interesting subject, but sometimes we get lost
I like the premise of the books, the fact that our main character is an anti hero. But I really don't understand that obsession with not being able to get drunk, after a while it gets boring, the story becomes more predictable and not so enjoyable.

    Publisher's Summary:
Benjamin arrives with his parents for a tour of Roaring Orchards, a therapeutic boarding school tucked away in upstate New York. Suddenly, his parents are gone and Benjamin learns that he is there to stay. Sixteen-years-old, a two-time failed suicide, Benjamin must navigate his way through a new world of popped privileges, candor meetings, morning meds, and cartoon brunches - all run by adults who themselves have yet to really come of age. The only person who comprehends the schools many rules and rituals is Aubrey, the founder and headmaster. Fragile, brilliant, and prone to rage, he is as likely to use his authority to reward students as to punish them. But when Aubrey falls ill, life at the school begins to unravel.
Benjamin has no one to rely on but the other students, especially Tidbit, an intriguing but untrustworthy girl with a self-afflicting personality. More and more, Benjamin thinks about running away from Roaring Orchards - but he feels an equal need to know just what it is he would be leaving behind.

    The New, Non-linear Odyssey
Perhaps this is my personal preference in book choices, but I don't find the minutiae of any story to be very interesting. Yes, such detail adds texture and emotional drama to a written passage, or can add literary descriptive nuance,, but if I am not seeing any purpose to the infinitesimal meanderings I quickly lose interest.
This novel's structure and multiple viewpoints, unusual terminology requiring some sort of invented or specified glossary, is generous fodder for the genre of New York Times reviewers who have been known to embrace breakthrough for its own sake, and from some angles the novel could be viewed, thematically at least, as "Pilgrim's Progress" 2012-style.
Characters? Yes, the cast includes many names and develops vignettes around each character's "plot" arc but that's about all the detail to which the reader has access and the backstories, front-stories, middle-stories are all missing or deemed irrelevant. These people have no context and are just seem to be names, assigned the way a visual artist would select colors and other players, light nuance, texture, etc. for a painting or installation. The viewer reads the whole, and it's usually not linear.
IMO this novel is written in the wrong medium. It should be a painting or collage, installation or site-specific construct, impressionistic and resplendent with textural additives, line arabesques, drink stains and evocative ornamentation. Or it's a photographic slideshow, composed of unconventional and unexpected camera angles.
Perhaps (and "perhaps" an understatement) the traditional novel is dying, images are replacing words, and the art form has now been colonized by microcosmic spider-like explorations. This is all a strong departure from the archetypal hero's journey as set forth in ancient mythology and then later branded by philosopher/cosmologist Joseph Campbell. Such a setup is now looking dated.
I am all for creative breakthrough, but I also know why I read, for many reasons: enlightenment, insight, voyeurism and knowledge of how a character fictional or real gets down from the mythical tree into which he's been placed. And there is just plain old entertainment, to name a few reasons to read.

Nach "Herzenhoeren" nun "Herzenstimmen" - was ...

    Title: The Neruda Case
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: Roberto Ampuero
    Narrator: Robertson Dean
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 47 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-30-12
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 18 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Roberto Ampuero's novels starring the wonderfully roguish Cayetano Brulé are an international sensation. In The Neruda Case, listeners are introduced to Cayetano as he takes on his first case as a private eye. Set against the fraught political world of pre-Pinochet Chile, Castro's Cuba, and perilous behind-the-Wall East Berlin, this mystery spans countries, cultures, and political ideas, and features one of literature's most beloved figures-Pablo Neruda.
Cayetano meets the poet at a party in Chile in the 1970s. The dying Neruda recruits Cayetano to help him solve the last great mystery of his life. As Cayetano fumbles around his first case, finding it hard to embrace the new inspector identity foisted upon him, he begins to learn more about Neruda's hidden agenda. Neruda sends him on a whirlwind expedition around the world, ending back in Chile, where Pinochet's coup plays out against the final revelations of their journey.
Evocative, romantic, and full of intrigue, Ampuero's novel is both a glimpse into the life of Pablo Neruda as death approaches and a political thriller that unfolds during the fiercely convulsive end of an era.
    Critic Reviews:
"[Listen to] this one as much for the story as for the wonderful way Ampuero has with words." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
OK combination of historical fiction & mystery
The rendering of Pablo Neruda is by far the best part of the book. As Ampuero says in the postscript, he aimed to bring El Poeta down to earth, show him for the great but flawed person he was. By all means, go read some Neruda poems when you're done; they'll bring out the Great Man part.
The "mystery", such as it is, is disappointing, just this-happened-then-this-then-this, even as the story goes all over the world. As the Pinochet coup approaches, descriptions of Chile in turmoil are vivid and harrowing, but are over almost as soon as they begin.
I found the reading professional but perfunctory.
Loved the book, loved the audiobook
Would you listen to The Neruda Case again? Why?
I read the first half of The Neruda Case but then a long car ride awaited, so I was very happy to find the audio version available on audible.com. The premise is engaging, and I enjoyed the audio version all the way on my journey home.
What does Robertson Dean bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Great narrator. He does the voices, too, but I mainly appreciated his voice as the regular character .
    Any additional comments?
This is a wonderful story, vividly told, with a wonderful literary premise. It kept my interest from beginning to end. The author is very talented - and this is the first of his many books to be translated into English. I hope some of the others will also be translated now.
    Highly recommended!
A Simple Case of Going Nowhere
A story rich in detail and short on plot. The author shared a descriptive picture of Chile, Cuba and East Germany in the early 1970's. It seemed as if the story was a device to share the description of a world the author knew well and loved. He gave us a glimpse of the political situation at that moment and a superficial biography of Neruda. I liked the narrators voice, calm and reassuring and good to listen to at the end of the day.

