I am a big fan of Tim Winton but I just can't listen to this audio book. Stig Wemyss doesn't have enough faith enough in the writer and imposes a false sense of urgency which doesn't suit the text at all.

Amazing Fantastic Book!

I loved this book! It was made into a Hallmark movie, and draws you into caring about the characters. The book and movie diverge a bit here and there, but both are excellent. There are times of genuine difficulty and one real tragedy that breaks your heart -- but I love the hopefulness, and the differences made by friendship. This book is absolutely fantastic!!!

Another piece of Terry Kay magic!

I've always been a big fan of Terry Kay's writing and this book is just another example of his lyrical way with words. Noah, the main character, is a young man who drifts into town and ends up changing the lives of all he meets. He doesn't do it intentionally, he just exudes a presence that makes people think twice...about who they are and how they treat others.

Yes, this is a book about fishing, but it's about so much more. The Valley of Light is a beautiful read with a nice little twist at the end, leaving you to wonder what happens next for the characters you have come to know and love.

Very enjoyable!

I own the DVD and have watched the movie several times over the years. It's a really good movie. I also enjoyed the book and, although it differed from the movie in a lot of ways, it is quite good. I think I liked the protagonist, Noah Locke, better in the movie although the book filled in the characters a lot more and gave the reader a better understanding of their world and their problems. Noah was a more troubled soul in the book and the boy, Matthew, was a totally different character. Peavo and Moody didn't change: their friendly badinage was a constant source of amusement. The mysticism surrounding old Hoke Moore that appeared at the beginning of the movie did not appear in the book until the final pages.

The main characters were beautifully drawn. I felt that if I could live in their world, I would immediately like most of them. One reviewer listed some of the lines in the book that he especially liked. I got a real chuckle out of this one where Peavo embarrassed himself with a misstatement and Moody told him to "Put some pepper on your toes, Peavo. That'll keep your feet out of your mouth."

All in all, I really enjoyed the book and have added it to my collection of personal favorites.

You don't like it? Swine Not?

Admittedly this is an exercise in literary style for Mr. Buffet it is style funny and fun. How can you seriously expect a great literary work from the man that brought you Barefoot Children and The Night I Painted the Sky? This was a relaxing read on an airplane and it’s going be a relaxing listen at the office. I don’t want great works of dramatic prose like Steinbeck or Hemmingway when I download Buffet, I want Margaritaville. He delivers at a level for Children and adults :P

I love this book! Read it first then found it on Audible. Listen to it at least 3 times a year.

Pass on this latest entry from a very gifted writer. However, this would probably be a good read for anyone 12 years and younger.

Not soo much

I love Jimmy buffet. I liked most of his books - audio and otherwise. This one is ridiculous. Might be good for kids - not really sure.

A great listen

Would you listen to Swine Not? again? Why?

This book was a great listen and I recommend it especially for listening. If you want a great book to make you forge about the downer things in life and actually catch you off guard with its humor, this is it.

What other book might you compare Swine Not? to and why?

Tim Conway's autobiography. Why? Because this has as much genius and imagination as Tim put into his characters.

Which character as performed by L. J. Ganser and Jimmy Buffett was your favorite?

The pig of course. He captured the things people don't know about the species like its intelligence. The parts where she tells the story is priceless.

L.J. Ganser was a very good narrator who managed to capture a teenager and a pig's voice perfectly. And his voice for the leader of the pigeons, priceless!

If you could rename Swine Not?, what would you call it?

It is perfectly named because it reflects Mr. Buffett's sense of humor.

painfully dull

I'm a big Rice fan, but this was the most painfully dull book, overly romantic and full of baloney about horses. As one who's grown up on a horse farm, I didn't know weather to laugh of vomit over al the romaticizing and factual errors about horses. And the soppy male lead? Get real!

"No More Zombies"

"With an instinct like a water-diviner's where money's concerned," twenty-five-year-old Joe Lampton is ready for "a very different world." His parents dead, having been raised by an aunt in Dufton, an impoverished and dying town with a river running nearby filled with "water as sluggish as pus," and having fulfilled his military service Joe is ready to move on up in life. He wants a life with "no more zombies" as he and his best friend Charles Lufford dubs anyone they "didn't approve of" and Lampton is willing to do anything to make sure that a new and better life is his--at any price.

