    Any additional comments?
At first I hated the main character of this book and had a hard time listening. Then I realized there was a sort of self-depracating humor about the character that becomes more apparent as the book progresses, that the whole story is making fun of what a Yoga Teacher typically represents -- a lot of contradictions at the very least. Fun to have a male protagonist who is somewhat exploited. In the end, it was an enjoyable, funny, and somewhat illuminating book.
    An auditory page-turner... or chapter-turner?
I seldom listen to fiction. This one caught my attention and I'm glad it did. It's one of those books you can't put down.
    It's funny too:)
Consummate bad boy turns guru or tries!
What made the experience of listening to Downward Dog the most enjoyable?
I really enjoyed this book which surprised me. I thought it was going to be lame but it wasn't. I loved that the main character was a guy.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Downward Dog?
He just kept blowing up his life and seemed to have a hard time learning from his mistakes. But he kept trying.
Which character as performed by J. Paul Guimont was your favorite?
    The main character
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The constant bad choices that keep leading down the same path.
    Any additional comments?
    Surprisingly enjoyable

    Four Stars
A very creepy story with interesting characters. I plan to read the sequel soon.
    An outstanding writer!
Ms. Mantel's writing draws you in and keeps you fascinated throughout the novel. Her observations resonate with our own experiences and we can really identify and empathize with the characters. Impossible to put this book down, once started.
Dark and well written, this book shows the author's willingness to share the irony of the maternal spirit...
The book is honest and cynical. The cold look at grandmothers and the burden of care has some funny moments.
    Love her
Nobody is spared here. I loved the characters. It's not exactly uplifting, but it is comical if you appreciate black humor.
    Second weirdest book ever
I read a lot of books. This was the second Hilary Mantel book I read. It was only second in weirdness to the first book of hers that I read. It really stayed with me after reading. But it was sooooo strange. I would recommend it to any serious reader. It certainly isn't fluff or just light entertainment.

    Just painful
What did you like best about The Rise of the Hotel Dumort? What did you like least?
Well I can say what I liked the least was the narrator. Stephen Lunsford was just not Magnus for me. He was very flat.
Has The Rise of the Hotel Dumort turned you off from other books in this genre?
    No
How could the performance have been better?
Put a little life into it. He was so flat and boring.
    ;-/
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
if the chronicles had been put in one book
What could Cassandra Clare and Maureen Johnson have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
make sure there was more details about the characters in play
    Which scene was your favorite?
    none
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    disappointment
Finally, Bane just the way you like it.
Nice complete story with supporting characters who are whole, a beginning at the start, a tasty middle, and a hero's ending.
Of the Chronicles thus far, this shows Magnus as I know and love him.
    The Vampire Hotel
Great background into the history of the infamous Hotel Dumort. It's a cool part of history, not the made up hotel, but the era in which this takes place.
    the point?
I know the Hotel Dumort is an important location, and I guess this gave a little background to it. But I have finished it wondering what the point was behind it. The telling of the story is good, and I can not condemn the narrator.
Its just that the few tiny bits of information the story revel seem like they could have been reveled in a story that actually had some level of importance and not leave the listener going "i just listened to an hour and half for that?" At least that is how I feel about the book as a whole.
This whole series has been hit or miss, some are good, some are average, some are barely okay, at least so far none have been absolute horrible.

    Publisher's Summary:
Horace Chase arrives on Hilton Head Island to pay his last respects at the Intracoastal Waterway where his late mother's ashes were spread and to inspect the home his mother left him in her will. He's been recently forced into retirement, his divorce is officially final, and now he's standing in the middle of the front yard of his 'new' house where a tree has crashed right through the center of it.
    What could possibly go wrong?
Within six hours of arriving on Hilton Head, Chase is exchanging gunfire with men who've kidnapped a young boy and tried to grab the boy's mother, Sarah Briggs. Soon he's waist deep in an extortion plot to funnel a hundred million dollars of Superbowl, online gambling money into an offshore bank account or else the boy dies.
Dave Riley has long retired from the military and living peacefully on sleepy Dafuskie Island off the coast of South Carolina - sort of. He's actually bored, feeling old, and just a bit cranky running his deceased uncle's small-time bookie operation.
Horace Chase: meet Dave Riley. Riley: Chase.
Meet Erin: Chase's long-ago summer fling, now a veterinarian and not interested in men any more, at least that way. But her suturing skills and her knowledge of the island bring assets the team needs. Especially after Chase's first visit with the Russian requires a bit of the former skills.
Meet Gator: an ex-Ranger, iron-pumping, fire-breathing hulk of a redneck, with a soft spot in his heart for Erin, and steroids burning in his muscles to hurt people. As long as Riley and Chase point him in the right direction, the rest of the populace should be all right.
Meet Kono: a Gullah, descendant of the free slaves who fled to the barrier islands in the 19th century and developed their own culture. He nurses his own pain and secrets, but heeds Chase's call to renew their childhood friendship. Especially when he learns the target is the Russians.
It adds up to a fiery confrontation to rescue the young boy, and settle some old scores.
But Riley and Chase need to remember a basic tenet from their days in covert operations: Nothing is ever as it appears.

