octopus and finally, Joni Mitchell’s classic Big Yellow Taxi.

Melanie is trying out her new roller skates while Teresa Brewer is playing with her hula hoop. Frankie Laine takes a gamble on love and the Drifters enjoy spending a Saturday Night at the Movies.

Simply defined, pronouns are words we use in place of nouns. In the musical decades we cover it was easy. Pronouns fell into binary parts – male and female and ‘it’ for animals and objects. But now the English language is struggling to keep up with the plethora of gender identities which have emerged over the last few years. There simply aren’t words in our language to describe some of these recognised and accepted gender identities. So in this program Pronouns are binary. Starting with Rod Stewart‘s masterful rendition of the old standard They Can’t Take That Away From Me the program roams over different pronouns such as He Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother (The Holllies), to the strong voice of Samantha Sang You Made Me What I Am to the grammatically correct Just Between You And Me from The Chordettes.
