Publisher's Summary:
Lonely Iris Courtney learns about life in the small town of Hammond, New York, where blacks and whites live separate lives. She learns of love from her parents - hard-drinking, hard-living Duke Courtney and his stormy marriage with the lovely but troubled Persia Courtney. But Iris learns most from Verlyn "Jinx" Fairchild, star of the basketball courts, his hopes for a way out of Hammond pinned to a college scholarship. Their lives are shattered one terrifying night when Jinx defends Iris against "Little Red" Garlock, the vicious hillbilly who hates both blacks and whites alike. And forever after, Jinx and Iris are locked in a bond of violence, shame and secrecy.

A powerful book
An important book on how youthful decisions can forever effect our life.
Brazen and contemplative--Oates at her best
Even in the realm of Oates--one of our most fearless authors today--this is a brave and brash examination of race and sex. I loved this book because it is an unblinking look at a span of life and all the variables: sex, class, family, morality. If you've never read Oates, this is a great place to start, and if you are already a fan, this is a must-read.
One of Oates' best, from a teacher who taught it to absolutely riveted students. You won't regret reading this one
One of the best novels I've ever read, or taught. High school kids could not put it down; they even brought it into gym class to keep reading. Powerful, racist story line that twists the soul, and leaves you wanting things to be better, which they rarely are in real life. Oates' eloquent writing is above and beyond in this novel. Her sentences soar and then pull you back down to earth, where you will find yourself crying, and at its end, you may wish for another page...to turn.
We named our dog Jinx, after Oates' character. Yes, we did :)
Exceptional Writing and Characters
I read this because it is often listed as one of the best crime novels ever written and I persevered through it for the same reason. It's slow going to be honest, but the writing is lovely and the characters are fascinating. Also the era and window into life in a small upstate New York city during the Civil Rights movement. Some of the characters are so tragic. It was worth pushing through, but what sticks with me most is the writing and the characters, not the plot or the ending or any unusual twists, which are usually strong is crime novels.
Like All of Oates' Books, This One is Incredibly Haunting
This is an incredibly haunting book. It examines the complex
interactions and experiences that go into creating our core
selves.
Iris Courtney grows up in an emotionally impoverished and al-
coholic home where chaos looms in the wake of her mother's
drinking. Iris yearns for love and touch but her mother's
distance causes irrevocable pain, dissociation, and fuge-like
states that become Iris's primary coping skills.
Eary in the book, Iris becomes fatefully tied to a young black
man who innocently kills a boy who has been tormenting Iris.
Their lives become forever connected as they maintain the se-
cret of the killing forever.
