Work/life balance is top of mind in my conversation with Nicole. Discovering she was not raised by her biological father sent her running into workaholism and dysfunctional relationships in the advertising world of Chicago. After decades of questioning her "gut" as a woman, she came to terms with her own value and was able to create a container in which she could embrace business ownership, marriage and motherhood. She infuses her own honesty and vulnerability with her passion to help women be out in the spotlight.
A certified yoga instructor and native Angeleno, who in 2010 was compelled to no longer be called her birth name Jeff, but identify as Jill and has been on the transgender journey ever since.
The road to her awakening and living in her truth has not been easy. She went from a house, a job and a family to living in her car. She has weathered a common narrative amongst transgender women; family estrangement, addiction, mental health crises, job losses, evictions, housing discrimination, homelessness, suicide attempts, psychiatric hospitalizations, violent crime, sexual assaults and jail.
She shares with us how she found recovery, yoga and advocacy. She cautions that many hard fought recent gains for the transgender community are at risk.
On Episode #1, Kindra Murphy looks at dating as spiritual awakenings, even with what she coins F**K boys, or men who french kiss their dog on the first date. Recovered from long term sexual abuse as a child by a female babysitter, she stands by “hurt people,” and sees how we bring all ranges of trauma into our romantic relationships. If we want to truly be intimate and in love, we need to look within first and ask, what do I want out of my romantic relationships?
How deep do you go on a first date with open communication? Do you try and force chemistry because the person is “nice”?
We dive in deep to the truths behind the baggage we bring to the table, and of course, she talks about what holds her back from writing her book, writing in the car, and seeking to find the book's perfect ending. Kindra references a great book - The Boy Who Was Raised by a Dog (What Traumatized children can teach us about Loss, Love and Healing) by Bruce Perry and Maia Szalavitz.
