My first Ben Bova book, and I loved it

What made the experience of listening to Orion and the Conqueror the most enjoyable?

I like how Stefan Rudnicki personalizes the aditude of the characters in the novels he reads, I have heard a few books that had a good story but the narrator was so flat I couldn't listen to the book, or others who change volume so much that I'm fighting with the volume control too much to enjoy the story

What other book might you compare Orion and the Conqueror to and why?

I don't know, this title seems to be in a new category for me, the only other one I can think that it might compare to is "Enchanted" by Orson Scott Card,

He is much better at personalizing charators than I am in my own mind

The author has a rapier wit and very compelling characters in every book of this series! The narrator is very impressive and executes the emotions of Harrison's world with gusto! This book and almost every other I've read in the stainless steel rat series, always leave me smiling!

read many years ago. enjoyed again and will continue with redt of this series. harrison is great.

Disappointing

I've long enjoyed tales of the Stainless Steel Rat, but this book just disappointed me all around. Our rat is almost unrecognizable -- no larceny, no cons, no jobs for the Special Branch, not even any real cleverness. The overarching plot that is supposed to tie the book together is the problem of relocating his bumpkin relatives and their porcine herd. Along the way they visit a pair of planets, which have vaguely interesting setups that could have led to an entire book earlier, but are now dealt with perfunctorily. I should have been warned off by the fact that the first part of the book, Jim's biggest worry is his dwindling bank balance. C'mon, the old rat never worried about money -- he just robbed a bank when he needed more. Nothing in this book required the SSR, and, in truth, he never appeared in more than name. Perhaps his years on the right side of the law have really made him soft.

Of course, the narration didn't help either. The narrator demonstrated a good range of voices, and I'm sure he is a fine narrator for other books, but for some reason, he did Jim's voice in Adam West style mock seriousness, which did nothing for the characterization of our favorite hardened criminal.

Scubadiving... in space.

The overall story and naration was quite good, I like the retrieval artist novels so took a chance. The characters are nice and if you're looking for some adventure you'll find it.

What makes me stop at three out of five is the weird choice of driving part of the plot with very advanced interstellar and then limiting 'dives' by running out of air in 60 minutes. Even today's EVAs on ISS and Shuttle missions last for 7 or 8 hours. All in all, it feels like the book was written while learning to scuba dive.

Enjoyable nonetheless, recommended.

NOT Clive Cussler in Space

It's best to explain what this book (really 3 short stories/novellas) is -not-, before discussing what it is. As my review title states, don't buy this if what you really want is a Clive Cussler-style space-diving, treasure-hunting adventure. You won't be satisfied at all. The story wasn't a bit what I expected either, but I ended up liking it for the character study it is.

The book's title is somewhat allegorical. The ultimate "Wreck" you end up diving into is actually the protagonist herself, who is revealed slowly (sometimes maddeningly slowly) through the forced first-person perspective.

DIMINISHED EXPECTATIONS

IT COULD END AT ANYTIME

Well, that is what you keep telling yourself and hoping. I became a fan of Wilson after reading Spin. I also liked Mysterium. He has also written several books I would give four stars to. This book seemed to have little to do with the Science it advertises. It is instead another story about divorce. It is heavy on divorce. I listened for over four hours and nothing has happened on the planet they are watching. The aliens are described by those in the book as being very boring. So, why am I reading this. The stuff about the girl with Autism is interesting, but that is not what drew me to the book, nor is it interesting enough for me to care.

Synder has a great narrator voice. He also does well with male voices. When he does female voices it is laughable. He makes all females and kids sound like cartoons.

Great story

Loved the book. So much of what he wrote about is right on target here, where I live. Religion rules the lives of many of these people here, most of which are very uneducated, poor, and having as many as 16 children. The story line keeped me interested through out. Wish I had started with the first in the series.

Be Prepared for the Soap Box

I listened to all four of this series because I love science fiction, but this the forth in the series, Bova is on his own soap box/religion especially regarding population control. It's his his book/story so he can do whatever he wants to, but for me it was bit Over killed and soured the book.

Could not finish it

I listen nearly to the end of the first part, then skipped ahead a couple times and at the end could not finish it. There was not enough science fiction in the story to keep me interested to listen to environmental lectures.

It appears to me that many good authors which are entertaining get to a stage were they feel they have to educate the population about current world problems. Please stick to entertainment that is why we buy fiction.

Excellent story

Would you consider the audio edition of Haze to be better than the print version?

This is one of the first books I have listened to prior to reading. I do not feel I missed anything.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The main character, Roget, is my favorite character. It shows a person willing to look at all sides of a problem while trying to stay true to his responsibilities.

Which character as performed by William Dufris was your favorite?

He did a great job with every character. The tone used to differentiate fell true to what I perceived the character to be like.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. I listen while commuting. I found myself waiting in the car at times not wanting to drag myself away from the story.

Well worth the time and money for a story well told.

