    Great Summer Book
I can just imagine a church like this one in the south. Characters that really come to life!
    A bit sappy
If you like sappy books, this one is good. I just don't care for this type of book. I prefer who done it types of books, drama, and mystery.
    Good
I was afraid this was going to be one of those "girly (translate sappy)" stories, but it was actually very good and entertaining. I would certainly recommend it.
    not enough info
I did like the story, but as with all abridged texts, I finished wanting the whole story. I wonder if what I missed in the abridgement would have made the story that much better.
    The Sunday Wife
The Sunday Wife is an interesting novel. I recommend it!

    too predictable
the book is abriged and thus very short. If I had the longer version I would enjoyed developed story lines. this version is choppy.
    Great story and amazingly narrated.
This is one of my favorite books. I read it over 20 years ago. Once I started to read it, it was truly one of those books that is hard to put down. There is never a dull moment that most storys have. I decided to get it on audio recently to relive the story of Kane & Abel and all i can say is WOW!!! Jeff Harding is so talented at telling a story. I found my self once again reliving this as if I had never read it before. I would recommend this as a must have in any fans collection!

Now, after seven years, he is out, free, at a crossroads, trying to make a fresh start, to fit into the life of Conestoga High School in the small upstate New York town to which he has been brought by his father absent from his life since he was a month old. The man is certainly charismatic. He is also crude, apparently addicted to bodybuilding and beer swilling. He has no visible job, no known past.
Associated by the town with his father's coarseness, hectored by the boorish football coach and the coach's pack of steroid-pumping teens, feeling himself losing ground, Andy is stunned to discover that the most popular girl in town is attracted to him. Terri, the homecoming queen, the school beauty, every boy's dream girl, a born-again Christian, a really nice girl. Andy can't believe it. He is immediately head over heels in love first love and determined to protect Terri from everything bad on earth. Worried that his father, even he himself, might contaminate her, and determined for her sake to discover what his father is, Andy begins to delve into the locked rooms and dangerous currents of the elder Tietam Brown's past and present.
What happens is told in an audiobook that is appealingly direct, moving, and altogether pleasurable in its superb storytelling and celebration of the human spirit.

    a must hear
When i picked this one out i had no idea it was written by a pro wrestler, which makes it that much better! The story is hauntingly uplifting in a sick perverted way, Chuck Palahniuk, and Johnathan Frazer fans will enjoy this book, i am looking froward to his next novel
Yes, this is a worthwhile audiobook
A dark yet mesmerizing coming-of-age story. I really wasn't expecting much from this author knowing that he's a pro wrestler but I could not stop listening to this audiobook. It's not classic literature but it is an interesting, well-paced, complex novel.
    Mick does it again
Mrs Foleys baby boy in his third novel tells a hart warming story that is juat as sick as can be... I LOVE THIS BOOK
    amazed.
i often listen to audio books as im going to bed. i am a huge wrestling fan but had never heard of tietam brown until a few years ago. when i found the audio book i had to listen. It is such a great story, and mick does a really good job presenting the story
    Caricatures of Characters
    Narrator was fine.
However if the book were a play it would be vaudeville. Every character is either a sexual deviant villian or an angelic damsel/pornstar whilst the hero remains an ignorant wholesome youngster despite the barrage of heinous deeds done to him.
The story started off really well but quickly became farcical to a point of disconnect for me.
The writing style is interestingly low brow yet poetic.
Not unintelligent but to me it felt like a draft for a much better story if the author sat back and asked himself what he was trying to say about the human condition or morality or religion. Instead of only trying to be shocking.

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Michael Chabon, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, has joined forces with the editors of McSweeney's Quarterly Concern to create a collection of action-packed short stories by some of today's most talented names in literature. Elmore Leonard's telling of life for a fifteen-year-old boy and his dad in 1920's Oklahoma in "How Carlos Webster Changed His Name to Carl and Became a Famous Oklahoma Lawman" shifts easily to the happenings of an adolescent's unexpected run-in with the future in Nick Hornby's "Otherwise Pandemonium." In these and other stories, including Stephen King's "The Tale of Gray Dick," Michael Crichton's "Blood Doesn't Come Out," "Up the Mountain Coming Down Slowly" by Dave Eggers, Harlan Ellison's "Goodbye to All That" (read by Harlan Ellison, himself), Rick Moody's "The Albertine Notes," and "The Martian Agent, A Planetary Romance" by Michael Chabon, the authors return to the traditions of pulp fiction, spinning adventurous, suspense-ridden tales destined to keep their audience on the edges of their seats.

