I enjoyed the family dynamics with the mother aging and still seeing her daughter as she was years ago.

Everything is too...

I have mixed feelings about this book. It is the story of a family torn apart by an infidelity from the past.

Before the indiscretion comes to light, the family is portrayed too much like Donna Reads TV family or Leave it to Beaver. The family was too gooey sweet. Too perfect Then Claire, the mother, becomes a little too melodramatic when she finds out about the infidelity.

It is just an "okay" book but not as good as Spencers other books.

No. Whilst I enjoyed the book and LaVyrle is a good writer I did not like her narration of the story. Her voice work on the teenage characters was poor and was very whining.

Predictable Plot-Irritating Narration

My first Audible Eileen Goudge-This book would have been better read to myself...There were very irritating "asides to self" sounding like they were recorded in a telephone booth..constantly, by everybody and I finally got to the point where I couldn't listen any longer

I haven't looked but I assume this is an older novel and recording and it hasn't held up well.

The plot is easily predicted, from the first couple of hours...I went to the end to see if I was right and yep-I was.

Uninteresting, predictable and poorly narrated..this is going back.

I love secrets

I enjoyed this listen. It went up and down and back and forth; kind of mindless but absorbing enough to give me something other than normal life to think about for a while. Eileen Goudge is very good at this sort of story.

Worthy Sequel to Beau Stedman Chronicle

I found Veron's second work to be equally as captivating, entertaining and believable as the first.

Taking right off where the previous novel left off, a young attorney now working within Bobby Jones' law firm receives mysterious communications from one who eventually identifies himself as Moonlight.

Turns out this is a connection to Augusta and Jones and Roberts and Pebble Beach and Stedman, and even W.C. Fields.

I have no problems as others with a hidden course being a possibility. It fits perfectly with Jones' desire for privacy and Roberts' power. Perfect place, on a military base, on ocean frontage. Easily could be preserved by the games' best as their own private refuge.

The author's style is very comfortable, yet classy. No foul language which litters much of the other golf fiction and leaves a foul taste in my mouth even for well written golf plots otherwise.

Besides a great read, there is I believe very good golf philosophy handed out, e.g. "Ya' see, lad, it's not 'bout how ya' swing, but whre ya' put the ball. That's what made Mr. Jones so great. Ya' never heard anyone say that a particular course favored Mr. Jones or was well-suited for his game. He studied every course he played to figure out the best way to play each hole. Mr. Hogan was the same way."

An Incredible Story

Charley Hunter, who uncovered Beau Stedman in "The Greatest Player Who Never Lived" is back and this time he hooks up with Moonlight McIntyre, an old caddie from Augusta National so Charley can tell the story of a secret golf course that was built by none other than the legendary golfer Bobby Jones. This book is fascinating in that you virtually go with Charley and Moonlight to find this golf course and experience the magic of the course as if you were there.

brilliant

I loved this book. Written before her Bridget Jones books, it definitely has a more serious tone - the subject matter being famine and politics in Africa and the hypocritical, self-absorbed behavior of the rich and famous. Yet the book still has plenty of her signature humor and despite the heaviness of the subject at times is still essentially an enjoyable read. And it made me laugh out loud which I don't often do when I read (listen) even if I am amused by a book. I understand she has written a new book - something about a spy - and I hope that it too will make it to Audible.

Gripping

The narrator was fantastic! The story gripping and realistic. Even with only a few minutes to listen to it once a week, I really looked forward to my "reading" time.

Book good. . .narrator questionable

I liked this book. I wish the first was on audible unabridged. The narrator, however, didn't emphasize the right word sometimes and was a little hokey in the accents. But the book was enjoyable none the less. 4 star book minus one for the narrator

Too complex for an audio book

I have greatly enjoyed other audio books by this author, but found the early part of this book far too complicated, with many characters and frequent switches in time with no cues for the listener to recognize which era we were in. It's a pity, because in the end is was a good story marred only by too much time spent detailing the rules and playing out of a secret society, Emor (=Rome backwards) that involved the main characters when young.

Deeply moving

This is a beautifully realised and moving story. Wonderfully written and read, it held me gripped throughout. I was not familiar with Paul Torday and having experienced 'Wilberforce' am now being amused by "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen".

The story of the Wilberforce (and you do get to find out his first name) tells of the slide into madness and the deceit of addiction. Paul Torday writes with command and confidence and his descriptive prose at times is mesmerising. Highly recommended.

Very, very good.

