    Not my favorite
The performance was amazing! But the book was not my favorite. It took me a lot longer to get through this one than any others of hers.
    Lovely book
Such a lovely feel good book can't wait to start the next one
I would recommend anyone to listen thanks
    A1
Great storyline, hard to put down. Listened to this perfect narration well into the wee small hours. Love the personification of Lola's Irish accent.

In the isolated Cape Cod village of Prospect, the Gilly sisters are as different as can be. Jo, a fierce and quiet loner, is devoted to the mysteries of her family's salt farm, while Claire is popular, pretty, and yearns to flee the salt at any cost. But the Gilly land hides a dark legacy that proves impossible to escape. Although the community half-suspects the Gilly sisters might be witches, it doesn't stop Whit Turner, the town's wealthiest bachelor, from forcing his way into their lives. It's Jo who first steals Whit's heart, but it is Claire - heartbroken over her high school sweetheart - who marries him.
Years later, estranged from her family, Claire finds herself thrust back onto the farm with the last person she would have chosen: her husband's pregnant mistress. Suddenly, alliances change, old loves return, and new battle lines are drawn. What the Gilly sisters learn about each other, the land around them, and the power of the salt, will not only change each of their lives forever, it will also alter Gilly history for good.

The last 5 chapters will anger you!
I loved The Little Giant Of Aberdeen! I was totally invested in this story until the last 5 chapters. I literally rolled my eyes over and over. I even got angry. When the last chapter was announced, I started to talk to the book. I didn't say nice things. Too bad for a masterfully developed plot to crash and burn in such spectacular flames. DON'T GET INVOLVED!!!!!!
    Just OK
The reading was good. The reader had a pleasant voice and good expression throughout.
I didn't care for the story. It was slow and not too much happened. I didn't feel invested in the characters at any point and never felt like I really "knew" them. I only finished the book because I was reading it for a book group.
    A pinch of salt
I like this book the reading was excellent and you get a real sense of who the characters really are. Joe accepts her fate while Clare rebels against it. Things don't always go the way of Clare no matter how hard she tries.

    Title: Carry the One
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: Carol Anshaw
    Narrator: Renée Raudman
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 14 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-06-12
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 85 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Carry the One begins in the hours following Carmen's wedding reception, when a car filled with stoned, drunk, and sleepy guests accidently hits and kills a girl on a dark country road. For the next 25 years, those involved, including Carmen and her brother and sister, connect, disconnect, and reconnect with one another and their victim. As one character says, "When you add us up, you always have to carry the one."
Through friendships and love affairs; marriage and divorce; parenthood, holidays, and the modest tragedies and joys of ordinary days, Carry the One shows how one life affects another and how those who thrive and those who self-destruct are closer to one another than we'd expect. Deceptively short and simple in its premise, this novel derives its power and appeal from the author's beautifully precise use of language; her sympathy for her very recognizable, flawed characters; and her persuasive belief in the transforming forces of time and love.
    Critic Reviews:
Splendid . . . seductive . . . vivid. . . . In sketches, landscapes, and erotic etchings, [Anshaw] carries not just one but all her characters through a quarter century of adulthood. And she makes the task look graceful. (Entertainment Weekly, A)
"Anshaw has a deft touch with the events of ordinary life, giving them heft and meaning. . . . Funny, touching, knowing . . . a quiet, lovely, genuine accomplishment." (Publishers Weekly, Starred Review)
Masterful in her authenticity, quicksilver dialogue, wise humor, and receptivity to mystery, Anshaw has created a deft and transfixing novel of fallibility and quiet glory. (Donna Seaman, Booklist, Starred Review)