    Unexpected twists
There was one continuity issue concerning Dave Reilly but to see him back in action was great. Easily the best of the series and with that cliffhanger ending I can't wait to read the next.

Title: A Place at the Table

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 1 min
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-04-13
    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 111 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Celebrating the healing power of food and the magic of New York City, A Place at the Table follows the lives of three seekers who come together in the understanding that when you embrace the thing that makes you different, you become whole. A Place at the Table tells the story of three unforgettable characters whose paths converge in a storied Manhattan café: Bobby, a young gay man from Georgia who has been ostracized by his family; Amelia, a wealthy Connecticut woman whose life is upended when a family secret comes to light; and Alice, an African-American chef from North Carolina whose heritage is the basis of a renowned cookbook but whose past is a mystery to those who know her. These characters are exiles - from homeland, from marriage, from family. While they all find companionship and careers through cooking, they hunger for the deeper nourishment of communion. As the narrative sweeps from a freed-slave settlement in 1920s North Carolina to Manhattan during the deadly AIDS epidemic of the 1980s to the well-heeled hamlet of contemporary Old Greenwich, Connecticut, Bobby, Amelia, and Alice are asked to sacrifice everything they ever knew or cared about to find authenticity and fulfillment.
Susan Rebecca Whites first two novels were hailed for the beauty of her writing, her wit, her compassion for her characters, and her sharp insights into their inner lives. A Place at the Table announces the maturity of her talents and reveals her wise and open heart.
    Members Reviews:
    Simply disappointing.
Would you try another book from Susan Rebecca White and/or the narrators?
Unlikely, except for the narrator George Newbern, he did a good job.
What was most disappointing about Susan Rebecca Whites story?
I immediately thought I would return the book because I didn't like how it started, but when it switched to the story about Bobby I was glad I didn't because that was fun and interesting (plus that narrator was good). But when the story switched again to Amelia, I totally didn't get it and that narrator was terrible.
What character would you cut from A Place at the Table?
Amelia. I don't think the storyline needed it.
This is a beautifully crafted book. Just lovely.
I was expecting this book to be okay based on the rating, but I really did not expect it to be wonderful - and that's what it is. I'm not sure I've ever seen an author handle BIG topics - race, bigotry, religion, death - with such compassion and grace. I immediately listened to it again just to see how she had done it.
Had this not been a book club book, I'm not sure I would have listened to it. In comparison to the other books I listen to and read, it looked too gentle. In reality, it's more like an iron hand in a velvet glove. This is an author who can handle tough stuff without being crude or harsh. And she surprised me when I least expected it.
If you're stumped for a book club selection, this one is terrific. There's lots to talk about and think about.
    RUN!! To Order This Book
    You will not be disappointed.
This wonderfully written book is about the search for that place at a table where you feel most welcomed. It's a beautifully detailed account of the lives of a group of people that have ties to the south and New York City. It brings them together. I don't have ties to either, but felt right at home in this book.

    Actually an interesting story
Where does Kramer vs. Kramer rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    Above average
Who was your favorite character and why?
The father figure. I like how he was taking care of his child by himself, and at the same time overcame the hardship from being laid off twice.
Have you listened to any of Peter Berkrots other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When he was packing the stuff for his kid...
    Any additional comments?
Have seen posters about fathers' rights before, and it really sucks that mothers always get the kids regardless how the fathers love and care about their kids. Fathers' rights should be protected, too. Or else what's the point for guys to get married?
