    Publisher's Summary:
As Trafford Sewell struggles to work through the usual crowds of commuters, he is confronted by the intimidating figure of his Parish Confessor. Why has Trafford not been streaming his every moment of sexual intimacy onto the community website like everybody else? Does he think he's different or special in some way? Better than his fellow man and woman? Does he have something to hide?
Imagine a world where everyone knows everything about everybody. Where what a person 'feels' and 'truly believes' is protected under the law, while what is rational, even provable is condemned as heresy. A world where to question ignorance and intolerance is to commit a Crime against Faith.
Ben Elton's dark, savagely comic novel imagines a post-apocalyptic society where religious intolerance combines with a confessional sex obsessed, self-centric culture to create a world where nakedness is modesty, ignorance is wisdom and privacy is a dangerous perversion. A chilling vision of what's to come? Or something rather closer to what we call reality?

    Hard to read
Well to be honest the story is a cautionary tale about societies addiction to ones self! So for me this book was hard to read/listen to it has some very crude language and talks about sex in a very demeaning way. I found it very tasteless and provocative. The story could've been great I really thought it the author could've written a better story with some of his ideas. I felt the author sees the absolute worse in people! And that's what I had in the front of my mind the entire time with this book.
    depressingly plausible dystopian future-Britain
Ben Elton has a talent for seeing past the surface of things to the reality lurking beneath. In "Dead Famous" he showed us how little reality there is in Reality TV. In "Chart Throb" he exposed how the outcomes of TV talent shows are manipulated. In "Blind Faith" he shows us where we may get to if current trends in attitudes towards privacy, intellect, and the dominance of passionate opinion over factual analysis continue.
I've found previous Ben Elton books to be fun as well as insightful. He uses wit, humour and careful observation to make me smile at the gaps between the world as it is presented to us and the reality that he uncovers.
"Blind Faith" is not like that. "Blind Faith" is so in your face and so horribly plausible that it make "1984" and "Fahrenheit 451" feel like light-hearted romps. Watching the plot unfold made me feel as if I were rubbernecking on a car wreck: the nice part of me wanted to look away but the reptile wrapped around my hindbrain was fascinated by the reality of the disaster.
"Blind Faith" is set in a post-flood near-future London, where the people are packed together so tightly there is only room to shuffle, not enough to walk. Social media are always on in your living room. Privacy is regarded as the kind of deviant behaviour only pedo pervert would need. Cherry-popping videos are part of everyone's online bio, laws are set by mass vote, a populist, live it large church guides all decisions, reading is illegal and vaccinations are seen as a lack of faith in God.
In the midst of all this, an ordinary man, trying to do his best and being overwhelmed.
This is a memorable book but it is not a comfortable read.

    Publisher's Summary:
When their mother catches their father with another woman, 12-year-old Blessing and her 14-year-old brother, Ezikiel, are forced to leave their comfortable home in Lagos for the village of Warri in the Niger Delta to live with their mothers family. Without running water or electricity, Warri is at first a nightmare for Blessing. Her mother is gone all day and works suspiciously late into the night to pay the childrens school fees. Her brother, once a promising student, seems to be falling increasingly under the influence of a group of violent local teenage boys calling themselves freedom fighters. Her grandfather, a kind if misguided man, is trying on Islam as his new religion of choice and is even considering the possibility of bringing in a second wife.
But Blessings grandmother, wise and practical, soon becomes a beloved mentor, teaching Blessing the ways of the midwife in rural Nigeria. Blessing is exposed to the horrors of genital mutilation and the devastation wrought on the environment by British and American oil companies. As Warri comes to feel like home, Blessing becomes increasingly aware of the threats to its safety, both from its unshakable but dangerous traditions and from the relentless carelessness of the modern world. Tiny Sunbirds, Far Away is the witty and beautifully written story of one familys attempt to survive a new life they could never have imagined, struggling to find a deeper sense of identity along the way.
    Critic Reviews:
An excellent novel. It takes the reader deep into the reality of ordinary life in Nigeria and is also funny, moving, and politically alert. (Giles Foden, award-winning author of The Last King of Scotland)