    Carry On...Without Me
"Taste is subjective"... mine rejected this one after about 3 hours.
I could NOT get into this. I disliked it immediately (something I rarely feel). I found the characters almost repulsive with nothing even remotely likeable or interesting about the lot of them as they meandered through their lives...which seemed pointless--at least up to the 3 hour mark. I bailed, and am disqualifying myself from anything other than putting my honest opinion of an abbreviated experience in writing.
To possible readers--I'd suggest reading other reviews, listening to the sample provided, in making your choice.Carry the One must get exponentially better--because it has garnered great reviews everywhere, and I don't want to discourage anyone from a read that may become their very favorite flavor.
    Such a disappointment!
This book had such hype and such potential. It seemed the point would be how these people have been haunted by this horrible accident and the aftereffects changing their lives. These people started out messed up and continued to be messed up. How can you tell the accident changed their life? Also, didn't like the writing style at all. I hate wasting my points.
    Saga of a Damaged Family
This is the story of 3 siblings who as young adults are involved to one degree or another in the accidental death of a 10-year-old child. They all carry her with them ('carry the one') as they grow into their lives. One, an artist, does her finest work painting "portraits" of the child as she grows through the life the artist imagines for her. Another, an asrophysicist, plunges deeper and deeper into drug abuse and despair. This was a richly imagined tale, and the narrator was superb.

    Publisher's Summary:
For Willa Jacobs, seeing her best friend, Jane Weston, is like looking in a mirror on a really good day. Strangers assume they are sisters, a comparison Willa secretly enjoys. They share an apartment, clothing, and groceries, eking out rent with part-time jobs. Willa writes advertising copy, dreaming up inspirational messages for tea bags, while Jane cleans houses and writes poetry about it. Together Willa and Jane are a fortress of private jokes and shared opinions, with a friendship so close there's hardly room for anyone else. But when Ben, Willa's oldest friend, reappears and falls in love with Jane, Willa wonders: Can she let her two best friends find happiness with each other if it means leaving her behind?
    Critic Reviews:
"Pure Emily Griffin...hard emotional truths go down easily amid smart, rapid-fire wit. A pure if heartbreaking pleasure." (Booklist)
"Fox has a talent for language and her wounded, witty Willa is a remarkably complex creation...Moving, artfully written..." (Kirkus Reviews)
    Members Reviews:
    Sacrifices
This book draws you in from the very first page. After the introduction of the two main characters Willa and Jane at their strained meeting you are hooked. One needs to know what happened to these two women to make their meeting so cold and sterile.
Back track to somewhere after their friendship is well established. Best friends, nearly sisters who are so in tune with each other you can't imagine what would have brought them to the situation they are today. Willa does not want to attend her high school reunion, but Jane encourages her to attend. Willa does and enter, Ben, her high school best friend. Ben, who was always there for Willa back then, but now an improved version.
Willa introduces Ben to Jane and the attraction between the two is instant. What develops next is Willa's confusion over where she fits into the equation with Jane and with Ben. Finally, it dawns on Willa that she is envious of her two best friends relationships.
What happens next is probably predicatable, including how it all ends.
    A Really Enjoyable Read
I really enjoyed this book. I literally didn't want to put it down and ended up staying awake all night to finish it.
The lovely part about Friends Like Us is the balance of depth and humor. It feels light enough to keep it moving at a lively pace, but the themes it embraces aren't light at all which made for a satisfying read. The relationships in this book are complicated, even as the characters seem clear and easy to relate to. I'm drawn to work that explores change and growth and difficult decisions, but I also appreciated the note of fun throughout this book, which is peppered with dry wit, clever descriptions, and a few wicked puns.
The artful depiction of the formation of a friendship I found particularly touching. It made the ultimate betrayals in the storyline all the more heartbreaking.
I highly recommend this novel. I'm already looking forward to her next one.
    interesting but not great
I enjoyed Fox's novel, but the story is not particularly original or insightful. If you are looking for something quick and light, this book is a good one to read. If you are looking for an engaging, thought-provoking novel, look elsewhere.
    Witty and deep
I have been a fan of Lauren Fox's writing since Still Life With Husband. And I loved Friends Like Us, too.