Great views of alternate governing styles in Space

Performance was mono tone but I really enjoyed the overall story. By the end I wanted to move to Haze. The wonderful imagination of L. E Modesitt, Jr. will take you on a ride through the galaxy to a mysterious "alien" planet where you will learn of a far superior culture and civilization.

Different from Other Retrieval Artist Novels

This is another exciting novel in the Retrieval Artist series, and I was definite in my 5-star rating. This novel is, however, quite different from the others. First, this one reads much more like a typical detective/thriller novel than a sci-fi novel. Advanced technology definitely plays a role, but I did enjoy Rusch's characterization of alien races in the other books. That is absent in this one. Of course, that this book is even more character-driven than the others can certainly not be considered a fault. But there are no aliens, and Miles does not take a single case as a Retrieval Artist; in fact the concept of the retrieval artist is almost absent from this book.

This book focuses entirely on Miles and Talia and WSX. You really need to have read Recovery Man to have any idea of what is going on in this book. I'd even recommend that you make sure you've read Paloma as well. This is almost just a continuation of the previous book. At the end of the 6th novel, it was clear that some loose ends would have to be tied up, and this novel does that-- and very well.

Jay Snyder again does a fantastic job of characterizing the voices and creating just the right mood for each scene. I started out reading these books to myself, but after I heard Snyder read one, I have only wanted the Audiobook version. His narration heightens the excitement in this already very exciting book.

My only concern is that the ending left me wondering if Rusch is planning on this being the last book in the Retrieval Artist series. I certainly hope not!

Very Good

As has been the case with the past books this is still a pretty great story. I would say on the plus side the story moves very quickly even compared to past books. Flint's daughter continues to develops as a character and the rest of the returning cast stays interesting. More and more Nyquist seems to take a bigger and bigger focus, which seems to work.

On the negative side, and the reason I cut a star is the dramatic turn of events for two pivital characters. Both seem to be wasted particularly in regards to their development from previous books.

The narrator continues to perform excellently. I am listening to him right now in another story and am amazed at how it is a completely unique performance. He really adds to the entertainment value of the book.

Overall a great and enjoyable story, if you liked the others you will like this one as much or more.

Great 4th Book!

I got hooked on Coyote from the first book. Each book is well written and has

Great narration. The Narration can make or brake a book. Allen keep writing!

Good Story, Not the greatest Narrator...

I wouldn't miss out on the story. I will continue the series. My only complaint is the Peter can sound a bit droll at times. I love some of the character portrayals and struggle with others, he's a mixed bag as far as narration goes. Gabrielle does a good job with Wendy's perspective as usual.

If you have listened this far you should listen to this next installment. It ties the story up nicely, and leave it open for the next trilogy and the new challenges for humanity in space.

Political SciFi

An interesting presentation of current problems set in the future and attempts not to repeat history. It holds the reading listener's attention.

Better narration, same narrator

All the Allen Steele books are hard to finish due to the narrator. Peter Ganim does a better job in this book, but he still speaks in a monotone that is hard to overcome.

Another interesting read

The story, while engrossing, is only a bridge, between the books before, and the books to ensue. Of course, that makes it a necessity...

A most enjoyable listen

As is Voyager I & II, Voyagers III is a most enjoyable listen. The whole series flows together well and Ben Bova has left an opening for the next star journey. The story is riveting and kept me company whenever I shovelled snow, did some gardening or just chilled out in the Jacuzzi. I am looking forward to Voyagers IV, whenever it comes out. There is always more snow coming and gardening to do, and relaxing baths to take.

Very entertaining. It does give you a perspective on humanity 's desire to have power and control and what we could do with it if it were focused to do good.

Did Stefan Rudnicki do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Yes. I think he is a wonderful narrator.

You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I didn't get into it far enough to find out. I was so bored.

Brilliant Book, Highly Prescient thinker

If you could sum up Voyagers III in three words, what would they be?

Cool adventure story.

What did you like best about this story?

The idea's seem most prescient, and forward thinking for the near future.

What about Stefan Rudnickis performance did you like?

All, I can say is WOW! This guy has such tremendous range! What a joy to listen too. As an Actor, this Guy is a National Tresure!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yeah, but who has twelve hours to listen to a book in one sitting.

Having read or listened to at least 15 of Bova's books, I must say Bova is truly a distinctive writer. Most sci-fi writers cocentrate on the far flung future, while Ben Bova writes about fantastic things in the near future. The first book I read of Ben Bova's was

A bad book by a good writer

If Ben Bova wasn't a competent writer, I would say that this novel was a waste of my time. His storytelling saved it from being on my all time worst list. Ayn Rand already wrote Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead. Add in some George Orwell and Larry Niven with a touch of "Heart of Darkness" and you get this rehash of stale Science Fiction ideas. Even though I disliked this novel, I did care about the characters, and I had to finish it to see how it turned out. Voyagers II and III would have been better short stories.
