    Should have been free
Story way too short for cost to purchase. It could have been offered as freebie.
    What a ripoff!
This "ebook" gives new meaning to SHORT story. The story is a very short portion of the stated time and it only lasts that long because it is read very slowly!
As a long-time Delinsky fan, I am deeply disappointed.

But his fear turns to astonishment when a mysterious stranger, beautiful young Mei Lin, rescues him to serve in the forces of the Heavenly Army. As they fall in love, the two Chinese youths are caught up in the heady Taiping Rebellion and the beginning of The New Age. Suddenly they are separated by a new edict: men and women will no longer live or work together. This award-winning tale is of one of Katherine Patersons best. It was chosen for the American Bookseller Pick of the Lists and the Bank Street Childrens Book of the Year. Set against a backdrop of one of Chinas most dramatic periods of history, it follows these two young soldiers as they are torn between the idealism of a movement seeking to restore the Empire to its peopleand a perilous desire for each other.

    Elegant Prose and Universal Characters
Rebels of the Heavenly Kingdom transports readers into China's Taiping Rebellion in the mid-nineteenth century. Fifteen-year-old Wang Lee is kidnapped from his peasant family and sold into slavery. His new master Mei Li turns out to be an eighteen-year-old woman dressed as a man who immediately sets him free. He chooses instead to join his rescuer's Christian rebel group in its mission to overthrow China's oppressive emperor and spread Christianity throughout the land. Wang Lee moves from ignorance and arrogance toward humility and an acceptance of his own humanity as he trains to become a soldier, experiences the harsh realities of war and struggles to find his way back home.
Katherine Paterson uses elegant prose and a tale of adventure to explore a foreign culture through universal characters whose underlying hopes and aspirations are recognizably our own. The militant Christian group preaches equality regardless of class or gender and abolishes the crippling custom of binding women's feet into dainty, pointed hooves. The rebels are known to be kind to the poor, never stealing or pillaging as they march to battle. However, the group resorts to draconian penalties for every infraction, including any violation of the war-time order for strict separation of the sexes. When Wang Lee's philosopher friend suggests that the enemy soldiers they are killing are no different than themselves, Wang Lee reports this disloyalty and sees his friend beheaded as a traitor.
Wang Lee knows that his friend spoke the truth, though, and struggles with the same questions we still wrestle with today: How can a God of love ordain the killing and destruction that accompanies any war and who can we trust to hear the voice of God better than our own selves? Originally published in 1983, this historical novel belongs in every young-adult library collection.

    Annoying
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The main character was not likable. I really didn't care if he came out a winner or not. He was angry and a whiner. The narrator was good at portraying him however. But I was sorry I bothered with the book.

    Narration
Outstanding narration by Alan Bates. A quiet slow story - I'm glad it was abridged even though my choice is usually for an unabridged version of any book.
    interesting story excellent listen
A well read story, abdridged seamlessly. Occasional background music added to the content of the story rather than intruded. Would definetely recommend this audible book.

    It's OK
I wasn't completely bored with this listen, but I wasn't hungry for it either. This book is a good start for the author, and although I don't regret the purchase, it was soon forgotten. When I REALLY like a book, it remains on my MP3 for months (or years), I erased this one within days of completing it.

    Long, laboured but enjoyable
Would you try another book written by Mary McCarthy or narrated by Lorelei King?
Lorelei King is very good and Mary McCarthy I would try again, but may be as a book rather than an audiobook
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
    In the asylum
Which character as performed by Lorelei King was your favourite?
Probably Kay with Polly running as a close second with Nadene coming a very close third. Although they were quite distinct through her characterisation.
Was The Group worth the listening time?
Yes but you have to stick with it,
    Any additional comments?
This is a complicated story that intertwines the life of a group of girls and how their lives unfold. I am sure that as a physical book it would be easier to follow, especially for those who tend to listen in the car. Frequent breaks make harder to maintain flow and its not that easy to flick back and recap.Historically interesting reinforcing how far we have come over a short period of time. Each character is different with their own story told over a short but interesting period, The only downside with so many characters is that you have to remember who is who and their life and relationship with the next character. This is not a listen for the feint hearted, stick with it and try to listen consistently so that you maintain flow - it is a long book. There are some scenes which will stick with me for a long time so it obviously has some powerful elements and I did enjoy it and will be able to listen again as I am sure there are some bits that passed me by.
A long lost era - fascinating to read
I really enjoyed this quite long story - I felt connected to all the women but I did have to keep reviewing the info as there was a lot to take in.
Worth a listen - we may advance in technology but people remain the same in principle!
Once a trail-blazer, but now seems less so
Though the stories are about a group of women graduates from Vasser College in the 1930s the influence of the1960s, when the book was written, shine through. Some of the frankness, particularly over womens sexual feelings and experiences, were regarded as risqué when the book came out in the 60s but it now seems matter-of-fact. I think it would have had more of an impression on me when I was young. Theres quite a bit about what women expected of life; and the social conventions and child-rearing fashions of the era. The predominance, until relatively recently, of psychoanalysis in American psychiatry is strongly evident and the parts about characters undergoing this treatment were the only boring parts of the book for me.
As other reviewers have mentioned one has to concentrate, particularly in the earlier part of the book, as so many characters are introduced by name and nickname. But once the book got into its stride I became engrossed in the womens lives.