I bought this on a whim, having never heard of the book or the author before - I just like David Rintoul as a narrator. It turned out to be a fantastic story - lots of twists and turns, an interesting approach to 'revealing' both elements of the story and the character of the protagonist, good writing, and good reading. (I don't want to spoil it for you by saying much about the plot.) My only quibble, and it's a small one, is that I would have liked a little more closure at the end - I was left thinking, "Okay, but what happened NEXT?" But overall highly recommended.

Paul Tourday

The Irresistible Inheritance of Wilberforce kept me interested throughout. The reverse sequence plot was somewhat disconcerting as you knew the end and could only listened for the way the end was reached.

Extraordinary story

Not all is "light & happiness" in this story, but the main character is extremely well constructed & throughout the story we get inklings that help us understand him. It is superbly crafted, a wonderful read. It's definitely "hard to put down".

Starting this book you have no idea where it's going to go. That said, it is one of those stories that begins at the end...and ends at the beginning.

A little way into the book we begin to grasp what's going on for Wilberforce & how this part of his story will end. He's a character to love, with all of his failings.

If you've read & enjoyed "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" you will know & appreciate Paul Torday's wonderful way with a story. This story is not in the same theme, but his brilliant narrative style is expressed just as clearly.

Nothing quite like it

A challenging read as you're stuck in the mixed-up head of a very unsympathetic protagonist. We actively join Wilberforce as he descends the slippery slope and it's a fascinating glimpse into an addictive mindset.

Early Lethem

If you like the way Lethem's mind works, this book is a look at the way it worked in a more formative stage. It's not a rich, mature work like Chronic City. But it has the wordplay and ideaplay of his later work, in a simpler world, an exploration of something vs. nothing, the nature of reality, and love that doesn't really work.

Title notwithstanding, there's no satisfying carnality in the book.

For someone wanting to try Lethem, I'd recommend starting with Chronic City instead of this. CC is nonstop brilliance, inventive in a way that I'd compare with Humboldt's Gift, though ultimately less literary but more crazy in a good way.

Intriguing book

A definite for time traveler or sci-fi fans. I really enjoyed this book, can't wait to see if he writes some more along this line. The ending was great!!!

Contender: Most Punchable Protagonist of the Year

I found this book through the Lab Lit List, which tried to collect novels which depict science and scientists as they actually are.

The narrator of this book is the partner of a physicist at the center of a major discovery. He is, as a character, infuriatingly self-centered. He demands his partner's undivided attention, and insists loudly that she and her colleagues give equal consideration to linguistics and critical theory as a means to understanding particle physics.

In a book featuring a sentient miniature black hole, my suspension of disbelief was ultimately broken by the notion that a practicing physicist would be engaged to such an unlovable ass.

Odd little book

I didn't hate this, but I didn't love it either. At least I wanted to finish it to find out how it concluded. Someone recommended the book to me and I probably should have done more research before buying it,as I'm not generally a fan of Sci-Fi.

This is a collection of short stories, each more banal and trite than the last. Most of the stories I didn't care about the characters and was glad it was short, in others, if I did manage to care about the story it would end suddenly in a poor attempt at a poetic, abstract finish. The language is repetitive, the narration obvious and distracting. It was bad. I ended up finishing the whole thing, it got worse as it went along. Any single story would have been tolerable, but story after story of an almost identical rhythm and theme and style got very old.

Unique thought-provoking stories

What other book might you compare The Secrets of a Fire King to and why?

I would not compare The Secrets of a Fire King to any other short story collection except perhaps Kate Atkinson's It's Not the End of the World, which I keep returning to again and again. Edwards' unique collection of stories begs to be revisited (in my case, listened to again). Each story is a universe--often based on at least one of the ancient Four Elements: Fire, Water, Air, Wind. I don't know if this is intentional, but it causes a linkage of themes in a very subtle way. Here the writing style of author Kim Edwards greatly exceeds The Memory Keeper's Daughter in my opinion. An occasional character do takes another character's face in her hands to make an important statement (a trademark from The Memory Keeper's Daughter). Otherwise, I was literally "blown away" by the creativity of these stories.

What about Bernadette Dunnes performance did you like?

Outstanding performance and timing of transitions from one story to the next. It's really difficult for the reader to end one story and not begin the next. The stories are kept separate in one's mind, but many stories end with a cliff-hanger. Each story begins with a dramatically different character, point of view, setting, and time period. Must have been a challenge to prepare the reading. Great performance, BD!
