    Publisher's Summary:
The deepest currents of passion seldom break the surface of literature. Romantic classics abound; but however skilled a writer may be in verbalising an emotional experience, he cannot publicly evoke the heat of blood, the yearning of soul, bared in perfect intimacy between two beings. But letters can do this, and songs never meant to be sung by any but the lover, or the beloved. Greatest amongst these is the Song of Songs, set to no known music, and for no religious reason incorporated into the Old Testament. Historically, this Song of Solomon is thought to be an ancient wedding idyll, transmitted to us in a rather fragmentary form.

Madame Bovary is a compelling portrayal of the intensity of human passion, a characteristic that is Emma's greatest attribute, yet one which ultimately leads to tragedy.

    Madame Bovary
While initially I found the book difficult for engagement, I learned, about 3/4 of the way through, that this is a book with much to be appreciated. The characters appear flat and trivial, stereotypical, really, but this is purposeful. The characters represent ideas or modes of thought rather than human beings. Madame Bovary is Romanticism, Homais is Enlightenment, and Charles, while in many ways the most flat in regards to opinions and passions, actually appears to be the most human without an undying subscription to any one idea. If anything, Charles is the picture of naive love for Madame Bovary. So, the book has a layer beyond the plot, the battle between Romanticism and Enlightenment, and Flaubert's journey with this is intriguing and telling. Finally, Flaubert is a master of syntax and vocabulary. The sentences alone are enough to appreciate this book. Flaubert truly mastered art for art's sake. I believe he did himself proud.
finds her life boring and her relationship unfulfilling and seeks fulfillment in both ...
I mainly picked this book because I had seen references to the story and especially to Emma Bovary in other works so I wanted to familiarize myself with the story. It's an older work but the themes resonate today...the young woman who marries for the wrong reasons, finds her life boring and her relationship unfulfilling and seeks fulfillment in both spending beyond her and her husband's means and in extramarital affairs. And there's the mother-in-law who never really approves of her, the sleazy self-aggrandizing apothecary with whom her husband, Dr. Charles Bovary, characterized as a somewhat plodding, unimaginative fellow, spends much time, apparently oblivious to his wife's desperation. I felt it was a book that deals with the effect relationships and expectations influence the direction people take in life including, and perhaps especially, the unfortunate choices people make.
    a classic French soap opera
I love French classics because they are so expressive and alive. This is my first Flaubert classic. Like his great contemporaries, Hugo, Dumas, Maupassant, Flauber's Madam Bovary is a magnificent French soap opera written with great style. His exquisite choice of words and style is reminiscent of one sitting down to a 10 course French cuisine. Course after course of delicious dishes to keep us engrossed in rural France life in the 18th century when horse drawn carts were cabs and conveniences for impulsive acts passions. Emma Bovary, like all of us who are made of flesh and blood and desire passion, fell prey to concupiscence. But it was his careless extravagance and bad financial management that eventually destroyed her. But which one us is devoid of fleshy lusts? Some of us, however, are thankfully rational enough to avoid harming our close ones by being discreet when tasting the forbidden fruit. There is sadness at the end with Charles died of a broken heart after discovering his dead Emma's protracted infidelity.

"Dostoyevsky reveals extraordinary powers of character analysis, considers profound religious and political ideas, and develops the Russian novel, both through the use of urban settings and his gift for narrative tension." (The Concise Oxford Companion to English Literature)

    Get Ready
The two popular translations of âCrime and Punishmentâ before the 1993 translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, were by Constance Garnett and David McDuff. The Pevear/Volokhonsky translation became my favourite â until Oliver Readyâs translation came along. Not knowing a word of Russian, I declare my favourite only by the enjoyment I derived from reading the book in English.
Many things may indeed be lost in translation, and many others get misrepresented but we may not know. The result of reading only the English versions is that oneâs choice is largely subjective. Compared to the Garnett version, the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation seems very modern â until Readyâs came along. Little things like changing âhad notâ to âhadnâtâ renders Readyâs version not only a little more modern but also more informal. That is not to say that the atmosphere of old Russia is lost. Ready uses âfibsâ for âliesâ (Pevear/Volokhonsky) in one passage.
Ultimately, the reader has to decide for himself which style he enjoys more. Here is a comparison from one of my favourite passages (there are many) from the book. I set out first the Pevear/Volokhonsky version then the Ready version:
âWhat do you think?â Razmumikhin shouted, raising his voice even more. âYou think itâs because theyâre lying? Nonsense! I like it when people lie! Lying is manâs only privilege over all other organisms. If you lie- you get to the truth! Lying is what makes me a man. Not one truth has ever been reached without lying fourteen times or so, maybe a hundred and fourteen, and thatâs honourable in its way; well, but we canât even lie with our minds! Lie to me, but in your own way, and Iâll kiss you for it. Lying in oneâs own way is almost better than telling the truth in someone elseâs way; in the first case youâre a man, and in the second â no better than a bird. The truth wonât go away, but life can be nailed shut; there are examples. (Pevear/Volokhonsky)
âNow what are you thinking?â cried Razumikhin, raising even more. âThat itâs their lies I canât stand? Nonsense! I like it when people lie. Telling lies is humanityâs sole privilege over other organism. Keep fibbing and youâll end up with the truth! Iâm only human because I lie. No truthâs ever been discovered without fourteen fibs along the way, if not one hundred and fourteen, and thereâs honour in that. But our lies arenât even our own! Lie to me by all means, but make sure itâs your own, and then Iâll kiss you.

    Worth a listen
The stories told in this audiobook are different than other erotica I have read or to which I have listened. Not your typical Penthouse letters, which can get repetitive and predictable. While I did not find all of the stories erotic, they did keep my attention because they were well told and different.
    Erotic Feast
Nourishment for the erotic imagination is hard to find. What commonly passes for the expression of sexuality is so narrow in its range--lacking for example women's voices--that instead of feeding the erotic imagination, it starves it. This collection, on the other hand, is a cornucopia. The stories portray a broad range of sexual expression with a richness and spice that made me dang horny.
The characters and story lines, by going beyond the usual confines (regarding, for instance, age, class, and heritage), sometimes tantalize and disturb, often titillate, and sometimes all of these at once. I loved letting my erotic mind wander to the places envisioned by each unique writer. By vsiting these places, safely in the imagination, land of infinite possibilities, I expanded my understanding of the erotic and of myself, and got an erotic feast that left me with the delicious taste of forbidden fruit.
    The Best American Erotica 2006
I think most women would appreciate the story details in this audio book and the people who read the them. I really didn't care to much for this audio book. I guess for me there was way too much other than hetrosexual stories for my liking. I found myself not interested or a little bored with most of the stories. If you like a big mix of erotic stories then the book may be for you. If you don't like other than hetrosexual stories then I would suggest looking elsewhere.
    hit just the right spot
Not every story was my kind of erotica, but there were many that were amazing and hit just the right spot. I plan to buy more from this series.
    Not my thing
I did not enjoy this type of erotica. It was not erotic to me but rather close to being deviant. Be wary.