The brilliant new collection of short stories from Man Booker Prize-winning author Julian Barnes.
The stories in Julian Barnes long-awaited third collection are attuned to rhythms and currents: of the body, of love and sex, illness and death, connections and conversations. Each character is bent to a pulse, propelled on by success and loss, by new beginnings and endings.
Ranging from the domestic to the extraordinary, from the vineyards of Italy to the English seaside in winter, the stories in 'Pulse' resonate and spark.

The clean, acidic accuracy of Barness writing is supremely enjoyable (Sunday Telegraph)

    Wonderful Listen
What did you like best about this story?
I enjoyed listening to this audiobook very much. The narrator was perfect for this book and the collection of stories by Julian Barnes was interesting and entertaining. I usually don't read or listen to short stories, but after reading other listeners' opinions, I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did!
    Mixed bag
I have loved everything I read or listened to of Julian Barnes prior to this. Some of the stories are wonderfully insightful and touching and sometimes even funny. However there are 4 segments of the "dinner with friends" that I thought were cringe worthy and depressingly mundane. I think that while the narrative suited the narrator for the rest of the stories, his over-dramatisation of the dinner parties made those segments even worse. I wish I'd just give those segment a pass. Otherwise, enjoyed the listen. Keep writing Julian!

Martin Harris returns home after a short absence to find that his wife doesnt know him, another man is living in his house under his name, and the neighbors think hes a raving lunatic. Worse, not a single person - family, colleague, or doctor - can vouch for him. Worse still, the impostor shares all of Martins memories, experiences, and knowledge, down to the last detail. He is, in fact, a more convincing Martin than Martin himself.
Is it a conspiracy? Amnesia? Is Martin the victim of an elaborate hoax or of his own paranoid delusion?
In his high-powered new novel, Didier van Cauwelaert, the award-winning author of One-Way, explores the illusory nature of identity and the instability of the things we take for granted. Dispossessed of his job, his family, his name, and his very past, Martin Harris is an Everyman caught in an absurd and yet disturbingly convincing nightmare, one that seems to have no exit and that resists every explanation. Part moral fable, part Robert Ludlum-style thriller, Out of My Head is a fast-paced tale of one mans desperate attempt to reclaim his existence - even at the cost of his own life.

Thank goodness for great imaginative story telling. I was hooked in right from the start and just had to keep listening. With the incredibly strong narrative performance this was an absolute treat to listen to!
    Identity Theft Gone Horribly Wrong!
Martin Harris believes he is the victim of identity theft. He awakes after being in a car accident that left him in a coma for a few days. Things are a bit fuzzy for Martin. He remembers who he is; the problem is that someone else thinks they are him also. But who is the actual Martin Harris? How do you prove you are you who you think you are when someone else has all the documentation proving they are you? Since Martins accident happened on the day he and his wife had moved to France, there are no neighbors who can vouch for him. Since he is married, the easiest way would be to ask his wife. When his wife says he is not the real Martin Harris he is left dumbfounded.
Convinced his wife is having an affair and this is just her way of getting back at him for being a lousy husband, Martin continues to try and convince people he is the real Martin Harris. As everything starts rolling in against him, he starts to doubt himself. But if he isnt Martin Harris, then who is he and how did he get all of Martins memories?
I really enjoyed this story. I wasnt sure if Martin was really Martin or there was some really weird scientific experimentation going on with this mans brain.