    gather round, kiddies
so i've been listening to this as i roam around sewing... and i keep hoping it will, so to speak, get a life. but it's not, so i need to hunt down another audiobook.
i deeply dislike books where it's all narrative, where nothing is left to the reader's imagination, and this book is a very clear example of that. we are told exactly what happens, what the significance of things are, and how to feel about it (in an emotionally intense scene, people will be gripping things until they draw blood or laughing, to let you know how you're supposed to feel).
i can never pinpoint what the necessary empty space for the reader should be, and i feel bad about that... it's a negative space, defined only by the things around it. when there's too many things, there's no negative space, and that's the best i can say.
re: the audiobook version. this is where the book goes from just kind of boring to downright annoying. the book's narrator is a 12-year-old girl; the book's reader has apparently conflated "child narrator" with "read as if to a group of children at storytime." you know that voice: "my EYES were as biiiiiig as PUMPkins!!!!!!" like that. big, big mistake.
urk. can't take any more. good thing Audible allows returns.

    Satus, Caste and Beauty
Her parents DO love her but poor bespectled short Rakhee Singh is lonely! All her blue eyed blond school mates exclude her from play. Her brilliant father, a physician, is so involved with his work that he barely has time for her. Her clinically depressed mother just doesn't have the capacity to care for her daughter except in a very peripheral way.
A trip from MN to her parents' native southern India the summer she is 10, turning 11, introduces her to at least a few cousins she can bond with.
She experiences a whole new world completely different from her home in Minnesota. And she stumbles upon a 'skeleton in the closet' of her family, a secret not meant to be discovered. Rather than ignore this mysterious situation, she gets in and faces the unknown and uncovers something scarey and shameful, yet fulfilling to Rakhee in some way.
You'll find many insights into Indian life, culture, music, myths, attitudes toward females, clothing, marriage customs, food, flora, fauna, snakes and especially superstitions beliefs. Rakhee becomes overwhelmed with the feeling that her mother may not want to return to America. She believes that her mom loves another man, someone her mom has known all her life.
Watch how status, caste, economic privilege and physical beauty play their part in the family dynamic.
Even if this book is a fiction, it could easily have been real.
See how this one summer's experiences detrimentally affects the next decade of her like as she tries to form a relationship with a young man who wants to marry her. It will take another trip to India to soothe her soul.
Whatever You Do...Stay Out of the Jungle
An entertaining book that transports the listener to India through the eyes of Rakhee Singh (pronounced Rocky) as she recalls a pivotal trip in her youth to her parents homeland; a journey that has many parallels to The Secret Garden. Outwardly, it is obvious to the reader that there are problems with her parents marriage -- a gentle father that puts in too many hours at his medical job, and a nervous, depressed mother that suffers silently. In India, Rakhee finds a different life with cousins, aunts, uncles, that live in the same home, and a land very different from Minnesota, USA -- and a walled garden in a jungle she has been forbidden from (the usual "beware of snakes and tigers" scare tactic), but of course, Rakhee is adventurous.
This trip becomes both an outer and inner journey as Rakhee scales the wall and finds the "horrid" secret. You know what happens when deep dark generational secrets get out of the closet; a chain of dark sad events are set in motion.
The description is lovely, mostly about the vegetation, food, and daily activites, but I didn't feel as immersed in the foreign country as I have with some other reads about India, most likely because it is all described by a ten yr.

Bit by bit, Darby discovers that loss can build new life - and love truly can conquer anything.
    Critic Reviews:
"Fern Michaels's characters are real and endearing, her prose so natural that it seems you are witnessing the story rather than reading about it." (Los Angeles Times)
    Members Reviews:
    Enjoyable
A bit hokey - the storyline is built around tragic events but the story itself tends to be "soupy." An idyllic setting, idyllic gardens and homes and garden clubs followed by an idyllic romance - modern life superimposed on an antebellum southern lifestyle. Strange. But entertaining nonetheless - three southern ladies whose antics will tickle you and make it worth the read.
    Higher Expectations
Comparable to having a ravishing appetite and being fed a grape. Disappointing at best. Not what I was expecting.

