  • The Voices 2
The focal point for this week’s theme is the vocal range and capacity of the following artists…
THE VOICES show commences with the distinctive angelic soprano of Nana Mouskouri displayed in The White Rose of Athens followed by the ‘Caruso’ of rock music, the bel canto tenor Roy Orbison singing In Dreams. The combination of mezzo soprano Aretha Franklin and baritone George Michael scored a Grammy for their song Í knew You Were Waiting. John Farnham, with his recognizable tenor voice, supports his imaginative interpretation of the Beatles’ Help.
Award winning performer Daryl Braithwaite achieved gold with his One Summer score. Two of our favourite LGBTIQ+ performers include the romantic, soulful tenor of Johnny Mathis with his version of I’ve Grown Accustomed To Her Face and the distinctive mezzo soprano of Dusty Springfield with her delivery of You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me. Smooth voiced baritone Al Martino features in the devotional song Mary In The Morning and the beautiful high tenor voice of Jerry Vale in Pretend You Don’t See Her. The undeniable voice of Mama Cass leads the Mamas and Papas through their song Words of Love and the wonderful low contralto voice of Cher is evident in her version of the Shoop Shoop Song. The final song (You Don’t Know) How Glad I Am belongs to the sassy jazz  pop singer Nancy Wilson.

  • Antarctica
This week we have a guest. Prudence is a presenter on another community radio station and a golfing friend of Mossy’s. She is also an avid listener to ‘Yesterday Once More’. Among Prudence’s ‘bucket list’ is a desire to travel to Antarctica. Unfortunately due to the pandemic she hasn’t been able to go so we are bringing ‘Antarctica’ to her. Instead of our regular theme we start with the Vangelis’ track ‘Antarctica’ and later a rather weird song from John Cale – ‘Antarctica Starts Here’. Continuing the theme of cold, ice and snow are Grateful Dead‘s ‘Cold Rain And Snow’ and Aussie band’s Mondo Rock with the Ross Wilson classic ‘Cool World’. Olivia Newton-John contributes with a nice ballad ‘Angels In The Snow’ while the program ends with another Aussie, Liv Maesson and her hit ‘Snowbird’.

  • Musical Instruments
This week it’s the Musical Instruments’ time to shine. The focus is not on the song or the singers but rather the musical instruments that contribute to the various and different sounds in songs.  Familiar and not so familiar devices are represented. Mossy showcases the Trumpet in Penny Lane, the Flute in Living in the Past, the Bagpipes in It’s A Long Way To The Top, the Violin in Livin’ Thing, the universally used Harmonica in I Was Made To Love Her and Sailor’s Glass of Champagne using their custom-designed Nickelodeon comprising two upright pianos, two synthesizers, mini organs and glockenspiels.
Rob’s interesting line-up includes the Penny Whistle in You Can Call Me Al, the Harpsicord in Come On-A My Place, the Ocarina in Wild Thing, the Theremin in Good Vibrations, Buffy Sainte-Marie’s Jews Harp in Doggett’s Gap and one of the oldest instruments, the drums in Let There Be Drums.

  • Memorable Years
This week Rob and Mossy are presenting songs from some memorable years in their lives. They are also placing these years in a worldwide context. For Rob years like 1978 (birth of his daughter) spiked a memory by Axiom‘s ‘Little Ray Of Sunshine’, 1967 (his arrival in Melbourne) listening to Johnny Rivers singing ‘Baby I Need Your Lovin’ and 1959, always etched in his memory due to the death of his father and linked to Sarah Vaughan‘s big hit ‘Broken Hearted Melody’. For Mossy her songs were reminders of her first trip to Melbourne, starting a teaching degree, traveling to Darwin and other incidents. her most memorable songs were ‘Revolution’ by The Beatles, ‘What A Fool Believes’ by the Doobie Bros and ‘Don’t Pull Your Love’ from Hamilton, Joe F and Reynolds.

  • Lucky Dip
This week Rob and Mossy have dipped into their vast collections and produced some gems. Rob proves that his ‘blind’ spot in the 70s and 80s wasn’t quite as dim as it seemed. He discovered Rod Stewart‘s wonderful album ‘Atlantic Crossing’ and features the poignant ‘I Don’t Want To Talk About It’ from that album. He also became enthused by Style Council‘s funky ‘The Big Boss Groove’ and discovered a lovely song from David Essex (A Winter’s Tale’). Starting the program is the ‘delicious’ ‘Good Morning How Are You?’ from Aussie trio The Moir Sisters. Mossy waxes enthusiastically about Aussie band Sherbet ‘Can You Feel It?’ and Joan Armatrading‘s ‘Drop The Pilot’. She includes two famous Aussie ex pats – Kylie with her early hit ‘I Should Be So Lucky’ and Peter Allen‘s ‘I Go To Rio’. The program ends with two legends, Buddy Holly (True Love Ways) and Cliff Richard (Congratulations).

  • Girt By Sea
In 1984 Australia voted ‘Advance Australia Fair’ to be our national anthem. This year (2021) some changes were made to the lyrics to better reflect our times and to include First Australians. In particular the opening line is now ‘Australians all let us rejoice/For we are one and free’. However, the line ‘Our home is girt by sea’ remains as an anachronism because of the presence of the archaic word ‘girt’. Today’s program once again highlights some unique Aussie talent. The opening song is our own acclaimed punk band The Saints (I’m Stranded).
Other songs feature well known singers Olivia Newton-John (Banks Of The Ohio), Helen Reddy (Delta Dawn) and the Masters Apprentices with their classic ‘Because I Love You’. Included too are Cold Chisel (Standing on the Outside) and Richard Clapton (Girls On The Avenue). An oddity is the inclusion of American singer Jimmie Rodgers’ version of our own ‘Waltzing Matilda’.