    Title: Ragnarok

    Publisher: Canongate Books
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Ragnarok is narrated by Harriet Walter and retells the finale of Norse mythology. A story of the destruction of life on this planet and the end of the gods themselves: what more relevant myth could any modern writer choose? Just as Wagner used this dramatic and catastrophic struggle for the climax of his Ring Cycle, so A.S. Byatt now reinvents it in all its intensity and glory.
Ragnarok is the story of the end of the world. It is a tale of destruction of life on this planet and the end of the gods themselves. What more relevant myth could any modern writer find? As the bombs rain down in the Second World War, one young girl is evacuated to the English countryside. She is struggling to make sense of her new wartime life. Then she is given a copy of Asgard and the Gods - a book of ancient Norse myths - and her inner and outer worlds are transformed. War, natural disaster, reckless gods and the recognition of impermanence in the world are just some of the threads that A.S. Byatt weaves into this most timely of books. Just as Wagner borrowed from this dramatic Norse saga for the climax of the Ring Cycle, so Byatt reinvents it for our time in all its intensity and glory.
Linguistically stunning and imaginatively abundant, this is a landmark piece of storytelling from one of the world's truly great writers. Harriet Walter narrates with much feeling and integrity.
    Members Reviews:
    Wonderful.
Ive always found it difficult to read the myths: whether the Greek, Roman, Nordik - whatever - theres something about them that makes them incomprehensible to me; I quickly get lost amongst all the names and creatures and feuds, and I always thought that it was because I didnt have the background knowledge, or the classics education, to be able to follow the stories. And that's just how it was feeling, once again, as I was listening to this ... I love the stories, and the sheer imaginative strangeness of the tales, but couldnt help feeling I was missing more than I was picking up, and if the book wasnt so short I probably wouldnt have made it to the end - and that wonderful last chapter. In it, A.S. Byatt explains her own difficulty with the myths - even after a lifetime of reading, studying and retelling them - and she gives a beautiful account of how they've shaped her view of humanity, and her work too, and in so doing she made the whole tale of Ragnarok make (some sort of) sense to me ... Wonderful stuff. I'll definitely be listening to this again in the future. (It helped that the narrator was brilliant: perfect tone for this tale.) So, overall a very satisfying and enjoyable experience, and a thoroughly recommended part of the Cannongate Myth series - though I would say to listen to the last chapter first!
    Listen to this story
Would you listen to Ragnarok again? Why?
I had kept this in my wish list until I had a cash credit and wish I had bought is months ago. It is definitely worth a credit. The story is, as it says in the review, based around Norse mythology from the perspective of a modern - 2nd world war -perspective. It is so much more. It contemplates 'the big questions' of creation and destruction using beautiful language and vivid imagery. the story is told from the view point of a child growing and developing in wartime.

    Publisher's Summary:
Late one summer evening, antiquarian bookseller Adam Snow is returning from a client visit when he takes a wrong turn. He stumbles across a derelict Edwardian house, and compelled by curiosity, approaches the door. Standing before the entrance, he feels the unmistakable sensation of a small cold hand creeping into his own, as if a child had taken hold of it.
At first he is merely puzzled by the odd incident but then begins to suffer attacks of fear and panic, and is visited by nightmares. He is determined to learn more about the house. But when he does, he receives further, increasingly sinister, visits from the small hand.
    Members Reviews:
Ranks right up there with The Haunting.
What about Cameron Stewarts performance did you like?
    Credible narration.
    Any additional comments?
The Small hand is my favorite type of ghost story. It is not overly drawn-out or gory, simply a curious story with a pinch of the supernatural.
    Well told tale
    Any additional comments?
Like The Woman in Black by the same author, this is a ghost story that is told efficiently and believably, with credible characters. Makes you wonder what you would do if faced with the same spooky circumstances. It's not a long book - under 4 hours, which is makes it enjoyable to get through in a reasonable amount of time. A nice interlude between longer reads. Very well read by the narrator.
    Intriguing, but not spine-tingling
This was an interesting enough story told by an author who knows how to spin a yarn. It concerns a modern day antique book dealer and ivory-tower type pursuits, which might appeal to some listeners and leave others less intrigued. It was mildly creepy, and maybe could have used a little more angst. But, it wasn't overly long, and I was always curious about what was behind the Small Hand.
The small hand that creeped me out.
What made the experience of listening to The Small Hand the most enjoyable?
The narrator's voice was the most enjoyable part. He told the story so well ,and you could almost feel the emotions he was feeling.
What did you like best about this story?
The ending. I finally learned what the entire story was about and why it happened. I did not guess ahead of time what the ending would be so I really enjoyed that. Susan Hill can build tension in a story very well.
Which character as performed by Cameron Stewart was your favorite?
The main character was my favourite. He was easy going and easy to relate to. He is a very straight forward man . It was very refreshing hearing this story from his perspective
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Yes, when he was left the country and went to visit the monastery in the hope of buying the book he was going to view. The eerie moments he had when he was there and the spiritual moments he spent talking to the monks, esp when he told one of them what was happening with him, how he felt he was being haunted.
    Any additional comments?
This was a very good book to listen to. I do prefer The Woman In Black but this was very very good too.
    Suspenseful and engaging.
Would you listen to The Small Hand again? Why?
Probably, but not soon. The suspense wouldn't be quite the same knowing the end of the story. In a few months or a year then even knowing the ending I could move along with the emotions and tension of the story.

