* colloquialism = 俗話

Last time, we talked about the phrase, "to put up with someone", which means, to deal with someone - usually annoying/frustrating. 上次，我們談到了這個短語，"to put up with someone" - 忍受某某。

In this scene, Constance asks the President, how he puts up with someone, to which he responds, " He used to run NASA. He knows where all the bones are buried. Comes in handy." 在這一幕中，康斯坦斯問總統，他如何忍受某某，他回答說：“他曾經管理過美國宇航局。他知道所有骨頭都埋在哪裡。非常有用。”

Today, we continue to touch upon some colloquialism!

* colloquialism = 俗話

In our last session, we talked about "let's not jump the gun". To jump the gun = 操之過急, which has its origins from sports. 這句話來自於體育運動。Some translation tools will translate this into, "one step ahead", but they don't exactly mean the same thing. 一些翻譯程序會將其翻譯為“領先一步”，但它們的含義並不完全相同。

The origin of the idiom "jump the gun" traces back to early 1900s track and field races, where a gun is fired to signal the start of a race. A runner who begins running before the race has been started has "jumped the gun". "To jump the gun" 的起源可以追溯到 1900 年代早期的田徑比賽，鳴槍表示比賽開始。在比賽開始之前就開始跑步的跑步者“操之過急”。

On a note relevant to "running", we also talk about "to run a story".

Another common expression in casual conversation that school will not teach us 一句學校不會教的話:

= Let’s not put the cart before the horse = 我們不要本末倒置。

* Always pay attention to our verbs and adjectives when we are translating.

* Most of the miscommunications come from different choices in verbs and adjectives 大部分的溝通錯誤來自於動詞和形容詞的不同選擇。這不僅僅是詞彙的問題, 這是一種不同的思維方式。


Run, as a verb, depending on context, can have many meanings. Run, 作為動詞, 取決於上下文有多種含義：

To run a test, or to run something, means to do a test, to do something.

If someone is easily impressed, it means he/she is impressed by almost everything.

如果一個人很容易被 impressed，這意味著他/她認為幾乎所有事情都很了不起。

The opposite would be "hard to please", or "never impressed". 相反的是“難以取悅”。

Attention 注意誤解區在此:

Impressed = adj. 不是印象深刻! 如果某人 「is impressed」則表示他/她正在感受或表現出對某人或某事的欽佩或尊重。If someone is impressed, it means he/she is feeling or showing ⁠⁠admiration⁠⁠ or respect for someone or something.

In a phrase:

If someone is impressed by money, 是在形容某人拜金.

Impressed by _____, means ______ is highly valued/regarded. 我們認為____ 是非常有價值的。

If something or someone is impressive, it would also likely be memorable, but these are two separate words, used to describe different things and feelings. 如果某件事或某人了不起，這很可能令人印象深刻，但這是兩個不同的詞，用於描述不同的感受。

Whatever we are impressed by, 無論我們對什麼感覺 " Wow!", it reveals something about us 這顯示了我們的價值觀, what we think is highly valuable, and so, of course, this differs person to person. 所以，當然，這因人而異。
