And of course, the program finishes on a party with Leslie Gore’s It’s My Party.

Composers and arrangers often include different sounds in their songs to create a distinctive and catchy element. In their masterpiece Good Vibrations as well as the title, an unusual instrument, the Electro-Theremin, is employed by The Beach Boys. Named the ‘father of exotica’, arranger/composer Martin Denny uses all kinds of sounds heard in an African village in his popular instrumental Quiet Village. Shirley Ellis has a great time with the exuberant Clapping Song. Sam Cooke evokes the sounds of a prison chain gang in his big hit Chain Gang while The Beatles rock it out with their version of Twist And Shout.

It is surprising how many singers and other entertainers (especially in USA) have Italian heritage. This program features a few of them. Dion Di Mucci had many big hits in the 50s and 60s none bigger than his smash hit Runaround Sue. Some singers preferred romantic ballads such as Gennaro Louis Vitiliano (Jerry Vale) with You Don’t Know Me or Al Martino with I Love You Because. Teen idols Walden Robert Cassotto (Bobby Darin) and Robert Ridarelli (Bobby Rydell) are represented with Dream Lover and Sway. Two prominent female singers with Italian heritage were Rosemary Victoria Yuro (Timi Yuro) with her tearjerker Hurt and top female singer Concetta Rosa Maria Franconero (Connie Francis) with one of her big hits Stupid Cupid. The Italian flavour is enhanced by three songs sung in Italian: Save Your Love from Renee & Renato; Te Amo from Umberto Tozzi and Felicita Al Bano & Romina Power.

Memories of a lost love welled up as Rob presented Air Supply’s All Out Of Love. Joe’s outlook on life shines through with two of his selected songs: Frank Sinatra’s That’s Life and Dionne Warwick’s plea What The World Needs Now. Aussie representation comes from Kate Ceberano (Everything’s Alright) in her role as Mary Magdalene in the Australian version of Jesus Christ Superstar. LRB’s superb hit Reminiscing was another Australian tribute.
