This is Part 1 of a three part series with Bob Boring. Bob has the greatest golf stories about the legends of golf because he was inside the ropes with them. Bob has not only repaired clubs for the greatest he caddied for the best. His stories with and about Gay Brewer, Sam Snead Tom Watson are classic. Here is some background on Bob Boring.
He started his golf club making carrier in 1977. In the early years, Bob was afforded the chance to learn not only the basics in club repair but also the finer points of re-shafting and refinishing wood golf clubs with special emphasis on the Classic MacGregor woods. As a youngster, his father and he became avid collectors of classic golf clubs, which further sparked his interest in all things related to golf.
In the mid 1980’s, Bob started doing the custom club work for the late Masters Champion Gay Brewer, eventually caddying for Gay on the Tour. While working for Gay he was able to meet and work with Lew Gibson, who was the first Clubmaker to travel the Tour on a regular basis doing club repair. Having the opportunity to hang around the best golfers in the world gave Bob great insight on how to fine tune a set of golf clubs and what it takes to really make a golf club perform its best. It is this experience that has brought Bob to his company, Tour Quality Golf.
Bob has completed the Golfsmith Master Craftsman program. He has been recognized as the GCA Kansas Clubmaker of the year for the last five years and the GCA Top Ten Clubmakers of the year worldwide for the last three years.
