In this podcast I’m going to do something different. I’m going to talk about about something personal but it seems relevant during this crazy time.

Back in the 80’s my dad took a chance and went self employed. As a painter decorator. And then came the big recession of the 1980’s. Why pay a painter decorator when you can do it yourself?

It destroyed a potentially brilliant business. It was devastating for him. For us as a family. For his pride. For his mental health.

And I know some of you listening to this may well be staring this same situation in the face.

For an economy that boasts AS many employees as self employed, the current climate and situation will have devastating effects on many, many people.

BUT…I want to give you something to think about…I won’t give you false hope…But I will share with you the 4 lessons I learned from my Dad’s failed business…

Working from home is awesome ...For many modern professionals, working from home every once in a while is a luxury that our respective companies afford us. At the moment it’s more of a necessity… But which environment actually allows us to be more productive: the home office or the office…office?

In the office office, your coworkers often pose the greatest threat to keeping you from getting some real, heads-down work done. They drop by your desk, engage you in conversation, and invite you to lunch. The social benefits of a workplace are definitely nice to have, but they can become a challenge if you're easily distracted.

At the home office, however, I find that it's easy for you to become your own worst enemy. Because when you're not surrounded by coworkers, you're free to drop those pesky inhibitions. At the home office, no one's watching. You don't necessarily feel that same peer pressure or communal obligation to get stuff done. Also: You don't have to wear trousers.

OK...so here’s the the thing...and oddly I’m not allowed to mention the words for what’s happening at the moment on YouTube...otherwise the video gets binned or something...but there are apocalyptic scenes all around the world that can only be likened to the movie, Shaun of the Dead...

Actually...it’s not...people are buying toilet rolls thinking that what’s happening at the moment will give them the shits...ffs. But very definitely, unless you are a toilet roll manufacturer people are losing their heads, shutting themselves down, locking themselves away, throwing away the key and not coming out until it’s all blown over. And that effects business. Of every size.

Whichever way you look at how governments and health officials are handling things, you cant but help feel the strain, pressure and downturn in business. It’s panic at a ridiculous level. But it could leave you slow, bored and wondering how to fill your time instead of watching box set after box set on Netflix.

So here I’m going to give you 7 things you can do whilst you’re waiting for it to ‘blow over’ and get on the front foot again so you can smash your business goals for the rest of the year...providing it doesn’t look like an episode of ‘The Walking Dead’ in a few weeks.
