    Autor:: Sven Regener
    Erzähler: Sven Regener
    Format: Unabridged
Spieldauer: 5 hrs and 59 mins
    Sprache: Deutsch
    Veröffentlichungsdatum: 07-10-09
    Herausgeber: tacheles! / Roof Music

    Kategorien: Fiction, Contemporary

    German Book
Ordered and received in two days - outstanding service - thank you! I had to order it as a desk copy for a German class we're teaching on campus now on it's way to the professor's home.
Captures a time and mood perfectly
This is a fine novel that captures the Berlin 80s anti-hero mood perfectly. The book is the basis for the German film of the same name (released in Europe under the English title "Berlin Blues"), which contrary to what one reviewer says on this page, did not "bomb" in Germany, but was a commercial and critical success (two German film prizes, including one for the screenplay, also written by the novelist). The follow-up to this novel (actually a prequel, also featuring Herr Lehmann as the protagonist) has debuted in Germany at number 3 on the best-seller list. As for "Herr Lehmann" itself, you won't find a better novel about the unique Berlin 1980s anti-hero sensibilities anywhere.
    good read
great story of berlin life in the southwest right before the wall fell. herr lehmann reminds me of many of my friends...
    great book!
    I saw the movie
I didn't read the book but I just saw the movie at the Vancouver International Film Festival. It was great! Funny, dark humour, and paints a picture of "slackers" in Berlin in the late 80's just before the wall came down. If the book is anything like the movie, it should be a great read!

    Better than Jaws!
Jaws was certainly scary in it's images of a big fish, but this book captured my attention. I tried to listen every chance I got. The writing was good and the narration made it even better. I would recommend this book.
    Ends abruptly
I loved Jaws so I thought I would like this one just as much. I didn't but Jaws is one of the best books I've ever listened to so this had a lot to live up to. The Deep isn't bad per se but I just had higher hopes for it.

All of a sudden, nothing in his life feels right. His restlessness is further fuelled when he finds a book by a little-known Portuguese writer, Amadeo de Prado. The appearance of the mysterious woman, and Prado's prescient words, all seem to tell him the same thing: that he must leave everything behind.
So, early the next morning, he packs a bag and boards the night train to Lisbon on a restless journey across Europe and deep within himself in the hope of discovering someone who will make him feel alive and connected to himself and the world once more.

    Excellent
I just loved this book on Audi. Will listen to it again and again. Narrator perfect.
A wonderful and movingly deep story
Night train to Lisbon is a journey of introspection and self awareness. Simply, Loved it.
The performance could have been better, the voice is quite soft when some characters speak
No time for the night train
Sorry had to give up, after a grinding eight chapters I finally gave in. The idea of the story was great but it just never got anywhere and was so slow it became boring. Although the narration was excellent the listener would have to have the patience of a saint to get through the detail, by then you have forgotten what was happening. A real shame, so many chapters gone to waste.
You'll love it or hate it
This is a book the reader will either love or despise. It never sets out even vaguely to be an action-packed page turner, so look elsewhere if that's what you want. It does sustain and push the reader on but only if approached in the right way.
Above all this is a gentle and beguiling reflection on the emotional struggles of life for those who are introspective, sharply analytical and deep-thinking. Like the subject itself it gives no answers, no conclusions and remains open-ended - just as it should to be true to its subject matter.
Readers of that disposition should find this a satisfying journey, giving voice to this type if person?s restless absorption with meaning and value. Mercier hangs these themes like prisoners within the banality of human choices made and choices squandered or rejected.
There is a great charm in the novel despite its brutally honest depiction of human fallibility and life?s futility, and it somehow manages to reaffirm rather than depress. A great book if that?s what you want!
Too slow and introspective for me
This book is about an introspective, selfish geeky character that rambles through the latter part of his life. I found it depressing and dull, so I gave up well before the end, something I rarely do with an audiobook.

It's Really Not That Great, but Check It Out...
Schmitt does it again: how he writes novels about such completely different themes, with such perfection, each time - I just don't know. I've never seen him interviewed, but he's so good, I feel like he couldn't possibly be likeable: I mean, he'd be fully justified in being unbearably full of himself (he's really that good).
My first book by Schmitt was La Part de L'Autre, since then I've devoured anything else I can get my hands on: but when I buy the audio version, I save it to listen to with my girlfriend because it's something special for us to share. The story is solid: an incredible mix of well-developed characters that play out a story that is itself a social commentary on our world, explored through the theme of borders. Sounds dry & painful, right? Not in the least.
Brilliant & enjoyable: a definite re-listen for me. I hope that you enjoy it if you listen.
Ah!! I've just committed the sin of enthusiasm: normally when I enjoy something I try to hold back on the enthusiasm "check it out, it's not a waste of time" because enthusiasm builds expectations & then you can be let down. So let me say instead: I love this work and you might not, but I think it's ok enough to give it a shot (you know, with low expectations).
N.B. the book is in French :)

