Last weekend, the organizers of a TEDx talk at S’pore Poly (SP) advised one of the speakers, local DJ Joshua Simon, to edit out references to LGBT themes which “might be sensitive”. He ended up cancelling his talk, pointing his fingers at SP, who pointed at MOE, who pointed at...SP. Sheesh. Who was wrong? Who was right? Elsewhere, a Korean ice cream ad for Baskin-Robbins that showed an 11-year-old girl eating ice cream (and only that) was deemed to “sexual”. It was pulled off, and Baskin-Robbins issued an apology. Why? Or why not? Should kids even be in ads? Or does milk and ice cream mean different things in different cultures?