    M2T3=Great Entertainment
Each time I have downloaded a collection of short stories from audible, I have not been disappointed. Nor was I surprised to find these unabridged selections from McSweeney's Mammoth Treasury of Thrilling Tales to be very entertaining.
I purchased this selection based primarily on the fact that it contained a short story (short excerpt) by Stephen King from his forthcoming novel The Dark Tower V:The Wolves of the Calla due out in November,(hopefully, please, available on audible.) This was okay but, based on the fact that is an excerpt from 7 part series, it is actually probably the weakest story in the collection. (Begging again, the first four volumes of The Dark Tower are due to be rereleased on audio at the end of June. I hope that audible can get them...)
All of the stories are really good but I especially liked Nick Hornby's "Otherwise Pandemonium" and Elmore Leonard's "How Carlos Webster Changed His Name to Carl and Became a Famous Oklahoma Lawman." I also very much enjoyed Dave Egger's "Up the Mountain Coming Down Slowly, which contains probably the best narrative description of altitude induced psychosis (temporary) that I will ever hear.
Every story here, from Michael Crichton's very short and quite disturbing "Blood Doesn't Come Out" to Rick Moody's dark New York future in "The Albertine Notes", has something to offer any listener. Short stories and audio books are a perfect match and this collection is highly recommended by this reviewer.
    Disappointing
While there are some very good stories in this collection, they are unfortunately outweighed by the remaining stories.Perhaps the stories which were not included are better. I also enjoyed Mr.

Inexorably, the Marines of the 34th FIST are drawn deeper and deeper into the politics of a world where murder, terror, and betrayal are the accepted methods of government...and everyone is ripe for an old-fashioned butt-kickin'.

    Why such a drastic abridgment?
I bought three of these but wish I had not. I am a fan of military sf, but the stories I got were so cut up and condensed that it was hardly worth hearing. They might have been pretty good had there been any character development left, but sadly it all ended up on the cutting room floor. I hope the authors were really angry when they saw what the publisher did to their hard work. Save your money and look for the unabridged version elsewhere.
    Excellent book and narrator!
Loved the action packed book. The narrator did a fine job. Excellent!
    Great series
This entire series in print is great, but this download is abridged. Still good for a couple of hours in the car or on the train.
    Disappointing
Narrative was choppy, and the plot hard to follow. The story jumps from scene to scene with little or no explanation as to why we are suddenly there. The characters were cardboard cut-outs, full of Semper Fi machismo, with almost no backstory to make you care for them. As a military Sci-Fi piece, I was expecting some detail into tactics and combat, but there was little of that as well. Entire battles were condensed to one or two un-fulfilling sentences. Finally, the conclusion to the plot comes right out of left field, with no chance for the reader to discover it for themselves. It was a disappointing end to a disappointing story.

    Language: English
    Release date: 12-16-99
    Publisher: Bantam Doubleday Dell Audio

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The main issues for Ben as a doctor had been tactical and so it would be with his death. But he hadn't considered the persuasiveness of memory - the promise he made to his wife Rachel, the love of his life, during World War II. Or life's mystery. On his journey he meets a young couple who are "forever," a drifter offering left-handed advice that might lessen the pain, a veterinarian with a touch only a heart surgeon would recognize, a rancher bent on destruction, a migrant worker who tests Ben's ability to understand. And just when he thinks there is no turning back, nothing to lose that wasn't lost, his power of interventions is called upon and his very identity tested.
Full of humanity, passion, and moral honesty, East of the Mountains is a bold and beautiful novel of personal discovery.
    Members Reviews:
    Well written and beautifully read.
Although I was a bit put off by the premise of a dying man going off to commit suicide in the mountains (sounds depressing, doesn't it?) I continued listening because the writing and reading were so good. I am very glad that I stuck with it. The story spirals marvelously from despair to redemption, and Herrmann's voice enhances the richness of the writing.
Wonderful book - very moving story.
I don't read (or listen to) many works of fiction. Non-fiction is usually my first choice. But I love this narrator and this book was just wonderful. The references to WWII and the way the story moved back and forth with ease between present day and the main character's memories as a young man made it such an interesting and heart warming story. Clearly well-researched, the book kept me up late at night because I didn't want to stop listening. As a daughter, I was often left thinking about how my own dad might react to a diagnosis of cancer. This story has some sad moments but I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes! I have recommended the Kindle version to many friends and now I am happy to be able to recommend the audio book too!
What did you like best about this story?
This story is completely original, I loved the basis of it and the character development. There were so many great surprises that happened through out the book that I kept guessing how it would all work out.
    Any additional comments?
I recommend going on to book 2 in the series, Honor Roll, for a insight on Luca Gregorio.
I didn't want it to end!

Right some the start, I loved the female lead! she was so down to earth, and someone I feel I would be friends with. Taking this trip with her in the secret world of getting paid for sex.. but not in a low class cheesey street walker way. I would of done the same thing in her shoes. Ok Ill admit it.. who would not love to be spoiled by a man? shopping trips, spa trips, oh and the shoes and clothes! and the great food! sign me up! OK Iwell not really, but in fantasy, I am all in.
Loved this book. I was actually sad that it was ending. I knew it was coming, and I kept hoping every chapter was not going to be the last. but it finally ended. I was bummed. I wanted to hear more! This book will go in my repeat list, and I am sure Ill listen to it a dozen or so more times.
This is kind of like a modern day Pretty Women, but so much better. if you liked that movie, you will love The Deans List!
Aria Abientas performance was spot on and I do hope to to hear more from her.
I was provided this audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator for an unbiased review via Audio Boom..