Room at the Top (1957; with an Introduction by Janine Utel in the Valancourt re-issue of 2013) is writer John Braine's immensely successful first novel and it stands as an important contribution to a short-lived group of literary works by a variety of writers in Britain exposing the frustration and angst of lower and blue-collar class individuals after World War II. Utel explains "the phrase `Angry Young Men' was coined by journalists and taken up by the media to characterize a loosely defined but still major shift in English literary culture."

Braine (1922-1986) has as his narrator Joe Lampton and Joe paints a very bleak picture of his hometown and roots and makes a start contrast between Dufton and Warley where Joe becomes an accountant for the City Council and believes he has found "a footing in a very different world." It is a "new way of living" and "a place without memories" for Joe where in three months he is more involved in the life of Warley "than I ever had been in my birthplace." In spite of (or possibly because of) these positives, Joe becomes an opportunist. To him success means money, material possessions, power, control, and above all, sex--all the things he has never known in his earlier life--and other people are merely objects who fall onto a rating scale created by him and his friend Charles. For Joe, "life doesn't often bother to be charming once childhood has passed" and Joe starts "manoeuvring for position all the time."

One of Braine's many accomplishments in Room at the Top is that when readers least expect it, Braine introduces some history or qualities into the character of Joe Lampton that humanizes him and allows the reader to understand and at times even sympathize with Lampton who might otherwise just come across as a callous, amoral man of ambition. Given his background, few readers are likely to find Joe's desire for a better life ignoble. The revelation about Joe's parents' death during the blitz is ironic and quite moving. There are passing references to Joe serving as a prisoner of war (although he appears to laugh off the experience as having been better than being killed or having to continue to fly RAF missions).

Great book, decent audio.

I'd already read this book (on paper), just wanted something fun to listen to; this is! I love how Hiaasen creates these characters that are completely wacko, but somehow so lovable because of their innate sense of justice & good intentions.

The narration is decent; Curtin especially does a good job with Honey. The only thing that grated on me was that she made Sammy Tigertail (a 1/2-Seminole) sound sorta Canadian/Minnesotan/Dumb-white-person-imitating-Native-American-speaking-English. It wasn't pronounced enough to be totally offensive, but it was annoying. Having grown up near reservations in the northeastern US, I sorta get what she was going for, but really... the kid was raised off res, by his white mom, for part of his childhood. He'd probably speak like another southern Floridian.

Overall, not bad.

Another Hilarious book from Carl Hiasson

Loved Double Whammy. though Nature Girl is funny and entertaining, Jane Curtain does a superb job narrating nature girl. Enjoyable ad funny. But far from being one of my favorites from Hiasson

Hiaasen's Best!

What made the experience of listening to Nature Girl the most enjoyable?

This has to be my favorite Hiaasen book! Great story and the characters are fabulous. Hiaasen has a special way of bringing the crazies out in a soothing way. Becareful of the abridged version though... I accidentially purchased it and they are not returnable! We picked up the full version at the library and loved it much more than the abridged.

Nature Girl

I love everything by Carl Hiaasen and was not disappointed by Nature Girl. The thought of getting even with those annoying telemarketers made me smile all the way to work. The narrator did a great job with the voices.

Es una historia clásica y simple, pero muy parecida a lo que algunos padres o madres de familia sufren por hijos (as) ingratos (as) de la actualidad. El tema se siente como que le podría pasar a cualquier padre o madre de este siglo.

Australian Vietnam vet with Agent Orange

book is set, I believe in the 1980s. The vet is suffering from Agent Orange exposure, but it is before either the U.S. or Australia are admitting that Agent Orange is the cause of so much damage. So in this book, a group of Vietnam vets who served together decide to grow hashish and sell it in has honey to earn enough to help vets who have been harmed and who arent getting help from the government. Its totally illegal, but they have this enterprise for a year, raise a lot of money and help a lot of people. Its a very interesting book with the vet and his wife coming back together after having almost been separated by the events of the war because he cant talk about them. Also, some interesting contrasts between experiences of Australian Vietnam vets and American Vietnam vets.

Unworthy

This book is totally unworthy of Bryce - of whom I am a great fan.

Bryce has lived up to all expectations. Loved this book.

Too Short!

I'd barely gotten into this and it was over! That's the fastest time gone by. I was disappointed Courtenay cut this book off so quickly because I loved where this story was headed.

Great Book as always!!!

This is one is one of the shortest Bryce Courtney's books but definitely never disappointing. Bryce always writes to enlighten his public. If one has never serviced in war and lived after the experience, Bryce is an author to make the experience real for others. He always has a message in his writing and is always up lifting. He will be missed. Thank you Bryce!!!
