Book summary: Great picture book for teaching the facts behind the Star-Spangled Banner.
Great quote:
"O Say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
WHAT?
As the sun set last night, the sight of the flag flying over the fort filled us with pride. Now, as the morning sun begins to rise over the horizon, is the flag still there? Tell me, can you still see it?
(The date was September 14, 1814. The night before, Americans had fought the British in the Battle of Baltimore.)
(Francis Scott Key asked the question to the two other Americans in the boat with him.)"
~ Pages 8 and 9
My thoughts: Love this great book that explains the well-known, but sometimes cryptic, words of the Star-Spangled Banner! This book explains all of the important questions such as the who, where, why and how that went into composing this famous song. You may think you know the Star-Spangled Banner, but do you know the story behind the tune? This book is fun, entertaining and very educational. This book is short (32 pages) and geared towards late elementary aged kids, but trust me, I was learning these facts right along with the kids.