    Members Reviews:
    A Jen Lancaster disappointment
I'm a Jen Lancaster fan and I have to say, this book is most unlike her. It's a boring tale of home improvements. It's like listening to a narration of a hundred episodes off HGTV. I'm about 6 hours into it and I've found myself turning it off several times because it was just too difficult to listen to. Actually, that would be an understatement. I have turned it off because it was downright annoying. I've yet to discover the storyline or a plot. If you like to listen about home redecorating and home remodel ad nauseum, this is your book. Otherwise, save your money and your sanity and just find another book :(
How is this different from her memoirs?
I really love Jen Lancaster's funny, acerbic memoirs and I was so hoping that her first foray into fiction was going to be just as great. But it reads exactly like one of her memoirs, even down to the footnotes. Let's be real - Mia is Jen, Mac is Fletch, Daisy is Maisy, and her best friend Tracey is Stacey. Even the narrator is exactly the same and sounds just like she does when reading "Bitter is the New Black". I wish Jen had tried to write this in another style. It works really well for memoirs but doesn't translate as well to fiction. Like everything else she's written, it was punchy, fast-paced, and very funny. But I still can't help feeling disappointed.
If You Love Jen Lancaster You Will Love Mia!
What did you like best about this story?
I love Jen Lancaster's other books (all nonfiction) her first trip into the fiction genre is awesome! Fiction gave her freedom to fully submit herself and you to the fantasy of your dream house while allowing for bumps and turns in the road to keep you tuned in. While listing to this my boyfriend was happy because i was so into it that he got to play video games because i could not take the ear buds out lol! I hoped you found this helpful and enjoy your listening :D
Great listen, perfect for road trip
I was looking for a book that my mother and I could listen to on a road trip. Although we both enjoy audiobooks, we like very different genres. I read the description and thought it sounded like something we both might like. I was right.
The narration is good, she doesn't change her voice too much, especially between the women, but it really didn't both either of us. Most of all, we both laughed out lou several times, it is very funny.

    90% heaven, 10% hell.
I had never heard of either this author or the narrator. I bought the book in the $5 sale, so my expectations were low. The book blew me away. Most of it is so well written that it is a shame that the ending sucks so badly. This is the story of Paul and Callie, and other people (and un-people) who work at TEXDOGS, the Texas Department of Governmental Services. There is plenty of fun to be had throughout the book, and the love story between Callie and Paul is incredibly sweet and tender. There are also a couple of really great sex scenes. The story descends into science fiction, which only bothered me a little until the end. There is waaaay too much hell at the end. I know, it is often very hard for a great book to have a great ending, but still. What you want is for these two lovers to walk hand in hand off into the Texas sunset. What happens, though, is what seems like days of the underworld and its nefarious doings. I must admit that I am not a fan of science fiction: it seems to me a genre in which authors can make up their own rules, which makes the books flabby and utterly impossible. If anything goes, then you can make up absolutely anything, and it has to be OK. Personal preference. In any case, you can get hours of wonderful pleasure from the book. The author can write like mad, and the narrator is fantastic.
    Strange
Would you try another book from James Hynes and/or Adam Grupper?
Maybe, the narration was good, the writing wood but story...strange. I don't knw what I really expected but it wasn't this.
Would you recommend Kings of Infinite Space to your friends? Why or why not?
Uhm, maybe to my weird friends.
What about Adam Gruppers performance did you like?
Good, he kept in character well letting the listener transition between characters well.
Do you think Kings of Infinite Space needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
    Not really. Wouldn't interest me.
    Any additional comments?
I bought this book along with ninteen others during Audibles $5 sale. I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this particular one. Others I bought during the sale have been great and a real bargin. It all equals out I guess.
Office Space Meets Shaun of the Dead
What did you love best about Kings of Infinite Space?
The description of the daily grind of the office was great, the petty rivalries, different personality types, ridiculous policies, and so on.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
The last part of the book was my least favorite as it is no longer satire but just wild .
