For this week’s journal club, Virginia and Frances cover artificial sweeteners. Virginia discusses “Association Between Soft Drink Consumption and Mortality in 10 European Countries” (Mullee et al. 2019). She talks about the connection between artificial sweeteners and risk of death, especially circulatory diseases. Frances talks about “Artificial sweeteners induce glucose intolerance by altering the gut microbiota” (Suez et al. 2014). She relays an important study about how artificial sweetener consumption is mediated by your microbiome.
