Thriller set in AMSTERDAM and ALKMAAR

This is the first book in a series featuring Amsterdam detective Lotte Meerman. Lotte is a severely damaged, but utterly believable, young woman. She works for the Cold Case squad of Amsterdam police. She has recently solved the 15 year old mystery of the murder of an 8 year old girl. But the investigation, and her unprofessional personal involvement in the course it, have left her in pieces. She let her private needs and feelings impinge on her police duties. She finds it hard to sleepâ

Driving around one night (when she canât sleep), she witnesses a botched hold up at a filling station. She shoots and wounds the perpetrator in self defence. As a police officer this is not an issue, except that it preys on her mind â the perpetrator was young and vulnerable.

In the course of interviewing the young man, she is given information which may be relevant to the Cold Case enquiry into a 10-year old murder of a recently released from prison financier. Any leads had long since gone dead. Amsterdam police had requested the passing over of various files from Alkmaar police so they could investigate further, but these had mysteriously disappeared. Lotte is involved on the case and her father, Piet Huizen (also a policeman) had been the investigating Alkmaar detective at the time. She, for various reasons, suspects her father of being part of a cover up â and she believes she has found a reason for his behaviour. She should, of course, reveal her potential clash of interests to her superiors, but she does not. As the net begins to tighten around her âomissionâ, she has no choice but to try and find the murderer before she is compromised.

There are two key suspects, the two partners of the murdered financier. Both have much to gain from his disappearance (one was in fact having an affair with his wife â whom he subsequently married). But the investigation 10 years previously has not been able to tie either of them to the murder â largely because of the missing files.

The book moves through Amsterdam and Alkmaar to a chilling conclusion. Chilling as in frightening and chilling as in cold. The book is set in the depths of winter, with snow on the ground and temperatures down to -10C. In TripFiction terms it is quite brilliant in its descriptions of both cities.

Well-crafted.

Traffic cops often have a bad day. Think about for a minute: while they are out there protecting us from bad drivers, whoever they pull over isnât likely to be someone pleased to see them.

So take pity on Don, a motorcycle officer who is just doing his job when he pulls over someone he sees as driving very badly. Except thereâs a reason for the bad driving. An urgent one. Like end-of-the-world urgent.

Richard G. Lowe Jnr has crafted an exciting and quick-moving tale about what has to be the worst day in a patrolmanâs lifeâor anyone elseâs for that matter.

I admire Loweâs simply-crafted words. He doesnât bother us with long descriptions or great detail about motivations. He just gets on with telling the story, a style which matches the urgency of his narrative perfectly.

I found myself caught up the story and desperately hoping things werenât as bad as the author paintsânot because I necessarily wanted a happy ending for the characters but because the implications were just too ghastly. This is a scenario that might actually happen, which removes it from the usual thriller style of story.

I asked for something different and Richard G. Lowe delivered. I remain a happy and wiser reader. And a terrified one.

Dark Highways

This was a quick but enjoyable read. Kind of a classic noir tale, one where the protagonist has previously been anything but a hero but now finds himself in a situation where his courage could save millions. Well done.

Could hardly put it down.

If you're looking for an immediate "you're kidding me.... now what...." kind of suspense, you've come to the right place. This books starts out with non-stop drama from chapter one and it just goes on from there. The characters are well developed and the immediacy of action starts from the time you start reading.

If you're looking for something that will draw you in from the beginning and keep you there, this is it. (I received an advance copy; this is my honest review.)

Read from beginning to end in one sitting! Fantastic book!. This books starts out with action the minute you pick it up and start reading! Well written Richard! Looking forward to reading others you've written!

Unlikable Protagonist

A very unlikable protagonist who blames others for consequences to his own actions and behaviors. According to this character all his failures in life are the fault of his enemies.

Although there were interesting historical parts to the book, I was not that impressed by the whining first person narrative given by the story's main character.

The narration itself was well done though.
