“She does like all kinds of clothing. She does like skirts, I always wore a knitted skirt when I was a child. And they had different colors, and there are like Christmas themed ones, and she always does bikinis, which I find a little weird.”

“But that’s cool. You know, so I once saw in Guatemala they have crocheted bikinis.”

“Yeah. They are natural fibers. Some people are allergic to the plastic-y fabric, so they’re perfect. My mother wore them when she was a child. There were five kids, so they had a lot of clothing, and my grandma knitted like crazy, and all the girls were wearing their knitted bikinis, and they always looked so cute, because they had flowers and different things and were so cute.”

“But did they go into the water with them?”

“Yeah, because they were perfect for children, children grow so fast. 

And because she was a fast knitter, she kept up with time."

“Those are handmade from my grandma, and she always does them for Christmas. And you are a person who’s always cold, so you need something warm, and they keep you crazy warm.”

“It’s so finely stitched.”

“She’s like turning 90 in a few years, I think she’s 87 or something like that, so she’s quite old, and she still does it - she knits a pair a day.”

“A pair a day”?

“She’s so extremely fast with it.”

“Oh my goodness, wow. This would take me, like maybe 2 years.”

“I can’t knit. My grandma tried to teach it to me multiple times.”

“My whole childhood, she was like, ‘you need to knit’

I don’t understand the concept of it, I can’t do it. And she’s like, ‘it’s so easy,’ “

“I think this is one of the hardest things to knit, because I only know how to knit a scarf.“

“She does like all kinds of clothing.”

Here is a recap of the last part of the story. 回顧一下我們上次講的故事:

"Or he could have put it in a pot,"

"With earth? Dirt? Yeah, he could have, but it didn’t have the staying power, it would have just fallen."

It was really ugly. One side was very pretty, the other side was not  existing, it was not there. He put it against the wall, so you can’t see  the other side. And he was like, “you don’t want me to turn it around. It looks awful.”

He girlfriend was like, “yeah, I just scooched it against the wall, I don’t want to see it.”

"But did they have nice ornaments on top?"

"Yeah, but the Christmas tree is like the size of a 2 year old child, so it's like this small"

"It’s cute-sized, it’s very New York apartment, one-bedroom sized."

“Studio sized”

“Yeah”

Our word today is "Scooch" = move a little bit, move slightly

We always have trees here, and some people tend to buy real ones, and we talked about the trees staying fresh or alive, because normally you can buy these wooden crosses where you stick the tree in. And a friend a mine bought a Christmas tree, which was really small and not very pretty and he paid 20 euros for it, and then he wanted to buy the cross, and the cross was 15 euros, and he was like, "the pricing does not sound reasonable, that does not sound OK," and then he said, "I need to build it myself." 

And he spent 2 hours on building the cross, and then he was like, "I’m never going to do it again!"

Here is the original text from the New York Times:

Fun fact: It didn’t start out as a Thanksgiving parade at all, but as a stunt to jump start the 1924 Christmas shopping season (and to edge out the rowdy Ragamuffin Day parade). That year, the floats were accompanied by store employees and animals borrowed from the Central Park Zoo. The organizers quickly realized that marching tired elephants and tigers through Midtown just wouldn’t fly, but big balloons might. And for a dozen parades or so the balloons were released into the air over Manhattan, with a return address label that promised a $100 bounty for their return. Mayhem ensued, so that got nixed, too.

My 4-step process of getting a perfect score on the oral exam:

1. Write down what you want to say - 寫下你想說的話

2. Record the line - 錄下你寫的話

3. EARS ONLY: Repeat listening - 重複聽

4. Shadowing: repeat out loud after the recording - 大聲重複錄音內容

In our last session, we already said that directional words are very important!

表示地方、地点、位置的詞非常重要!

We talked about multiple entrances and exits last time, 

Instead of asking, “where is the door?” It would be better to ask:

與其問門在哪裡，不如問：

Elevator: 電梯

Service elevator: 服務電梯

Escalator: 自動扶梯

Confusing floors 令人困惑的”一樓”：

Ground floor, ground level = Street level

First floor is sometimes the ground floor, but sometimes, it’s a floor above the ground floor. 

一樓有時是一樓，但有時是一樓樓上的樓層。

And the floor below ground floor? That would be the basement 地下室 or underground. 

Basement/Underground

For houses, it would be “basement”, for larger buildings, it would be “underground”. 

If there isn’t an elevator in the building, then it’s a walk-up. 

如果大樓裡沒有電梯，那麼這棟樓就叫”walk-up”.
