Yosef’s additional two years in prison were not only a consequence of misplaced reliance, but a preparation to master the world of shinui—change—enabling him to interpret Pharaoh’s doubled dreams and guide an entire empire through famine. Reb Noson teaches that dreams reflect the Chamber of Exchanges, where truth and falsehood are mixed, and only a true tzaddik can sift out clarity. Yosef’s compassion, foresight, and simcha allow him not only to interpret dreams but to offer practical guidance that saves lives. His insistence on circumcision in Egypt represents removing the coverings that block truth and morality, preparing the way for the Jewish people’s future exile and redemption. Yosef’s role, joined with Yaakov’s foundation of Torah Emet, teaches that joy is the key to extraction—transforming darkness into light. This is why Parshat Miketz so often coincides with Chanukah: both reveal how simcha and the guidance of true tzaddikim illuminate even the deepest concealment and bring hope, meaning, and redemption.
