Members Reviews:
Tess Monaghan Muted
Laura Lippman is one of my favorite writers. Tess Monaghan is an independent, feisty detective who solves crimes with an interesting blend of logic and intuition. Tess is edgy and challenging. Those traits are a part of all of her relationships. "Hush Hush" could have been renamed "Tess Muzzled." Tess is doing some work for her friend Tyner Gray. He is the attorney for Melisandre Harris Dawes, a former lover, who left her two-month old daughter in a blazingly hot car. Melisandre was tried for her daughter's murder but was found not guilty by reason of insanity. After living in England for 10 years, Melisandre has returned to the United States hoping to re-connect with her two older daughters. She has hired a woman to film a documentary detailing the facts from her infant daughter's death and interviewing key characters to confirm their testimony. The documentary raises more questions than it answers. Tyner has asked Tess to conduct a security analysis when Melisandre starts to receive threatening notes. Tess reluctantly takes the job because she and Crow need the money (she is now mother to a precocious three-year-old. Her ex-husband decides to curtail her visits with her daughters once he learns that Melisandre has been threatened and he dies shortly after meeting with her. Melisandre's two daughters are troubled by their mother's return and this creates dissension between the two of them. There's a lot going on in this book. Even though I didn't like it as much as other books in the series, the plot was interesting. Tess seemed tired to me and Lippman communicates that weariness that comes with juggling work and parental responsibilities. The documentary transcripts were a well-thought-out addition to the story. "Hush Hush" never really came alive for me. Tess seemed disconnected and the absence of Crow's quirky presence (until near the end of the book) really detracted from the sharp characterizations that I have come to expect from Laura Lippman. "Hush Hush" was entertaining but forgettable.
THE PAST RESURFACES
Twelve years ago, a young mother named Melisandre Dawes locked her infant daughter in the car on a hot day. The baby's death led to charges, but after a mistrial and then a retrial with a judge, the mother was found not guilty by reason of insanity.
After years of not seeing her older two daughters, Alanna and Ruby, now 17 and 15, Melisandre is seeking a reunion, facilitated by a filmed documentary that will capture the moment, along with her version of the story.