My LEAST favorite Margaret Mayhew Book (thus far)
After reading "The Crew" which was excellent in every way (not available on Audible, probably a licensing thing), this book was a terrible disappointment. The characters are not fleshed out in a pleasing way and by the end of the book I was disgusted with both main characters. If I could return this book, I would.
    berlin 1948.
    Any additional comments?
Margaret mayhew writes really good war stories and this one is no exception, only in this one the war is over and Michael harris, the pathfinder who sent down flares lighting a path for the bombers, finds himself in berlin trying to help the berliners in the british sector to survive against all the dirty tricks the russians put in the way. he falls in love with lily a young woman in the russian sector.
well written characters, the kind you get involved with, and situations.
recommended if you like war stories.

    Members Reviews:
    Weak Plot.
Having read and enjoyed The Illusion of Separateness by Simon Van Booy I have no doubt he is a good writer but he lost me with Everything Beautiful Began After.
The writing is fine but the plot left me cold. For me there was something missing for the entire book that I just could not quite put my finger on.
The three main characters are simply not real enough and I couldn't quite "get" why George had to have a drinking problem...why Rebecca had to vanish so dramatically quite early in the book and why Henry acted in such a bizarre way in his grief. My goodness....he barely knew the woman and yet it took two years of utter madness to come to terms with his loss.
Nothing in the plot really adds up and if there was a hidden message here I didn't get it.
Perhaps that is my downfall but I couldn't recommend this rather weak attempt at something I'm not quite sure of!!!
the beauty and tragedy of love
Simon Van Booy's writing is always moving. His short stories are my absolute favorite, and I am not a fan of short stories, so it takes a lot to persuade me. In this painful novel, each sentence takes me somewhere, and plays with my emotions. There is poetry in his expression and his characters are always human beings rather than just sketches so many novelists create. I always feel Simon Van Booy must have lived a full life rich with joy and tragedy alike. The story is alive with fragile beauty even in the raw ugliness of our emotions. The hardest thing is to read a novel where you know the character's world is going to collapse. You feel every moment of his happiness as a debt that fate is going to collect. I think a lot of us live like that, blindly sucking the marrow of our happiness forgetting about balance and that happiness can't last forever. It is a novel of terrible loss, and though there is a love triangle, it is not the true heart of the novel. Gorgeous writing. I wish I had even a droplet of his talent as a writer. I will never understand how more people haven't stumbled upon his work, and I always recommend his books. With most of the literary garbage we see hogging the shelves, we finally have a novel that lives and breathes.I think that is the best way to describe Simon Van Booy's writing, it is a living breathing being- it has a soul. I cannot wait for his next novel, The Illusion Of Separateness.
    Too confusing
I really wanted to love this book. It started off great and just went downhill from there.

    Just plain bad
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I have just finished Cross of St George and In the King's Name.
Before I say more, Ive listen to the complete Alexander Kent Bolitho
series as well as the complete Master and Commander, Hornblower, Two
years before the mast and many many others. These two have got to be
the worst sailing books Ive listened to by far. Its hard to believe Kent even
wrote them. The story line is, well Im not sure what the story line was! Rambling
and full of phrases used over and over from passed books. Retrospective and introspective at the same time. All previous books are 5 stars. I came very close
    to not finishing these two.
Has In the King's Name turned you off from other books in this genre?
    No
What about Christian Rodskas performance did you like?
    Great, love his work
Too many prior missing volumes to make sense.
Between this volume and Relentless Persuit, I lost track of the characters since Sir Richards friends and family are far in the background. By the way, to read about the death of Richard you will have to buy the written volume and read almost the last paragraph of the story. As a result, to me Adam's story by reason of all of the missing prior volumes in Audible had become very uninteresting if not redundant. The missing volumes in audible during Sir Richards part of the series was annoying but one was able to follow the story and I enjoyed the series very much. Post Sir Richard. I felt there was just too much missing.
