In our last session, Jialun and I had a moment over “participation” vs “attendance”. Jialun shared that he often wondered, 老師到底在做什麼筆記？Well, mystery solved！They’re marking your participation in class! 

To re-cap (重述),  please do not interpret one as the other! 請不要把 participation 理解為 attendance！Because they mean very different things, especially within the context of going to school in the West. Participation 和 Attendance 在中文裡都是類似的詞，但是在西方，它們的意思卻截然不同!

如果你在海外上學的話，可千萬別小看 participation marks！大膽開口發言！因為老師在打分哦！

Usually, at the beginning of the school year, teachers will give out a rubric or a syllabus, to show you how grades/marks are calculated for the term. Here, they will indicate whether participation weighs on your grades, and how much. 通常，在學年開始時，教師會發布一份評分細則或教學大綱，以說明該學期的成績/分數是如何計算的。在這裡，他們會指出 participation 是否會對你的成績產生影響，以及影響有多大 (5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, etc.)。

Today, Jialun shares his experience of being Sophomore （大學二年級）in college in New York!

He’s had to take ESL （English as a Second Language), as part of the requirements, 這是一門必修課，but he says the course 「不適合他，中國人需要的東西、想學的、ESL 不教，ESL 教的不是中國人需要的。」

Learning any language requires practice in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

But for Jialun, who's going through his second year of studies in college, these categories weren’t evenly practiced or applied. There was a heavy emphasis on reading and writing, but not listening nor speaking. Which... is the problem we discuss today. 

開口說很重要，表面上是練習語言，實際上是鍛煉心理和自信😎。可是怕耽誤課上的進程，佳倫並沒有踴躍的參與課上討論。這種好心可是會傷到自己的分數啊！

We talked about why he doesn’t participate often in class discussions, and how this could be detrimental to his grades. 

Have you heard about participation grades? If you’re studying in the West, this is super important!