  • The Naked Husband Audiobook by Mark D'arbanville

    Title: The Naked Husband
    Author: Mark D'arbanville
    Narrator: Humphrey Bower
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 52 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-31-08
    Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 9 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
By all accounts, Mark D'Arbanville has the "perfect life" - a successful writer, he is happily married with a teenage son. But when he falls in love with another woman, Mark's life unravels, exposing regret, estrangement, and heartache. Yet, as his marriage falls apart, Mark still can't let go. Nor can his lover, Anna, who won't leave her husband.
When Mark finally does make the break, the effect is catastrophic - his wife commits suicide. The circuit breaker comes when Mark finds his dead wife's journals, and in their pages discovers a man - himself - he can barely recognize. He is forced to take stock of who he is and how men and women live their lives.
In response to The Bride Stripped Bare, The Naked Husband takes a candid look at the way men think, act, and feel inside a relationship. Shocking, disturbing, but impossible to put down, it's a novel for every woman who ever found the reality of sex and marriage so different to the fairytale, and wondered why.
    Editorial Reviews:
Mark D'arbenville lays bare the male psyche in this candid story that draws heavily on his own experiences with marriage, infidelity, love, and loss. Without resorting to moral judgment or platitudes, the storybook version of marriage is stripped apart when the protagonist's perfect life and marriage is disrupted by a love affair. Humphrey Bower performs the story earnestly, allowing this rare glimpse into the real, fragile perspective of a hurting man to flourish. When the affair is discovered - with tragic results - the story turns into a rare exploration of what is too often an inaccessible thing: a husband's identity and vulnerability and the pain we can cause ourselves and those who love us.
    Members Reviews:
    intriguing story
It's very rare when a man talks about his life in frank words, particularly when his actions have such an impact. I did not know before reading that the story is partly autobiographical so I was truly fascinated by the male perspective of a love affair and life as a man and father in general. Despite - or because of - its unsettling developments it is an absorbing book. I very much enjoyed listening to it. The narration is well done!
    endless agony
started out on a negative note and continued. Seemed to be read in black and white with no colors.

Enjoyable - makes me want to visit Amalfi coast!
This was a fun, breezy listen - very enjoyable. I like how Adler describes places - the sights, sounds and and smells help you really envision it. And her characters are very believable. Romance and mystery team up to provide a good listening experience. I'll definitely try other audios by her and MacDuffie.

Trinity grew up as Trinity Henderson, adopted by the Windsor foreman and his wife. Trinity was conceived not out of love, but out of Sarabess's desperate attempt to prolong Emily's life by providing a bone marrow donor. On her 15th birthday, Trinity ran away and hasn't been seen in Crestwood since. But the town has never forgotten her...especially not handsome lawyer Jake Forrest. And although Jake has no desire to help selfish Sarabess Windsor, the thought of seeing his childhood friend again fills a void in his heart that Jake didn't even know existed.
Trinity swore never to return to Crestwood. Not for the mother who callously abandoned her, not for the late father she hardly knew, not for the huge family trust she stands to inherit. But some ties - to a place, to a past, to the people we once were and dreams we once had - can never be fully broken. And as family secrets are revealed, and desires old and new come to light, Trinity may discover the one thing she never expected to find in Crestwood: a place to call home at last.

    A great mystery
You will love the mystery and you will be surprised. Even if you are not a Christian you will enjoy seeing how these characters express their faith as they face overwhelming trials.
    Good author
I'd like to read more by this author. I never want to hear this narrator again.
Bad Narration makes this book bad
I had a hard time getting into this book mainly because of the narrator.
In parts the narrator would rush through the book; in other parts he would speak in a monatone voice. Which made this book for me hard to listen to.
I'm not sure if the book it was good itself because I just couldn't finish it.
    Cliché Christian Book
I will start off saying that this book is very well written and had no problem with any grammar and the story flowed well.
That being said, this story is a cliché example of modern christian literature. The characters are very 2-dimensional with no depth to there personalities. The story itself was incredibly predictable. You can tell from the first few chapters what relationships are going to form, who the bad guys are, and even how they pulled it off. To compensate, the author throws in wild and unrealistic plot twists that pushes the story that much farther into the realm of unreality.

    Critic Reviews:
"Gaiman's silver-tongued narration vividly brings this production to life. Like the bards of old, Gaiman is equally proficient at telling tales as he is at writing them, and his pleasant British accent feels like a perfect match to the material." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Delicious
The book is a much more nuanced tale than the movie, but equally delightful and beautifully read.
    Brilliant Listen BUT
    Any additional comments?
I always enjoy Neil Gaiman and was happy to find one of his 'children's books for my daughter. Two sex scenes and the f word later and I think we can definitely say. While a fantastic fairy story it's not one for your eight your old to go to bed with. I have called Audible about their categorisation of this title.
    A proper fairy story
One of my favourite books, expertly read by one of my favourite authors. Stardust is one of my comfort blanket reads when I'm feeling a bit down. A proper old-fashioned fairy tale in that it deals with sex and death - if you've read the original Grimm's fairy tales then you will know that this is completely traditional and like all fairy tales it's actually about growing up and finding out who you really are. Unlike traditional fairy tales it's also funny and quirky and full of references to other stories. Also one small, entirely, justified bit of swearing if that sort of thing bothers you.
Stardust - a pleasure from beginning to end!
This is a complete pleasure! Neil Gaiman reads his own work beautifully, he has a particularly nice voice, and adds a nuance that is often lacking in audiobook narration. If you saw the film and liked it, then this fills in all the gaps. The ending is different to the film (and all the better for it). I even went out and bought a copy of the book!
So now I want to get more Neil Gaiman stuff, and sadly Audible don't have that much. Requests please for Coraline and Neverwhere....
Oh Neil, read my shopping list!
Neil Gaiman, reading his own work. Wonderful. I quickly fell in love with him as the narrator, I believe he could read my shopping list and it would take on subtle new tones of mystery, menace and magic. Such a pity more of his work isnt available, read by him.
A lovely, light fairytale for grown ups and superior to the film. Thank you Mr Gaiman
