    A very brief overview
I realized about 45 minutes into this audio that I was not it's target audience. While I know this audio is only three hours long, it didn't do it's subject justice. The interview with Loren Coleman was interesting, but very brief. If you are like me and have been reading books and watching shows on this subject for years, then this book will not offer anything new. Kids who are new to the subject may find it interesting to hear about cryptids that they may not have known about. Others will find this offering to be way too brief to be interesting.

Interspersed throughout are comedic episodes, as an unsuspecting tourist tries to get information from the "locals".
A delightful preface about living in New Hampshire for the past 35 years and visiting the North Country since he was a boy, explains why Tomie DePaola has perfect pitch for the dialect and a genuine appreciation for these unforgettable characters and their understated humor. These tales are sure to be a hit with Tomie's fans, young and old.

Fun for readers who understand New England humor.
Unlike the well-known author of these rib-tickling, laugh-aloud whoppers, I became a "local" when I married into a Maine family in 1961. I had taught one foreign language before moving to Maine to marry my farmer. Once we'd exchanged vows, it appeared I had another foreign language to learn. I succeeded in due time to be able to translate in my head what was being said to me and I learned to appreciate New England humor.
The book caught my eye when I saw it at our local library. To get the full effect of the language I read the tales aloud. What fun! These whoppers sounded so authentic to me that I purchased a copy of the book for my 92-year-old, Maine-born brother-in-law, knowing he will love them.
But I am not sure at what reading level children will be able to appreciate them. The stories would work well if an adult read them to the children so they could explain what the youngsters did not understand. Readers who have trouble understanding the new vocabulary words will appreciate the glossary.

    Tomie de Paola
This book is another in a long line of excellent books for young children. Tomie de Paola is an excellent writer and illustrator. His books appeal to children and help them learn to read on their own using vivid illustrations and simple wording that create a desire for more.
Tomie dePaola's Front Porch Tales and North Country Whoppers
I lived in New Hampshire earlier in my life and Tomie's book is so accurate and the best laugh I've had in a long, long time!

    is this legal?
This company sold me an advanced reader copy of Hot Lunch. I don't think that's legal. I'll leave it up to Amazon to do something. I still have the book. I will not purchase from this company again.
    fun, fast read
I gotta say that this is a fun book. It's about two girls who get into a big food fight at school and as punishment are put in charge of the school's kitchen. But: they don't know how to took or get along. Thus hilarity ensues. The book reads fast, the characters seem like real people, and there's a laught on almost every page. The author's book 24 Girls in 7 Days is great fun, too.
    Delectable!
Molly's and Cassie's antics in the school kitchen are funny and clever. The plot zips along, you meet quirky and heartwarming characters, and get some fun recipes too!

Save Queen of Sheba is a great book for 5th grade. Wonderful story of children who survive alone after an Indian attack while their family are traveling by wagon train. A must read!

Great book for readers young and old. Not much else like it on the market for young readers today.
Stories for Children Magazine 4 Star Review
    REVIEWED BY: Wayne Walker
The family of a twelve-year-old boy named King David and his six year old sister named Queen of Sheba, have have left St. Louis, MO, and begun travelling west on a wagon train to make a new life in Oregon. The two children get separated from their parents and are in an advance company which is attacked by Sioux raiders. King David awakens to see that everyone else has been killed, although he locates no sign of his parents' wagon, which was in the company behind, so they must have escaped. He has a severe head wound. An Indian evidently started to scalp him but perhaps was frightened away. Well, one other person did survive. King David finds his sister hidden beneath an overturned feather bed. They locate one of the horses and begin to track the other wagons' trail to find their Pa and Ma. King David knows that Pa would depend on him to save Queen of Sheba, who is whiny and disobedient. But out alone on the wild prairie, with little food and water, and Indians prowling around, can they make it to safety?
Good historical fiction is my favorite kind of children's literature. This one has its moments of suspense and excitement, although there are places where it might be a little too action-less for a lot of nine- to twelve-year-olds. Younger children and sensitive readers may find the description of the assault's aftermath in chapters one and two a little disturbing. Also, parents who are concerned with language may want to note that the word "Lord" is used as an interjection throughout the book, and that King David does use the "d" and the "h" words one time each. Personally, I cannot understand why authors who write for children feel the need to use such language. Otherwise, this is an interesting story that will help young people to understand the dangers that settlers faced during the period of westward expansion.
How I felt this book was writen
I think that this book was upfront in the begining. You knew what was going to happen for the first 56 pages. That part amde me less interested in the book. But towards the end it became more interesting. You didn't know what was going to happen as much you did in the begging and it was very unpredictable. I enjoyed reading the book as it got to the end. I would probably recomend this book to readers but give them the advice. Don't quit in the begging it gets much better as you go on towards the end.

    Editorial Reviews:
A compelling, sensationalistic tale seemingly ripped straight out of the tabloids, Emily Blake's bold and provocative Playing With Fire, the first installment of her Little Secrets series, follows the privileged teen Alison as she free-falls down the social ladder after her mother is arrested by the FBI for embezzlement.
Kristen Kairos' emotionally charged, stinging performance captures the venom of the many who betray Allison in this addictive listen rife with family melodrama, duplicitous boyfriends, and countless twists and turns. Think Mean Girls crossed with an afternoon soap opera.

We enjoyed this book immensely! I read it with my preteen grandson. The characters were rich. The storyline believable and full of emotion. We liked how it was told from the point of view of two different characters. I would highly recommend it!
    Courtesy of Teens Read Too
Krista and Daniel were inseparable from the first day of kindergarten on. Swimming lessons, play dates, they did everything together. Until Valentine's Day in third grade. Krista got a box of chocolates and an unsigned love note. There's no way of knowing for sure who it came from, but Krista is convinced it was Bobby. It almost doesn't really even matter anymore because since that day, Krista has had the crush of her life on Bobby. Two-and-a-half years, and it hasn't gone away, and she's no closer to dating him than she was at the beginning. She should have asked Daniel about it back then, when should have equaled could have, when they were still best friends. But around the beginning of fourth grade it somehow became not cool to be best friends with someone of the opposite sex. So Krista found Sandy and Gina, and Daniel became best friends with Bobby. Krista still has the box and the note, though!
The day after the end of fifth grade changes everything for Daniel, and eventually for Krista, too. Daniel goes to have dental work done, and a freak accident happens. Now he'll need a lot of physical therapy to even get back to being functional. Who knows if he'll ever be able to be a competitive swimmer again? To make matters worse, his dentist was Bobby's dad. Which causes all sorts of problems. Add in his mom's inability to deal with the whole thing, and Daniel's not sure what his future looks like. It's a pretty tough thing to contemplate when you're only in sixth grade.
Krista vows to help her once best friend. But intending to and wanting to help are easier things to say than do. Does helping Daniel mean she's picking him over Bobby? What does helping, or not helping, say about her as a person? Why is it so hard to be around Daniel? How can she talk to him?
This story is a snapshot of a time in life that's hard enough without major obstacles. Figuring out how to relate to the opposite sex is a constant battle that starts around third grade and for some people it doesn't end for the next twenty years! It's made even harder because previous to that it was completely normal to be friends with the people that you don't even know how to talk to now. I still don't know exactly what it is that changes everything. With the accident as an obstacle, it also becomes a story about defining yourself at any age. A person's actions and reactions say a lot about who they are, but they can also easily be misinterpreted.
This book deals with a confusing time in life, but it does so very openly and honestly. It could very easily have gotten depressing, or melodramatic, or lost in a message. Thankfully it never does. Instead you walk away from it feeling like you got a glimpse into life from a full perspective.
