A Halloween "Treat" (complete with a few nasty "Tricks")

"The Revengers" is a surprising little gem in Dan Andriacco's highly acclaimed "Sebastian McCabe - Jeff Cody" mystery series. This short story is certain to appeal to both the growing number of "McCabe - Cody" mystery series fans as well as to the many longtime fans of the 1960s "The Avengers" television series (the seasons starring Diana Rigg as Mrs. Peel, of course). Without giving anything of importance away, this short story revolves around the "real" life-threatening misadventures of Jeff Cody and his new bride Lynda Teal as they make their way to a Halloween party in the guise of "The Avengers" John Steed and Mrs. Peel. Lynda makes for a quite compelling Mrs. Peel all the way down to the black leather cat suit occasionally worn by Diana Rigg in the original series; Jeff - a passable, red-haired John Steed. True to form, it is Jeff's brother-in-law, the irrepressible Sebastian McCabe, who pulls it all together in the end. If this short story is your first foray into the world of Sebastian McCabe and Thomas Jefferson Cody, you will receive a brief exposure to the series main characters along with a cleverly executed plot line. However, you will likely find that this story whets your appetite to venture further into the four (thus far) full-length novels in the series which provide much more insight into the highly engaging cast of characters and the town of Erin, Ohio where most (but not all) of the mysteries take place, along with wonderfully complex plots that never fail to challenge and, in my case, stump the reader. "The Revengers" is highly recommended, and if this is your first visit to Erin, Ohio, I strongly suspect that it won't be your last!

Fun Story!

I've read all of Dan Andriacco's Jeff Cody/Sebastian McCabe mysteries and always look forward to the next. This short story featuring these delightful characters is an added treat. Jeff Cody and his lovely wife, Lynda, attend a costume party dressed as my favorite fictional TV characters, John Steed and Mrs. Peel, from the series "The Avengers." Even before they get to the party, they become involved in a true Avengers-style adventure. Andriacco brings his snappy dialogue, fast-paced action, and entertaining characters to this fun story. Check it out for an introduction to his mystery series or simply as an entertaining read on a relaxing afternoon.

Complex and fascinating - loved it

I would recommend this audible book. The author does not dodge issues of racism and interfaith infighting alongside a riveting powerful story that has numerous unexpected twists. New and refreshing. Wasn't sure about the narration at first but soon felt it was an integral part of my enjoyment of this debut novel. Thanks AA Dhand and Muzz Khan

Change Narrator

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I am an avid audio book purchaser across a wide range of books. For this audio book I found the narrator without clear speech and the need to increase the volume for clarity

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Honestly I am unsure I really listened to the story during travelling due to narrator

How could the performance have been better?

Clearer speech and better character voices

Extremely poor diction

Unfortunately I did not listen to the book as one minute in I was distracted by the lisping , staccato delivery of the narrator. Please believe me accents can add a dimension to any story and enhance it. Sadly this was not the case here where the diction proved to be a distraction too far!

Igniting a Flame in a Dark Place

Ive read a lot of new authors in the past year or so and when I noticed this one being trailed by Audible it looked like a must read. Having grown up in a very multi-cultural town and seen and experienced racism and its effects at close hand this book seemed bound to appeal to me assuming that the author made his characters seem real!

AA Dhand has done just that pulling together a story and set of characters that very much reflect my experiences of how prejudice is wide-spread and multi-faceted. How it normally exists in a bi-lateral fashion between any two groups rather than one-way as is often portrayed. A Sikh married to a Muslim in a city where right wing parties are active is always going to provide rich fodder for a story. Dhand gets stuck right into it, I enjoyed the Virdee character as well as the contrasting spirituality of his wife. This mix of levels of faith and charming superstition reflect many of my own experiences. It brings out a fascinating complexity and sophistication in the character relationships and their motivations.

Of course this book had to be more than just a stroll through Bradfords problems and faith groups. Billed as a hard-hitting detective story it really delivers, the plot is very good and the violence and threat level of the characters is excellent.

Read all the multi-packs and shorts packs long ago, since 2012. The author has gotten better with age/practice. I've read almost all of the Cooper stories (1 - 230) and several of Mr. Bernico's short stories and most have not disappointed me. You'll find some poorly written or predictable stories, but for the most part they are fair to good. The Cooper series are better, but there's a few stinkers, too. They're great for a coffee break or a few minutes to relax.