A Mind Blowing Exercise in Love!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes
    Any additional comments?
This book opened my mind to some of the joys and heartache of having an autistic child but it was written in such a way, and with such wonderful humour, that I didnt know wether to laugh or cry.The verbal wit of this author is both amazing and brilliant and her way of telling a tale makes you feel that the story is a bio. I believed every word.
    Laugh out loud and cry
Very real description of the experiences of being a mother of a son with autism. Great job writing and the performance was animated and talented.
I just can't read any more of this dreadful book!
For once I didn't read the reviews of a book - I had read "How to kill your husband....." and enjoyed that, so thought I'd give it a go. Big mistake! Like so many others, I found the first part of the book interesting and funny - then the author just seemed to go off on a tangent and lose the plot completely.
It's like she wrote down every one-liner she could think of - the more caustic & nasty the better - and then stuck a bit of dialogue in between to pretend there is a story.
It just got stupider and stupider, Lucy is so angry all the time, no wonder she's exhausted!
I am the mother of two sons who have Autism, and whereas it's true that anger and 'why me (again)' is the first stage of grief when you find out your children are different; you move on, you move towards acceptance and get on with living your lives. Lucy seems to have stayed at the first angry stage for 13 years???? No, you couldn't sustain that kind of emotional state, you'd go mad.
During many years working at a special school and meeting all sorts of children and young adults, I can honestly say I never met anyone who even remotely resembled Merlin - small areas of his behaviors sure, but not all in one child.
But back to the characters: Lucy is so horrible, why would any man want her? Let alone two of them! She's nasty, overbearing, overprotective, shrill and controlling.
Her mother is sensible and has raised the two daughters on her own and given them a good life and education. Now she is enjoying her life and the girls resent her for it.

    Publisher's Summary:
Grange, Florida, is famous for its miracles - the weeping fiberglass Madonna, the Road-Stain Jesus, the stigmata man. And now it has JoLayne Lucks, unlikely winner of the state lottery.
Unfortunately, JoLayne's winning ticket isn't the only one. The other belongs to Bodean Gazzer and his raunchy sidekick, Chub, who believe they're entitled to the whole $28 million jackpot. And they need it quickly, to start their own underground militia before NATO troops invade America.
But JoLayne Lucks has her own plans for the Lotto money - an Eden-like forest in Grange must be saved from strip-malling. When Bode and Chub brutally assault her and steal her ticket, JoLayne vows to track them down, take it back - and get revenge.
The only one who can help is Tom Krome, a big-city investigative journalist now bitterly consigned to writing frothy features for a midsized central Florida newspaper. With a persuasive nudge from JoLayne, Krome is about to become part of a story that's bigger and more bizarre than anything he's ever covered.
Chasing two heavily armed psychopaths down the coast of Florida is reckless enough, but Tom's got other problems - the murderous attention of a jealous judge; an actress wife who turns fugitive to avoid divorce court; an editor who speaks in tongues; and Tom's own growing fondness for the future millionairess with whom he's risking his neck.
The pursuit takes them from the surreal streets of Grange to a buzzard-infested island deep in Florida Bay, where they finally catch up with the fledgling militia - Chub, Bode Gazzer, a newly recruited convenience-store clerk and their baffled hostage, a Hooters waitress.
The climax explodes with the hilarious mayhem that is Carl Hiaasen's hallmark. Lucky You is his funniest, most deliriously gripping novel yet.

    Not My favorite Hiasson Audiobook.
Carl Hiasson is by far my favorite audiobook author. Audiobboks are abit differenr from reading anovel. I read about 3 books a week. I listen to my audiobooks when I walk my dogs everyday and when I houseclean, run errands etc. Audiobooks demand attention. You need to pay attention otherwise you can drift from any story easily. Don't do it with a Hiasson book or yoy'll be missing a truly great story. You must try them all. Very entertaining and laugh out loud books
Great characters, great story, and quite funny too
Where does Lucky You rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I love Carl Hiaasen. His books always have colorful characters that make for a funny adventure. The characters are often simple minded people trying to make the score of their life, but every step of the way they find a way to make the adventure more interesting and funny.
What other book might you compare Lucky You to and why?
It's like an Elmore Leonard novel set in Florida. The comparison is based on the dialog style of writing.
What about Edward Asners performance did you like?
Asner does a pretty good job.

    Members Reviews:
    Difficult journey, Insightful, thought provoking
This book is constructed clearly, flowing easily from the father Paul Allen to his son Daniel recounting their individual stories. This book is set in the USA and I picked it as recommended by Richard and Judy book club.
The narrative was clear and did not distract from the story
Paul is a doctor of Rheumatology who is on his second marriage with 2 young sons. Paul's first marriage produced a son Daniel now aged 20 years. One evening a TV newsflash announces the assassination of a presidential candidate Mr Seagram. Paul learns that his 20-year old son Daniel has been arrested as the assassin.
The story then moves between Paul and Daniel telling their individual stories. Paul tries to understand how his distant but 'normal' son could commit such an act. Daniel's story goes towards the events of the shooting from his unique view.
Paul's journey takes him from denial to conspiracy theories and feelings that Daniel was brainwashed. Paul discusses other notorious assassin's of history like Sirhan Sirhan. I found these very interesting and felt the discussion added greatly to the narrative.
Part of Paul's journey includes dealing with the guilt he has as a parent. He feels the burden of his failure as a father to Daniel and of his abandonment of him following his divorce from his mother Paul wonders to what extent these factors may have contributed to Daniel's actions.
This book pulls deep at human emotions as this could be any father searching for clarity and meaning where no clear answer can be found. Paul eventually reaches acceptance of Daniel while acknowledging that his world will never be the same again.
